4 The Origin of Ember Days The termember daysrefers to three days set apart for fasting, abstinence, and prayer during each of the four seasons of the year.the purpose of their introduction was to thank God for the gifts of nature, to teach men to make use of them in moderation, and to assist the needy. Ember days (corruption from Lat. Quatuor Tempora, four times) are the days at the beginning of the seasons ordered by the Church as days offastand abstinence. They were definitely arranged and prescribed for the entire Church by Pope Gregory VII ( ) for the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday after 13 December (S. Lucia), after Ash Wednesday, after Whitsunday, and after 14 September (Exaltation of the Cross). The purpose of their introduction, besides the general one intended by allprayerand fasting, was to thankgodfor thegiftsof nature, to teach men to make use of them in moderation, and to assist the needy. The Ember Days are penitential, with many references to fasting, but their place in the liturgical calendar gives them distinct characters. As they have come down to us, the Ember Week of Lent, coming early in Lent, intensifies the spirit of Lent. The Ember Week of Christmas, which is more ancient than the Season of Advent, is a preparation for the celebration of Christmas. The Ember Week following Pentecost draws us more intensely into the meaning of Pentecost. The September Ember Week has a particular reference to thanksgiving for the harvest. Our Ember Days: September 19, 21, December 19, 21, 22, 2018 March 13, 15, 16, 2019 June 12, 14, 15, 2019 The catechetical theme is Enlisting Witnesses of Jesus Christ. Catechesis is a very special ministry in the Church and it is only fitting that we invite the entire church community to reflect on the responsibly to hand on the faith and be a witness to the Gospel. Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be/are called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Those working with the CCD Program, Liturgy of the Word with Children/Wee Believers, the Preschool Program, RCIA, VBS and Youth Group are/will be recognized. 7 Annual Blessing Of Pets Saturday Morning September 29, :00 a.m. In front of Newman House (sorry no rain date available) Catechesis of the Good Shepherd We are religious by nature, and this is most evident in the religious imaginations of our young children. CGS fosters this religious imagination through childdirected activities, handson learning, and collaborative work. In the atrium, the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd learning space, children grow in friendship with the Good Shepherd while exploring miniature mass vessels and vestments, using interactive maps of the Holy Land, and working with dioramas of Jesus parables. The atrium provides children with a quiet, reflective space to ponder our faith, and deepen their relationship with the Good Shepherd. There are several openings for the Tuesday afternoon session. Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults And Children RCIA/RCIC is the process by which adults and children over the age of 8 are received into the Catholic Church. The focus of the program is to instruct adults and children on the beliefs and teachings of the Catholic Church, while furthering their spiritual development.
