4 MESSAGE FROM FATHER God s Personal Theophany s in Our Lives The Implications of the resurrection By the time you will be in receipt of this issue of the Spirit, we will be in the thralls of Holy Week. The spiritual intensity and drama of Holy Week is unparalleled and unmatched by any other time of the yearit is grueling, tiring and moving. Its final objective is to bring us face-to-face with the empty tomb. In the empty tomb, we encounter the miracle of our Lord s third day resurrection. In His resurrection, His promise to us of our won resurrection becomes believable (I Thes. 4:16). Our hope is not in vain! Christ is risen! Truly, He is risen! And so shall we rise on the last day. The message of our Lord s resurrection flies in the face of the skeptics, nihilists, and fatalists of our modern times. Al of their negative and deluded thinking can t dismiss or refute the reality of Jesus resurrection. As much as they try through their pundits in the halls of academy and university faculties, their arguments before the empty tomb prove to be empty and baseless. They will attempt to explain away the empty tomb by saying the Roman soldiers removed His Body. Such thinking is illogical and foolish! What would they gain by stealing His dead body? Many of us are paralyzed by our fear of death. We attempt to avoid it at all costs. We will go through no small expense to delay its inevitable arrival. Jesus resurrection is the cure for the modern man s fear of death. His message is clear: there is life beyond the tomb. Hear our Lord s words, In My Father s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you, I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. (Jn. 14:2-3). By embracing these words, our fear of death fades away. Our Lord s third-day resurrection is the harbinger of hope. Our earthly suffering and hardships become bearable. How so? They are only temporary! Our illnesses, diseases, psychological disorders will all disappear; they will become fading memories of our short time on earth. In the resurrection everything becomes new and alive to the Orthodox Christian. The Church calls us to make the Lord s resurrection personal. We are called to embrace deeply, the doctrine of the resurrection. It is one of the tenants of the Nicaean Creed. It is central to our Faith as Orthodox Christians. We are emboldened to live our lives with the constant reality of Jesus resurrection before us. By pondering upon it, we find the motivation and will to strive for holiness and to resist the magnetic pull of our morbid, godless, secular culture. In closing, I wish you and yours a blessed Holy Pascha! + Fr. Phil Christ is risen! Truly He is risen! 4

Frequently Asked Questions about Camp Agape and the Agape Ball What is Camp Agape? Kids n Cancer Camp Agape is a ministry of the Metropolis of SF Philoptochos. Our own St. Irene Philoptochos chapter got involved in a big way eleven years ago when along with the Philoptochos chapters from the other Greek Orthodox Churches in the area we began a camp to minister to Arizona families. The Camp offers a life-changing, all-expense paid camping experience for the families of children afflicted with cancer or other life-threatening diseases. What families? Where do they come from? We do not only offer this service to Orthodox families we extend this loving gift to any family in need. The families are referred to us by local hospital workers as they become aware of families that would benefit. Please tell us if you have a referral. How is the camp funded? Who pays for it? All the costs are paid by funds raised by our local Philoptochos chapters and supplemented by the Metropolis Philoptochos Kids n Cancer Fund. There is no cost to these families who otherwise may be buried with medical debt and emotional burdens. From the bus ride to and from the camp to all the amenities at camp all are provided. It gives the parents a chance to visit and share with other parents who are going through similar crises and it gives the children and siblings a chance to play, swim, relax and experience other camping activities at whatever level they are able. It also provides a chance for the family to be together and relax in an environment away from hospitals and doctors offices. How do we raise the funds? Our one main fund raiser of the year is the Agape Ball with our motto: Give your heart to a child! In addition we encourage individual and corporate donations. If you are unable to attend the Agape Ball we appeal to you to consider donating whatever you feel is appropriate towards the camp. As you can see I think this is a great ministry of our church! Although there is no overt Bible teaching or preaching to these families, many have told us how they have felt God working in their lives through the camp. It is the loving support and encouragement that they receive from the Orthodox Christians serving at the camp that allows God s love to enter their lives. Please be a part of this ministry in whatever way you are able! Do you have more questions? Please feel free to ask. Ask any of the Philoptochos members or call Linda Blazev Give your heart to a child! 6

