Over the next few weeks we reach the end of the great Easter Season, which is punctuated by three big feast days: Ascension Day, the Day of Pentecost, and Trinity Sunday. Each of these feasts reveals to us more about God, and about the relationship between the human and the divine. On the day of Ascension the congregation gathers at the West End of the Cathedral to hear the story of the departure of Jesus from the physical world after spending 40 days with his disciples after he rose from the dead. In a great procession we then move beyond the Easter Garden to the altar to celebrate the Eucharist, moving, as if with those early disciples, onwards on our journey with Christ. Nine days later on the Day of Pentecost, we celebrate the outpouring of God s living presence upon his people in the person of the Holy Spirit. This is, in many ways, the birthday of the church. A week later we are invited to meditate on the extraordinary mystery and complex simplicity of the Trinity. As we make this journey together this year we have a number of ways in which those insights into the nature of God will be explored through slightly different lenses, adding to our experience. On 5 May representatives from the deaf and hard of hearing community worship in a distinctive service in the Trinity Chapel, helping us to think deeper about the nature of the voice of the church. The next day we are invited to give thanks for the particular gift of poetry in the life of faith at a special Evensong. Services for Christian Aid, and Dementia Action Week further expand the conversation. On 19 May, fresh from celebrating the Royal Wedding, candidates from across the Diocese will be baptised and confirmed. At the end of June the Cathedral is filled to capacity again for a joyful service of ordination as new ministers take up their calling.
