Profile Relating to the Parish of Holy Trinity Ilkeston In the Diocese of Derby Information for applicants for the post of Associate Priest House for Duty
Contacts Priest in Charge: Bishop Roger Jupp Tel: Churchwardens: Mrs Nicky Bailey Tel: Geoff Raby Tel:
Introduction We are looking to appoint a priest to the post of Associate Priest on a House for Duty basis in order to strengthen the ministry team in the parish. In the diocese of Derby, parishes are grouped together into Mission and Ministry Areas (MMAs) and we are linked to the parish of St Laurence Long Eaton which is located about 7 miles away. Our Priest in Charge, Bishop Roger Jupp, is also the Vicar of St Laurence. Both parishes have Resolutions A, B, and C in place, are in the Anglo-Catholic tradition and under the episcopal care of the Bishop of Ebbsfleet. Although the parishes are not geographically contiguous they do have close links, including some joint services and it is hoped that this cooperation can be built on in the future. The recent history of the parishes will help to explain our current position. In April 2010 the last Vicar of Holy Trinity retired and in November 2010 the then Vicar of St Laurence, Fr Simon Ellis, was additionally appointed as Priest-in- Charge of Holy Trinity. He resigned from both positions in April 2011 to join the Ordinariate. This understandably caused some discomfort in the parishes and particularly at St Laurence, where about 20 people from the congregation also went to the Ordinariate. At Holy Trinity, as far as we are aware, only 1 person left for the Ordinariate but, with Fr Simon s departure, it was the second time within 2 years that a vacancy had arisen and some disquiet and resentment was felt. During the first vacancy, Holy Trinity had help from an Associate Priest (for 2 days a week) who also worked in NHS chaplaincy. When the second vacancy arose he increased his number of days to 4 as he also helped out at St Laurence. With the appointment of Bishop Roger to both incumbencies in June 2012 the Associate Priest reverted to the original 2 days and subsequently became a non-stipendiary Honorary Assistant Priest, but towards the end of last year, decided that he needed to devote all his energies to chaplaincy work. Since that time Bishop Roger has been covering a full programme of services at both churches with some help from visiting clergy which has been very gratefully received. It soon became clear, however, that this was unsustainable and the diocese has agreed that we can seek to strengthen the ministry team. Thought was given to the most appropriate way of doing this and it was felt that a House for Duty position was the best way forward, principally so that there would once again be a priestly presence in the parish. At Holy Trinity there is strong support from the laity. The Churchwardens deal with building and premises matters and much administration and there is a very efficient PCC Secretary. A new Treasurer was appointed last year and she now works with willing help from the former Treasurer to achieve good financial management. There is excellent support from a very experienced Servers Team and also strong support in the area of pastoral care.
Statement of need The parish needs someone who:- Is committed to the Church of England and its catholic tradition. Is sympathetic to the wishes of the parish with regard to Resolutions A, B and C. Identifies strongly with the catholic way of doing things with regard to liturgy and church life. Has a rich spirituality and prayerful approach. Values a dignified and disciplined approach to the sacraments and worship: traditional but not inflexible. Will be active in mission, growth and outreach in so far as the constraints of available time allow. Will be welcoming and sympathetic to families, young people and newcomers: looking to encourage and nurture them in the faith. Will provide leadership, in collaboration with the Parish Priest, to, and work co-operatively with, the PCC.
