5 FR. ANGELO ARTEMAS Listen Up While no one really recalls, the womb is a place of wonder. It is an environment brimming with vitality, growth and life. For the living being residing therein, it is a place of protection, warmth and nurture. There is no hunger in the womb, and no apparent discomfort. Most children are born crying simply because they were more comfortable and happier in the womb. Upon birth, they experience cold and hunger for the first time, and many overwhelming sights and sounds. Though not completely silent, the womb is a place of stillness and solitude. The living being within actually recognizes the mother s heartbeat, and may even recognize the mother s voice, as well as the father s, before being born to this world. Many unique and unfathomable experiences take place in the mystery-filled and holy womb. Too often, lent is deemed simply a time for dietary restrictions and sacrifice. Not enough emphasis is placed on stillness, solitude and wonder. Saint Gregory Palamas, commemorated on the second Sunday of lent, is considered a champion of hesychia, or the practice of silence, stillness and solitude. Most people today have a hard time experiencing silence. When moments of silence are called for in assemblies, arenas and stadiums, they tend to be awkward at best. Sister Joan Chittister comments on the lack of silence as follows: Radios wake us up and TV timers turn off the day full of programming. There is music in cars, busses, elevators, waiting rooms, and surround sound that follows us from the family room to the kitchen to the bathroom. We exercise and lie on beaches with earphones, we surround ourselves with noise, and we create a sound barrier for the soul. It protects us from listening to others and to God. There is a listening crisis in our time. Mobile phones and computers may in fact keep us from connecting with others, as we ramble on about ourselves. Children don t listen to parents and teachers. Too many parents aren t listening and paying attention to their children. Classrooms, workplaces and homes are filled with depressed and lonely people who are not getting any attention. We cannot care for others without listening, and we cannot pray without silence. Some say that you only live once (YOLO), so you have to maximize all the fun stuff that this world has to offer. It is true that you only live once, and what a shame it would be if we waste that life by not listening, connecting, caring, nurturing, helping and loving others; while connecting with God in the process. The nine month period in the womb is a short time of wonder preceding a new life. Our time on earth is a short time preceding a new and eternal life. Every Pascha is a celebration of this new life in Christ, and every lent is another chance to listen and to experience and sense His wonder. There is a beautiful new birth and new life awaiting us. That life is possible through the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Through God s grace and mysteries, and through the church which is our mother, we have the full opportunity to hear and to know the voice of the Father now; and not just in the afterlife. Are we listening? Page 5

6 PRESIDENT S CORNER Greetings in His Name! Can you believe we are entering the Pascha season already?! Where has the year gone? Our Annunciation community has been extremely busy and active during the months of February and March. We are continuing to grow under the leadership and spiritual guidance of Fr. Angelo and Fr. David. It has definitely been a great start to 2013! February was a very exciting time in our parish. During the weekend of February 8th-10th our GOYA boys and YAL men represented the Annunciation Parish at the Western Region Basketball Tournament in Omaha, Nebraska. The teams were very successful as the GOYAN s brought back a 1st Place finish and the YAL men finished in 3rd Place. What a great weekend for some fun and fellowship! Under the leadership of the Parish Council and many of our dedicated parishioners, the weekend of February 16th and 17th we hosted the 2nd Annual Taste of Greece. Again, it was a great success! It s truly remarkable how each year our Annunciation families and young adults come together and work for a common goal...our Annunciation Parish. I would like to thank everyone who helped make it a success and to all that came and supported the event. Putting on food festivals is definitely in our DNA! Our Orthodoxy 101 program and presentations are growing in popularity and our parishioners are continually showing a thirst for knowledge about our Orthodox faith. It s been a great addition to our ministries at Annunciation. March continued with the busy theme and it definitely started out with a bang on the evening of March 2nd. The Best Buddies Chapter of Wisconsin hosted their annual dance in our cultural center. Nearly 400 students and young adults with special needs danced the night away in our Grand Hall. Thank you to several of our Parish Council members and several parishioners who came to