2 Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion - (EM s) Arriving fifteen (15) minutes before Mass begins will provide you the time to comfortably insure a smooth and beautiful liturgy by doing the following: Know who will serve the Body of Christ. The Sacristan keeps a record to share this ministry with EM s who are able and wants to serve the Body of Christ. Know who will bring the Ciboria to the Altar; Know who will pour the Blood of Christ when the Deacon is not present; Know who will roam with the Deacon or another EM; Check-in with the Sacristan, so he will know all are present to serve. The Sacristan will not have to ask EM s from the Assembly to serve, who are not scheduled, and then tell them they are not needed when the scheduled EM s come the last minute. The complete team (Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Altar Servers and Deacon) is unified in prayer with the Presider in the Vestibule before Mass begins. This will insure a smooth and beautiful liturgy. Thank you. 3 LECTORS Arriving fifteen (15) minutes before Mass begins will provide you the time to comfortably insure a smooth and beautiful liturgy by doing the following: Decide who will read each reading; Pre-read and become familiar with the reading; Pre-read and become familiar with the Prayers of the Faithful (pronunciation of names, additions and deletions), (absent the Deacon); Check-in with the Sacristan, so he will know all are present to serve. The Sacristan will not have to ask a Lector from the Assembly to serve, who is not scheduled, and then tell them they are not needed when the scheduled Lector comes the last minute. The complete team (Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Altar Servers and Deacon) is unified in prayer with the Presider in the Vestibule before Mass begins. This will insure a smooth and beautiful liturgy. Thank you. 4 Model what the entire assembly should be doing: Listening attentively while the Word of God is being proclaimed and the presider delivers his homily; Singing during the Responsorial Psalm and the Gospel Acclamation; Praying the Creed and responding to the Prayer of the Faithful. (Missal, Prayer Card and Song Book are available to you to place at your chairs.) (Please do not run in the Sanctuary. Instead, walk reverently.) It is important that you participate in the liturgy and be and look enthusiastic while you are doing it because you are sitting up front, where the assembly can see you. Look Sharp! Look Beautiful! Take part in what is going on and always remain alert to what the Presider, Deacon or the situation may want of you. NOTE: At times, three (3) Altar Servers are scheduled to provide more opportunity to serve, get more practice to become more comfortable with serving. From the booklet, The Ministry of Communion, by Michael Kwatera, O.S.B. Liturgical ministry is something we grow into, something we shape ourselves into as it shapes us. Such ministry is not something that comes to us readymade, once and for all. Like a fine wine, our ministry is brought to perfection over time, enriched by experience, and savored as a source of joy in the Lord. the call to minister is a gift from God. When you arrive at Mass and you are not scheduled to serve, and would like to serve, just let the Sacristan and /or the Presider know. 5 EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS/LECTORS/ALTAR SERVERS PROPER ATTIRE Dress neatly and appropriately for ministering at the ambo and altar. Preferably, suits, sports jackets, slacks, collared dress shirts, sweaters and slacks for men, and dress shoes. Modest dresses, skirts or dress slacks for women (modest is defined as covering the back, no slits in the skirt/dress, no plunging neckline and no more than two (2) inches above the top of the knee) and dress shoes. Please come ready to serve even if you are not scheduled. It can easily happen that you will be needed. 6 From the booklet, The Ministry of Communion, by Michael Kwatera, O.S.B. EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS - Sharing the Bread There are three (3) kinds of necessary contact in the sharing of Communion: ocular, verbal, and tactile. Dare to let your eyes meet those of the communicant and reflect the wonder of God s love in the Eucharist. Dare to let your voice announce God s invitation to the banquet of eternal life. Dare to let your hands touch those of the communicant as they minister God s holy gifts. Dare to let the communicant feel the texture of the bread and of your own hand; dare to feel the communicant s hand There is something especially beautiful about helping people to receive Communion in the hand. Romaro Guardini has written that the soul s chief instruments and clearest mirrors are the face and hands. Even hands that are permanently soiled (like a mechanic s) are beautiful: they testify that a person s livelihood can be seen in the hands, hands that receive the Lord s saving touch and our reverent one. 7 From the booklet, The Ministry of Communion, by Michael Kwatera, O.S.B. EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS As you wait to begin your service during the liturgy, look out over the congregation and say to yourself: This assembly this