2 To the Most Holy Virgin I entrust this Year for Priests. I ask her to awaken in the heart of every priest a generous and renewed commitment to the ideal of self-oblation to God and the Church. May this example lead all priests to offer that witness of unity with their Bishop, with one another and with the lay faithful, which today, as ever, is so necessary. Despite all the evil present in our world, the words which Christ spoke to His Apostles in the Upper Room continue to inspire us: In the world you have tribulation; but take courage, I have overcome the world. (Jn 16:33). Our faith in the Divine Master gives us the strength to look to the future with confidence. Dear Priests, Christ is counting on you. In the footsteps of the Curé of Ars, let yourselves be enthralled by him. In this way you too will be, for the world in our time, heralds of hope, reconciliation and peace! With my blessing, Pope Benedict XVI A Prayer for the Year for Priests The faithful of the diocese are encouraged to participate in the Year for Priests with the following prayer: Father, you have appointed your Son Jesus Christ eternal High Priest. Through Your Son, hear the prayers we offer for our priests and our Bishops in the Diocese of Metuchen during this Year for Priests. May they be men after Your Divine Heart embracing all that You have taught us. Keep them healthy in mind, body and spirit; keep them holy; keep them chaste; keep them safe in the embrace of Mary, the mother of priests. Generously give them Your spirit so they may serve You with undivided hearts. Lord Jesus, increase the workers in Your vineyard of the Diocese of Metuchen by enlightening and strengthening those men You are calling to Your Priesthood. May they respond with a willing heart and a generous spirit. St. John Vianney, pray for us.

19 Prayer for Priests O Jesus, our great High Priest, Hear my humble prayers on behalf of your priest (here mention the name of a priest you would like to pray for) Give him a deep faith a bright and firm hope and a burning love which will ever increase in the course of his priestly life. In his loneliness, comfort him In his sorrows, strengthen him In his frustrations, point out to him that it is through suffering that the soul is purified, and show him that he is needed by the Church, he is needed by souls, he is needed for the work of redemption. O loving Mother Mary, Mother of Priests, take to your heart your son who is close to you because of his priestly ordination, and because of the power which he has received to carry on the work of Christ in a world which needs him so much. Be his comfort, be his joy, and especially help him to live and to defend the ideals of consecrated celibacy. Amen Written by John Joseph Cardinal Carberry (+1998) Archbishop of St. Louis
