2 LITURGY GUIDE 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time Welcome to the Cathedral of St. Joseph and thank you for joining us for the celebration of Holy Mass today! Please silence your cell phones and refrain from eating, drinking or chewing gum in the Cathedral. Please help keep our Cathedral tidy by utilizing the waste baskets found near the main entrances. Also, please refrain from taking pictures once Mass has begun. You are welcome to take pictures after Mass has concluded. INTROIT (At 9:15 & 11AM, the Introit is sung by the choir, followed by the opening hymn.) Da pacem, Domine, sustinentibus te, ut prophetae tui fideles inveniantur: exaudi preces servi tui, et plebis tuae Israel. Verse: Laetatus sum in his quae dicta sunt mihi: in domum Domini ibimus! OPENING HYMN CRUCIFER 614 Lift High the Cross PENITENTIAL ACT I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, (striking breast three times) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; Therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. GLORIA Give peace, O Lord, to those who wait for you, that your prophets be found true. Hear the prayers of your servant, and of your people Israel. Verse: I rejoiced when it was said unto me: Let us go to the house of the Lord. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD FIRST READING Isaiah 50:5-9a The Lord God opens my ear that I may hear; and I have not rebelled, have not turned back. I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting. The Lord God is my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame. He is near who upholds my right; if anyone wishes to oppose me, let us appear together. Who disputes my right? Let that man confront me. See, the Lord God is my help; who will prove me wrong? RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 116:1-9 (Refrain sung first by cantor, then congregation repeat) 2 I love the Lord, for he has heard my voice, my appeal; for he has turned his ear to me whenever I call. R. They surrounded me, the snares of death; the anguish of the grave has found me; anguish and sorrow I found. I called on the name of the Lord: Deliver my soul, O Lord! R. How gracious is the Lord, and just; our God has compassion. The Lord protects the simple; I was brought low, and he saved me. R. He has kept my soul from death, my eyes from tears, and my feet from stumbling. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. R. SECOND READING James 2:14-18 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well, but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead. Indeed someone might say, You have faith and I have works. Demonstrate your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.

3 GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (Sung first by cantor, then congregation repeat) Please Stand May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord through which the world has been crucified to me and I to the world. R. GOSPEL Mark 8:27-35 Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of Caesarea Philippi. Along the way he asked his disciples, Who do people say that I am? They said in reply, John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets. And he asked them, But who do you say that I am? Peter said to him in reply, You are the Christ. Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him. He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days. He spoke this openly. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do. He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it. HOMILY PROFESSION OF FAITH Please Stand I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (bow here) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, 3 who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST PREPARATION OF THE ALTAR AND GIFTS OFFERTORY ANTIPHON (9:15AM) Sanctificavit Moyses altare Domino, offerens super illud holocaust, et immolans victimas: fecit sacrificium vespertinum in odorem suavitatis Domino Deo, in conspectus filiorum Israel. OFFERTORY HYMN (4PM & 7:30AM) LASST UNS ERFREUEN 410 All Creatures of Our God and King Celebrant: Pray brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. R. May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church. SANCTUS MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION Moses consecrated an altar to the Lord, and presented thereupon burnt offerings and sacrificial victims; he made an evening sacrifice as a fragrant offering to the Lord, in the presence of the sons of Israel. OFFERTORY ANTHEM (11AM) Edward Bairstow The King of Love My Shepherd Is ( )