Job Description The priest appointed to this role will be Associate Priest of Holy Trinity Ilkeston: Bishop Roger Jupp will continue to be the Priest in Charge. This is a House for Duty position, i.e. he will not be in receipt of a stipend but will be able to live in Holy Trinity Vicarage in exchange for 2 days per week plus Sunday duties. The post will be for a fixed term with the duration being determined by the successful candidate s personal circumstances. He will qualify for full removal expenses and resettlement grant. He will be reimbursed for all normal parochial expenses but not for heating, lighting, cleaning and gardening at the Vicarage. He will be entitled to 22 days holiday in a full year. He will generally preside at the Sunday services of Mass and Evensong and at the Masses on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He will also be expected to preside at Masses at the principal feasts of the Church. It is envisaged, though, that this liturgical and sacramental role will be shared to some extent with Bishop Roger so as to enable him to retain a pastoral and presidential position proper to his responsibility as parish priest. Occasional offices will be shared with Bishop Roger by mutual negotiation on a needs basis. He will be integrated into all the normal structures of the parish, deanery and diocese. He will be expected to provide leadership to the PCC and Standing Committee and to be the designated chairman of the meetings of the PCC in collaboration with the Parish Priest. He will promote the mission of the Church to the parish and its people. He will work towards strengthening the church s links with the community. He will provide pastoral care to the congregation and the sick and needy of the parish. He will be expected to work co-operatively with the Priest in Charge in providing mutual support and, particularly, cover at St Laurence s Long Eaton for holidays and other absences, as indeed Bishop Roger will provide corresponding cover at Holy Trinity.
Information about the area and location of the parish The town of Ilkeston is located in Derbyshire along the border with Nottinghamshire. The population identifies with both Nottingham (7 miles away and with Derby (10 miles away). Both cities are important regional centres and between them have a wide variety of cultural and entertainment venues, educational establishments and large shopping developments. Ilkeston enjoys easy access to the M1 motorway and there are mainline stations at Derby, Nottingham, Long Eaton and East Midlands Parkway. East Midlands International airport is within 20 minutes travelling distance. There are good transport links to both Derby and Nottingham. Although the town is urban and industrial it is surrounded by attractive countryside and the Peak District National Park is about 20 miles away. This part of Derbyshire has a strong industrial heritage and Ilkeston became prosperous at the end of the 19 th century on the back of the coal mining, iron and textiles industries. These traditional industries have now largely been replaced by small manufacturing and service enterprises, but textiles remain mainly in the form of upholstery and lingerie manufacture. There are large numbers of people who commute to Nottingham or Derby. The population of the town is about 38,000. The parish itself is located to the north of the town centre (about 2/3rds of a mile away). It is geographically small and is between the main town and housing estates to the north. There is a mixture of different types of residential housing, shops, and industrial units including a large industrial estate. The parish has no clear geographical identity of its own and does not correspond to any local authority unit. (See maps in Appendix A) Accommodation Holy Trinity Vicarage is about 50 yards from the church. It was purpose built as a Vicarage for the church in It comprises of a lounge, dining room, study with store off, kitchen with utility and larder off, cloakroom, hall and entrance lobby. There are four bedrooms (2 double, two single), a bathroom, WC, and upstairs box room. There is a large front garden with parking for several vehicles and a private lawned area to the rear of the property. (See a floor plan at Appendix B) The community The parish itself is in a semi-suburban area of the town without any real heart or centre. The main church in Ilkeston is located in the town s market place about 2/3rds of a mile from Holy Trinity. About half the parish is residential; the rest includes a large industrial estate, and a number of other businesses as well as half of a Tesco s superstore. The housing is mixed but predominantly terraced and semi-detached with some new developments. The socio-economic makeup of the parish is mainly in groups 3 to 7 (as defined by the Office of National Statistics equivalent to C and D under the previous classification) and there is very little ethnic mix. The parish borders Cotmanhay (in the parish of Cotmanhay and Shipley) which is one of the most socially deprived areas in the country. There are a limited number of amenities and facilities within the parish itself, but these include the following:- Charlotte Street Infants School and Granby Junior School. A leisure centre with swimming pool. A Squash Club. Three pubs and two restaurants. A Tesco Extra Store - the parish boundary goes through the middle of it. Aldi Supermarket. The Arena Church a Pentecostalist-type Christian centre. All normal services and facilities are available in Ilkeston with further choice in Derby and Nottingham.