gathering of God s holy people of which I am a part is the Body of Christ made visible, audible, and tangible here and now, in this place, at this time. I have accepted God s call to help this assemble, the Body of Christ, to be united with Christ their Head in Holy Communion. Everything I do and say should help them to receive the Lord Jesus more reverently and lovingly. With help, Lord Jesus, I will serve them well. 8 Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EM s) Your Locations for Serving the Blood of Christ to the Assembly The two (2) outside cup ministers need to be in line with the side walls of the Nave. The two (2) inside cup ministers position themselves as follows: One cup minister in line with the Ambo and one cup minister in line with the piano. These locations will provide a wide space between the Body of Christ EM s and the first cup EM s for a smooth and continuous flow by the communicants who receive The Body of Christ. The communicants will be able to pass easily, without stopping, after receiving The Body of Christ, and be able to go to their pews or receive The Blood of Christ. 9 From the booklet, The Ministry of Communion, by Michael Kwatera, O.S.B. EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS Being and Giving the Body of Christ And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus (Col 3:17a) In some places, the giving of Communion Blessings to young children and other noncommunicants is customary. These blessings by the minister fulfill a psychological need for noncommunicants to receive something when others receive Communion. These blessings may take the form of a small sign of the cross on the forehead, a larger one over the person, or a hand laid on the person s head, with or without words. An extraordinary minister can give such a blessing just as clergy do. [May God Bless you, in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen!] AUGUST 25 AUGUST 26 TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME GREEN Andrzej Goroch Sam Lavorato Tina Lavorato Terry Vogl Jack Busch Beau Gillott Toni Carmona John Kermott Margo Lopez Pam Wilkinson Diane Belli Bee Melendez Gina Cochetti Marc Tunzi Anne Cassara Barbara McDonald Rhonda Hurtado Alyssa Hurtado Blake Andersen Noah Anderson Luke Secondo Lily Gill Isabella Requiro Morgan Retterer 9
10 From the booklet, The Ministry of Communion, by Michael Kwatera, O.S.B. EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS If you drop or spill the Precious Blood - DO NOT PANIC! Stop what you are doing. Your demeanor will reassure those communicants in line or, in particular, the person who may have caused the spill. Stop serving and place the purificator over the spill and position yourself over the spill. Notify the Deacon or Priest and /or the Sacristan or have another Eucharistic Minister notify the Deacon or Priest or Sacristan. They will clean up the spill. 11 From the booklet, The Ministry of Communion, by Michael Kwatera, O.S.B. EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS If you drop the Consecrated Host, our calm demeanor at this moment can calm and assure an anxious and embarrassed communicant. Pick up the Host and consume it yourself. If you feel uncomfortable consuming it, place the Host on the corner of the Corporal (white cloth on the Altar). The Deacon, Presider or another Eucharistic Minister will consume the Host. If the Host is not consumed then the Sacristan will dissolve the host in a cup of water. The dissolved host will then be poured into the ground SEPTEMBER 8 SEPTEMBER 9 TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME GREEN Andrzej Goroch Sam Lavorato Tina Lavorato Tina Sammut Terry Vogl Beau Gillott Toni Carmona John Kermott Chris Randall Pam Wilkinson Bee Melendez Alice Wilson Gina Cochetti Barbara McDonald Tom Sanchez Al Stoeberl Jennifer Frazier Suzette Urquides Elizabeth Fuqua Blake Andersen Noah Anderson Audrey Rianda Katherine Beck Emma Beck Maddie Gill 11

EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS Purifying the vessels after Mass - The vessels are to be taken into the Sacristy. when Communion has been distributed, the sacred particles remaining are to be consumed. Crumbs (in the bowl and plates) should be disposed of reverently by consuming them or mixing them with water and drinking the mixture The remnants of wine (the Blood of Christ) left in the chalice, cups and decanter should be consumed by mixing the remnants with water and drinking the mixture. EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS (Lectors and Altar Servers) The perfect Eucharistic Minister is reverent (the inner grace of Christ becomes an outward sign ), unhasting (patient), faithful to schedules, as faithful as humanly possible. Never assuming that someone else will cover a foreseen absence. Arranging a substitute when unable to minister is a mark of courtesy to the assembly and to the other Eucharistic Ministers. Knowledgeable: knowledgeable about this ministry and about the Eucharist. The commitment to serve as a Eucharistic Minister should be accompanied by some knowledge about the basis and guidelines for this ministry, and also some knowledge about the history, theology, and practice of the Eucharist.