visit and observe a wonderful event. What great outreach to our neighbors and students in the Milwaukee area and the state of Wisconsin. On the evening of March 24, we hosted the Sunday of Orthodoxy Vespers with several Orthodox clergy from the Milwaukee area. More importantly, we celebrated our Annunciation Feastday Vespers that evening along with the Divine Liturgy on March 25th. Lastly, but certainly not least, we celebrated the Nameday of Fr. Angelo on March 25th. The Parish Council hosted a social, in his honor, following the Divine Liturgy on March 24th. Χρόνια Πολλά Fr. Angelo! We continue to see increased attendance on Sunday s and within the various events going on in our parish. Our stewardship is continuing to increase each month and our Parish Council is working hard getting our finances in order each week. Please look at our treasurer s and stewardship reports in this month s Koinonia and notice the trends. We still are working in a deficit! I ask that when you read these reports, to continue to reflect and see how you can help our parish. One important way to help is to...get involved! I look forward to seeing everyone at our Pre-Sanctified Liturgies on Wednesday and Friday evenings and worshiping during the Holy Season of Great Lent. In His Name, Kosta Zervas Parish Council President Page 6 April 2013

8 PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS Dear Annunciation Family, The active ladies of Philoptochos have continued their busy schedule. In February, our wonderful Bakers prepared all the pastries for Taste of Greece. With their beautiful display and their smiling faces, pastries were flying off the shelf. Philanthropy is our purpose. The Greek Orthodox Manor is our home that we share with many of our parishioners as well as other residents. Last month Philoptochos treated the Manor residents to a Taste of Greece chicken dinner. This way we contributed to the success of Taste of Greece, as well as fulfilling our ministry of philanthropy. We also donated gift cards to be used by the Manor manager to assist her in helping the residents as needs arise. In February, Father Angelo made a trip to visit our college students at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. It was our joy to underwrite this dinner. These young men and young women are the future of our Church. As a special treat, Father hand carried koulouria for each of the students. A special thank you this month to Marlene Ego who has organized our distribution list. In following the leadership of our Patriarch, we are trying to go green. All members who have addresses on file with us will be receiving Philoptochos notices through . Not to fear those of you that need paper copies, will receive special mailings. For now, please mark your calendars for our April General Meeting on Wednesday, April 17, Plaki Dinner, and Easter Bake Sale at the Plaki Dinner. Lazarus Saturday April 27 th Lazarus and his sisters Martha and Mary, the friends of the Lord Jesus, had given Him hospitality and served Him many times They were from Bethany, a village of Judea. This village is situated in the eastern parts by the foothills of the Mount of Olives, about two Roman miles from Jerusalem. When Lazarus - whose name is a Hellenized form of "Eleazar," which means "God has helped," became ill some days before the saving Passion, his sisters had this report taken to our Saviour, Who was then in Galilee. Nonetheless, He tarried yet two more days until Lazarus died; then He said to His disciples, "Let us go into Judea that I might awake My friend who sleepeth." By this, of course, He meant the deep sleep of death. On arriving at Bethany, He consoled the sisters of Lazarus, who was already four days dead. Jesus groaned in spirit and was troubled at the death of His beloved friend. He asked, "Where have ye laid his body?" and He wept over him. When He drew nigh to the tomb, He commanded that they remove the stone, and He lifted up His eyes, and giving thanks to God the Father, He cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth." And he that had been dead four days came forth immediately, bound hand and foot with the grave clothes, and Jesus said to those standing there, "Loose him, and let him go." This is the supernatural wonder wrought by the Saviour that we celebrate on this day. According to an ancient tradition, it is said that Lazarus was thirty years old when the Lord raised him; then he lived another thirty years on Cyprus and there reposed in the Lord. It is furthermore related that after he was raised from the dead, he never laughed till the end of his life, but that once only, when he saw someone stealing a clay vessel, he smiled and said, "Clay stealing clay." His grave is situated in the city of Kition, having the inscription: "Lazarus the four days dead and friend of Christ." In 890 his sacred relics were transferred to Constantinople by Emperor Leo the Wise, at which time undoubtedly the Emperor composed his stichera for Vespers, "Wishing to behold the tomb of Lazarus..."
