3 Dear Friends, WELCOME. A Message from Our Pastor, Fr. Tim Fairman The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines the word welcome as follows: v. to greet hospitably and with courtesy or cordiality I have been on the Priest Placement Board for the Archdiocese of Chicago for the past 2 ½ years. The board assists Cardinal Cupich by recommending priests to be assigned to eligible parishes as pastor and associate pastor each year. Part of that process includes sending two members of the board of nine priests to parishes in need of a new pastor for what s called a parish listening session in which staff, parish leadership and parish members at large are invited to express their opinions about their parish home. St. Theresa had its own listening session five years ago in preparation for a new pastor coming here me! I ve been to about eight of these parish listening sessions in my time on the board and one of the observations I hear from all sorts of people in the parish we are at is that we (insert parish name here) are the most welcoming parish in the Archdiocese of Chicago! usually this is said with great gusto! I have gotten into the habit lately of asking people at a parish to let us know specifically what it is about their particular home parish that makes it so welcoming. One parish located near O Hare Airport described how they have a ministry to pick people up and take them back to hotels around the airport for Mass that is lovely. Most parishioners will describe their own history of feeling welcomed at a particular parish and how that inspired them to get more involved in parish life. While I don t doubt that many people in a parish do consciously try to be more welcoming of others, if I am being honest, I would say that most parishes, including our own, could do much, much better at greeting hospitably and with courtesy or cordiality. I am haunted by the story of someone who came to St. Theresa a few weeks in a row to check out the place, sat towards the back and was greeted by no one. Not a single person said hello or offered any kind of hospitality. In fact, the person describes sitting in the chair at the welcome table only to be told that he/she wasn t supposed to be sitting in the chair reserved for welcoming! That saddens me. If you noticed in the definition above, welcome is a verb, not a noun. In other words it is action oriented which means that welcoming is an intentional act and something we ALL need to take responsibility for. At this time, I d like to share a few presumptions on my part about welcoming that I probably should have expressed a long time ago: Families with small children should always find a home at St. Theresa for Mass. When I was a child, our parents made sure my four brothers and I went to church every single Sunday, without exception. I have no memories of ever not going to Mass. Little children are unpredictable and sometimes act up in church. Rather than confronting parents about the behavior of their children, how about offering them words of sympathy for their plight? I m not advocating the church become a free-for-all, nor am I saying parents bear no responsibility for the behavior of their children, but I want every family to feel embraced, not judged, for bringing their children to Mass. We are exceedingly blessed to have a very large gathering space in the back of church. I take great delight in witnessing people socializing and greeting one another before and after Mass. These social gatherings create community and God is present in them. My encouragement is that everyone invite the stranger and guest to be a part of the conversation so that they begin to feel comfortable with their new parish. I know there are some who grumble about the disruption of their personal prayer in church. My invitation is that if the noise bothers you, please be a part of the joyful commotion that occurs whenever two or three people are gathered in Christ s name. In other words, join in the fun! You ll be happier in the long run. I will not discourage people from greeting people before or after Mass. When in church for Mass, please say hi to those around you and don t wait for the greeting of peace before the Lamb of God! We are sharing in the One Bread and the One Cup together it makes sense to me to try to form communion with another as we participate in the celebration of the Eucharist together. While I have not officially said we should hold hands together during the Our Father because I sense that is not something this community is generally comfortable with, there is no prohibition from doing that, so if your neighbor is comfortable holding hands, feel free to do so! If you find St. Theresa to be a welcoming place, please feel free to share with me your experience because we can all learn from that! If your experience is the opposite, let me know that too. My goal is indeed to make St. Theresa the most welcoming parish in the Archdiocese of Chicago! That will only happen if each one of us works on making that a goal together. Let s pray that the Holy Spirit will inspire us to be people of hospitality who welcomes friend, neighbor and stranger with equal veracity so that we might truly be one community in Christ. Enjoy the week and God bless you all. Page 3

Thanks to all who contributed gift cards in November to support "homeless" and pregnant/parenting youth at PHS and Fremd. Working together with the other Palatine Faith in Action churches, we collected more than $11,000 in gift cards and many bags of toiletries, granola bars, and clothing! And the members of Thrive Vineyard church once again handwrote encouragement cards for each of the gift bag recipients. Palatine Assisting Through Hope (PATH- packaged the donated items & gift cards, along with toiletries and blankets, into gift bags. They will deliver the bags to PHS and Fremd by December 8 so that social workers can start distributing them to the 95 students. Some of the gift cards will be saved for social workers to utilize for families/students in need throughout the school year. The social workers really appreciate having an emergency stash when there is a family in crisis or a student is waiting for their free & reduced lunch paperwork to be accepted before they can start receiving school meals.