4 AGNUS DEI ECCE AGNUS DEI Celebrant: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. R. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. HOLY COMMUNION All Catholics who have prepared themselves to receive Holy Communion are invited to come forward. Our brothers and sisters of other faiths are invited to approach with arms crossed over the chest to signal their desire to receive a blessing. COMMUNION ANTIPHON (4PM, 7:30 & 11AM) COMMUNION ANTIPHON (9:15AM) Qui vult venire post me, abneget semetipsum: et tollat crucem suam, et sequitur me. COMMUNION MEDITATION (11AM) Charles Gounod Ave Verum Corpus ( ) Ave, verum corpus natum de Maria Virgine: vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine: cuius latus perforatum unda fluxit sanguine: esto nobis praegustatum, in mortis examine. O dulcis, O pie, O Jesu, Fili Mariae. Miserere mei. HYMN OF THANKSGIVING Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. Hail, true Body, born of the Virgin Mary, who having truly suffered, was sacrificed on the cross for mankind, whose pierced side flowed with blood: May this be for us a foretaste of the Heavenly banquet in the trial of death. O sweet, O holy, O Jesus Son of Mary, have mercy on me. BICENTENNIAL 528 Gift of Finest Wheat CLOSING HYMN NUN DANKET 641 Now Thank We All Our God COPYRIGHT ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Musical excerpts reprinted under OneLicence.net, license no. A Lectionary for Mass for Use in the Dioceses of the United States, second typical edition, Copyright 2001, 1998, 1997, 1986, 1970 And so it all begins This weekend we have the choirs back Yes! I missed the sacred music provided by the Men s Schola and the full Cathedral Choir. The gifts and talents of these people add so much to our Cathedral liturgies that builds on the beauty of the Cathedral itself. Thank you to Dr. Ostermann and Scola/Choir members for their dedication to their craft. Also on the agenda is our first PARISH BREAKFAST! I m amazed, but not surprised, at how well these go over in our parish. They always draw large crowds, the food is excellent, and the camaraderie it creates between parishioners is even better. The parish breakfasts are just one way in which we create community, a goal we should all have as priest/parishioners. A big thank you to the cooks, servers, cleaners, and other volunteers who expend time and energy sponsoring them and making them so successful. As your reading this, I m probably doing confirmation interviews with our students. Mo Irvine has come up with a new program which is more user friendly for our confirmation candidates. The goal for the program (and all of parish life and formation) is to create a Culture of Faith. Next Sunday (23rd), is Welcome Back Sunday. We start Family Program and Religious Education. Please note: IF YOU HAVEN T REGISTERED YOUR CHILD FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION, PLEASE DO! (Green forms are in the narthex; or call the parish office and talk to Mo). A heartfelt thank you to all teachers and volunteers who stepped forward this year to help form our children in the faith. It s a great service to our parish! Welcome Back Sunday also includes a Welcome Back Picnic. Our local Marquette council of the Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a Fall festival for our parish families from 11:30 to 1:30. We will be on the 5th Street driveway near the Mother s Garden. There will be food, games, face painting, bounce house and overall fun! Again, we want to create a thriving parish community; that s our goal. So come out and join the gang, and especially if you re a new parishioner it is a great way to acclimate yourself to parish life! Last but not least, RCIA begins Wednesday evening, Sept. 26. If you know of someone who desires to become Catholic, or if you are not Catholic and reading this letter and would like to examine the Catholic faith, please call the parish office. In our Second Reading today, St. James says that faith without works cannot save the one who professes it. If we don t act upon our faith it becomes nothing more than empty rhetoric. The impact of faith starts with our designated roles within the Body of Christ: Husbands and wives act upon their faith by sharing parental duties; children and teens act upon their faith by being responsible and obedient; the clergy act upon their faith by preaching the Gospel; parishes act upon their faith by creating viable parish life and a culture of faith. Let s have a year where our faith and good works bring out the best in our parish and in each other. Fr. James Morgan 4

5 Parish Breakfast Please join us for breakfast TODAY after all the morning Masses. Best deal in town! (Free will offering.) New Office Hours during Parish Buffet Breakfasts In an effort to better serve our parishioners YOU! a member of the Cathedral staff will be downstairs in the entrance of the Parish Hall on Sundays during the parish breakfasts on a trial basis this year. We will advertise Sundays when someone will be there a week in advance as well as that weekend via the bulletin. It may not be every Sunday that there is a breakfast, but our hope is to be able to have someone there for the majority of our Sunday breakfasts.