A little history The parish was formed in the 1880s out of the neighbouring parish of St Mary s to cater for what was then a thriving industrial community based mainly on coal mining and there were at that time a number of pits located in the parish. It was also formed out of the enthusiasm of the Anglo-Catholic revival of those times: a tradition that remains unbroken to this day. The church building The church was built in the 1880s in the Gothic style and is constructed in brick with coursed rock-faced sandstone facing, with ashlar window surrounds. It is not a listed building. It is located with roads to 3 sides, there being a garden to the south. There is limited on-road parking available, some of it restricted on weekdays In the early 1980s the 3 western bays of the nave and the north aisle were partitioned off to form a church hall. This has left the church consisting of the chancel and a small truncated portion of the nave, leaving it feeling somewhat out of proportion. The church therefore is not spacious and we can struggle to get everyone in on the occasional big events. It therefore does not easily lend itself to non-worship events such as brass band or choir recitals. The church can seat a maximum of about 150, although some of that would be behind pillars with obstructed views of the sanctuary. There is access to the church and hall for the disabled. The church hall is equipped with a kitchen and toilets and is used for refreshments after Sunday Mass and for other social events. A number of other groups also pay to use the hall such as the Brownies and Royal British Legion. The hall provides a very useful facility and there is still scope for more use by the wider community. Apart from the main church there are 2 side chapels: the Lady Chapel, where weekday masses are said, and a smaller Magdalene Chapel (used only occasionally) and which is mainly used for additional seating when the church is full (e.g. when we have Baptisms etc.) Again, there is some scope here for rearrangement of the Magdalene Chapel which currently isn t being used in the way originally envisaged when the church was reordered in the 1980s. There is a garden to the south which slopes away. This is maintained on a regular basis by a volunteer and we have 2 or 3 days a year when a large group of volunteers get involved The interior of the church is attractive and in generally good order. Over the course of the last few years it has been completely redecorated and re-carpeted. We have also recently had an overhaul of the electrics to bring them up to date with current requirements. The hearing loop system has also recently been renewed. A Quinquennial Inspection was carried out in late 2009 and highlighted a number of areas externally which need attention, mainly to the roof, gable ends and rain water goods. Some remedial work has been carried out, mainly to the roof, but there is much still to do. We have established a building fund to meet the cost of this further work and it is hoped that we may be able to afford to get this work done before next winter. (See Appendix C for photographs of the church) Church life There are 66 people on the Electoral Role (10 resident, 56 non-resident) and the parish has a population of about Worship at Holy Trinity is dignified and firmly in the Anglo-Catholic tradition, with Sung Mass at 11 o clock being our main Sunday service. The service is based on Common Worship with permitted additions from the Roman Missal, there is a robed choir and incense is used. The attendance is regularly in excess of 30 and commonly up to 40. Evensong, using a service based on the Book of Common Prayer is held at 6 p.m. on Sundays except for the first Sunday of the month (when there is a joint service of Evensong and Benediction at St Laurence) and on the third Sunday this is followed by Benediction. There is a regular attendance of about 15. In addition we have a Mass on Tuesday mornings at 9.30 and on Thursday Evenings at This is currently a lay-led service of readings, prayers and Holy Communion from the Reserved Sacrament but it is envisaged that this will become a said Mass in the future. The attendance at these services is generally about 12. Other Masses are celebrated on some holy days especially during Lent and Holy Week. The
