5 How 4 Acts of Love Will Make Your Church Irresistible Joani and Thom Schultz are co-authors of "Why Nobody Wants to Go to Church Anymore: How 4 Acts of Love Will Make Your Church Irresistible." The church, as we know it in America, is dying. Fewer and fewer people are participating in weekly services. Younger generations are staying away in record numbers. After researching the attitudes of the unchurched and the dechurched people who have never been part of a congregation and people who are no longer part of one we ve identified four frequently cited reasons people avoid church: 1. You judge me even before you know me. 2. You re not interested in my thoughts or questions. You only want to lecture me. 3. The church is filled with posers and know-it-alls. 4. I don t experience God at church. This is what people are saying, whether we like it or not. Unfortunately, when we share this with church leaders, many simply get defensive and take aim at the lost sheep, blaming them for their lack of interest in congregational life. These religious leaders tell us they re not interested in evaluating what they could do differently. They tend to view their traditional ministry methods as sacrosanct. But we believe we can improve the methodology without altering the message of Christ. We ve seen four approaches work to counteract the public s aversion to church: 1. Radical hospitality: People crave a sense of belonging. They re looking for the kind of open acceptance that Jesus exemplified initiating with love rather than condemnation. 2. Fearless conversation: This interactive culture wants to engage in a dialogue about faith. Rather than merely passively listen, they want to converse and ask hard questions. 3. Genuine humility: People hunger for a community that says: We re all in this together. We all struggle. No one has all the answers. We re all trying to know and follow Jesus together. 4. Divine anticipation: People want to know God is real. In addition to the biblical stories of God, people long to experience God in action today. In the end, fewer people are drawn to the church as an institution, or a building, or a performance. But they do yearn for God and an authentic community of the faithful. Page 5

12 Diakonia Service As Greek Orthodox Christians our participation in worship services is paramount. When we are Baptized and Chrismated, we accept the responsibility of being active Orthodox Christians, not just in our lives but in the services of the Church. Each of us has our different talents that God has given us, whether that means serving Him as a Chantor, Choir Member, Altarboy etc., we all work together to Glorify HIM! In the same way, we Glorify God with our talents and our service to the Church, some are also asked to be an Epistle Reader, a most important and very Holy responsibility. Each ministry of our Church will have this Blessed and Holy responsibility as an Epistle Reader of the Church each month. February Sunday School Children March Parish Council April Altar Boys May Philoptochos Society Therefore, let us use our talents to worship God so that He too may say to us Well done you good and faithful servant, enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

14 PARISH NEWS CHRISTMAS GARLAND FOR THE SANCTUARY BALCONY, LARGE POINSETTIAS FOR THE SOLEA, CULTURAL CENTER CHRISTMAS TREE, EPIPHANY WATER BOTTLES In loving memory of Gus Rose. Offered by the Dan McGinley Family. In loving memory of my husband Arthur Gamouras who is deeply missed. Offered by his wife Demetra. In loving memory of our father and papou, Arthur Gamouras who is deeply missed. Offered by his children and grandchildren. For the continued health and well being of my family. Offered by Zoe Nicklos. For unto us a child is born... While the story of the Nativity is timeless and immutable, every Christmas pageant is a unique occurrence, formed by circumstance, personality, happenstance, and this year, the weather of all things!!! And yet, no matter what, our children present us with the most wondrous gift, a reminder about what the Christmas season is truly about. They rekindle our faith with their unbridled joy. It is always a small miracle that happens on our solea with the pageant. So many people over the years have helped with the pageant. I have never even come close to giving Chris Costakis his due. He is the best right-hand-man ever!!! All these years he has managed to control the shepherds, the innkeepers, and various other excited children in the narthex. He never missed a cue, and the pageant always appeared to run seamlessly. Our magnificent choir, under the direction of Marlene Ego, is the finishing touch on the pageant. All those beautiful Christmas carols do so much to enhance the pageant. I have to make special mention of our two angels, Sophia and Alexandra Tzougros who sang such beautiful solos. Having had them in Sunday School, I can tell you that they are two very special young ladies. I need to thank my friends, Toni Copoulos and Tracy Smith, who made new wings for the heavenly host. However, due to time constraints this year, and lack of manpower, our angels did not get to wear them, but they will be there in the coming years. It is a daunting thing to find out about two hours before the Divine Liturgy that Mary and two of the Kings are not coming to the pageant, and realizing that others will probably not show up either. Grace Busse made so many calls that morning trying to straighten things out. She also helped with the set-up and take down. I am grateful for her support throughout the years. I also want to thank all those parents who brought their children to the rehearsal on Saturday and often had to change their plans on Christmas Eve so their children could participate in the pageant. While the pageant was the smallest this year, it was very beautiful, and the credit goes to our wonderful children. We have so much to be grateful for in our parish. We have a magnificent edifice. People come from all over the world to marvel at its beauty. It is a legacy from our forebears, and a testimony to their tenacity and determination to make it in the USA. We have had many dedicated priests, who have shepherded this congregation through depression, war, and other trials and tribulations. We are now in our 4 th or 5 th generation of membership, and it is a wonderful community of people. We are a blessed people. But our greatest blessings are those children who year after year stand up on the solea and re-enact the Nativity story. May it ever be so. Susan Gianos

15 PARISH LIFE STEWARDSHIP CHALLENGE It is no secret that our historic and unique mother parish, the Annunciation Church, has been experiencing financial difficulty and debt, as well as underperforming levels of monetary stewardship. While this creates great strain and hardship in our day to day operations, and limits our ability to grow our ministries, it is also no secret that there is tremendous potential for our parish to flourish. There is wonderful enthusiasm and energy in our Sunday worship and fellowship, and there are children s smiling faces from one side of the church to other. Our Sunday congregation is a beautiful tapestry of people rich in character and spirit. The faith and the love of our community can more than make up for our difficulties. In order to take the next step toward our future, the following challenge is offered: Become a 2% Steward (the biblical mandate is 10%), and offer $2 per candle and $2 per tray (instead of the $1 that has been offered since the 1950s). For example: Gross Income 2% Stewardship $30,000 $600 $40,000 $800 $50,000 $1,000 $60,000 $1,200 $75,000 $1,500 $100,000 $2,000 $150,000 $3,000 $200,000 $4,000 $250,000 $5,000 Please take this challenge as seriously as you can. Your decision is a personal matter between you and our Lord who has given us all that we have. First and foremost please continue worshipping with us and inviting your friends and family to join you, and know that our doors are open to all who desire to pray with us. Page 15