worshipping figures for October 2012 show that the average for Sunday worship was 43 and for weekday worship 13. The congregation is mainly middle aged and elderly. Music plays an important part in our services and we have a regular Organist and Choir Master, Peter West, and an Assistant Organist, Ruth Bedford. We also have a dedicated and long serving choir who are robed. We are affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music. We have an experienced and dedicated team of Servers and there are usually 4 or 5 robed and in the sanctuary. Occasional Offices during 2012 were as follows:- Baptisms: 8 (6 under 1 year) Funerals: 10 (7 in church and 3 at crematorium/ cemetery on behalf of Holy Trinity) Weddings: 1 We have few regular families, children or young people and hence no Sunday School. One important exception to this is the Brownies, who hold their Church Parade at Mass once a month. This is also attended by parents, grandparents etc. The Brownies use the church hall on Monday evenings and we have developed a good relationship with their leaders. Home Communions are given on a regular basis both to the elderly in their own homes and in Residential Care Homes within the parish. This is currently undertaken mainly by lay people. (See Appendix D for photographs of church life) Church activities We endeavour to have a busy social calendar, organised by a committed Social Committee to help with fund raising, but getting local involvement can be challenging because of our location and the lack of any community cohesion. Our regular events include the following:- Christmas Lunch Shrove Tuesday Supper Summer Fair Jazz Evening Harvest Supper Musical Recitals We also have a Friends and Neighbours Group which meets every month with either an invited speaker or a trip out. We have a Crafters group which meets on a regular basis. There is a strong Walsingham Cell with regular social events and an annual pilgrimage to the shrine. This year we were led, for the first time for many years, by our own Parish Priest, Bishop Roger, whose intention it is to lead these in future years. This is done in close co-operation with the Cell at St Laurence s. A weekly newsletter is produced which goes on our website. In 2009 we formed a separate charity, Friends of Holy Trinity Ilkeston, to act as a bridge between the church and the community and to raise funds. It runs a Private Members Lottery (and has been successful in raising in excess of 3000) but has not yet expanded beyond that. We also have a Cleaning and Maintenance group who look after the tidying and cleaning of the church and ornaments and the provision of flowers. (See Appendix D for photographs of church activities)
Outreach and community involvement We have a good, established (but informal) relationship with Charlotte Street Infants School and one lay member of the church is on the Board of Governors. There have in the past been regular visits to the school and some assemblies held in church and it is hoped that this is something that could be revived. There is also Rutland Junior School in the parish and there is some scope for attempting to establish a relationship with them. We are regular visitors, including for Home Communions, to a number of Residential Care Homes in the area. The local Brownies use Holy Trinity for their monthly Church Parade and there is a mutual feeling that they are very much part of the life of the parish. Parish finance A copy of the accounts for 2012 may be found in Appendix D. Our income has been sufficient to meet our outgoings without the need to draw on reserves, which are in any event small. We would like to be able to pay our parish share in full but this has not proved possible for the last few years. We are committed, however, to paying at least 50% of this. We have a stewardship scheme in place having gone through the Full Measure process some years ago. We have regular and consistent giving but this is insufficient for the needs of the parish. New ways of funding need to be found. Friends of Holy Trinity Ilkeston has already had success in raising funds and contributing towards church costs (e.g. new notice boards) and a widening use of this separate charity is something that will be explored moving forward. Despite our weak financial position, we place much importance on our own charitable giving and support a number of causes, and have made contributions towards diocesan causes. The strengths and weaknesses of the parish Strengths The maintenance of a regular pattern of worship on Sundays and some weekdays and throughout the course of the Church s calendar. Dignified worship, with music on Sundays and use of incense, supported by a strong team of servers. A loyal and regular congregation. A strong social programme with good lay involvement. Weaknesses Weak attendance from families and young people (except once a month with Brownies). A low profile in the community. A challenging geographical location. Weak financial position.
The way ahead Whilst the celebration of the mass is central to our life at Holy Trinity we recognise that we have a wider pastoral mission. We are therefore seeking to develop: A clear vision for the future. Growing church attendance. Attracting more families and young people. Reaching out to the community. Raising the profile of the church. Making ourselves more accessible and welcoming. Improving our financial position. We are looking forward to the appointment of an Associate Priest who will work co-operatively with the laity of the parish and our Parish Priest in developing and implementing our vision and plans for the future.