8 The Holy Orthodox Church is perhaps one of the last social institutions where dignity, protocol, respect, and reverence are maintained. This is primarily because when we come to the Church and its services we are entering the Kingdom of God on earth, His habitation, and we choose to honor this sacred place by our attentiveness to what is proper and ordered. We have the opportunity to reflect the image of Christ within us by our actions. Over the next few months we will try to provide some insights by answering some questions that are frequently asked: Does Lent work the same way? Similar to the Western faith, Lent is a period of time where individuals are supposed to be more conscious of their spiritual character. Many practicing Orthodox Christians fast for 40 calendar days before Easter. Of these 40 days, the week before Easter is a complete fast where no meat, dairy, fish or poultry dishes are prepared or consumed. The Orthodox fasting discipline may be relaxed, if necessary, when one is traveling! Additionally, exceptions should be made when someone is ill or receiving another s hospitality. This is because the focus of Great Lent should not be on outward shows of piety, but rather accepting the love and generosity of others. How does the Orthodox community celebrate Easter with colorful dyed Easter eggs? In the Orthodox tradition, eggs are a symbol of new life. Early Christians used eggs to symbolize the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which thus signifies the rebirth of all believers. The Orthodox custom is to dye Easter eggs a deep red. Toasts are made using the red dyed eggs. Each person selects a red egg and two people toast by saying, Chistos Anesti (Christ has risen). The other replies, Alithos Anesti (Indeed He has risen). This continues until there is only one person left with an egg that has not cracked. The player who successfully cracks the eggs of the other players is declared the winner and, it is said, will have good luck during the year. What is Holy Week like? The Greek-Orthodox Holy Week is a magnificent rollercoaster of sentiment and tradition. Greek- American actress, singer and producer, Rita Wilson, wrote a beautiful piece on her most cherished Easter experiences. She wrote: Holy Week, for a Greek Orthodox, means you clear your calendar, you don t make plans for that week at all because you will be in church every day... It is a powerful, beautiful, mysterious, humbling, healing and moving week. It is filled with tradition and ritual. It is about renewal and faith. Why Do We Dye Eggs Red for Easter? Red Easter eggs are just as much a part of the Greek Orthodox Easter table as some of the other traditional foods, like lamb. They re even baked into the center of tsoureki, the traditional Easter bread. The reason for this is simple, the eggs are a reminder of Christ s resurrection. Dyeing eggs red and using them as a symbol for Christ s resurrection can be traced back to the early days of Christianity in Mesopotamia. They re the first to have dyed the eggs red, which they did as a reminder for the blood Christ shed for us on the cross. In 1610, the Roman Catholic Church published a document called the Roman Ritual, which contained instructions for blessing food at Easter, to including Easter eggs. This tradition continues to this day, especially in countries such as Greece. 8
9 Hronia Polla to all our parishioners and friends who celebrate their name day in February! DATES TO REMEMBER 2018 March 31st: Saturday of Lazarus April 1st: Palm Sunday April 4th: Holy Unction April 6th: Holy Friday April 8th: Holy Pascha April 21st: Agape Ball May 15th: SPIRIT SUBMISSION DEADLINE May 17th: Ascension May 20th: Last Day of Sunday School and Graduation Ceremony May 27th: Pentecost May 28th: Memorial Day-Church Office Closed June 3rd: All Saints June 3rd-9th: All Saints Camp June 7-10th: Camp Agape Rummage Sale Date to be determined Did you know? Traditionally on Holy Friday basil seeds are planted. Basil was first found at the foot of Christ s Cross, and therefore named after the King of Kings. In Greek the plant name is Vasilikos which is derived from Vasilias (meaning King). Our Sunday School Children will be starting this tradition once again after the mid-day service on Holy Friday! Bravo. Do you fast? Give me proof of it by your works. If you see a poor man, take pity on him. If you see a friend being honored, do not envy him. Do not let only your mouth fast, but also the eye, and the feet, and the hands and all the members of our bodies. Let the hands fast, by being free of avarice. Let the feet fast, by ceasing to run after sin. Let the eyes fast, by disciplining them not to glare at that which is sinful. Let the ears by not listening to evil talk and gossip. Let the mouth fast from foul words and unjust criticism. For what good is it if we abstain from birds and fishes, but bite and devour our brothers? 9 - St. John Chrysostom

14 A note from Sunday School.. Sunday School is still under construction. Regarding the school year. I will be meeting with our teachers before the end of the year to finalize our curriculum for the coming school year. We will be sending information concerning the coming school year both to parents and the community Holy Friday, after the midday service, we will be inviting the children and their parents to meet at the Annex (the Sunday School building) to plant Basil. The children will learn the history and tradition Basil symbolizes in our faith. They will take care of the plants and hopefully be able to harvest for Father Phil s use in services throughout the school year. Over the summer, I'm hoping we will be able to complete the needed improvements of the Annex for the new school year. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our amazing volunteer teaching staff. Without their love, commencement and guidance, there would be no Sunday School. Thank you and God bless Fran Attwood Sunday School Director Sunday School Schedule April 1 April 8 April 15 April 22 April 29 May 6 May 13 May 20 PALM SUNDAY No classes PASCHA No classes Sunday school Sunday school Sunday school Sunday school Sunday school End of Year Ceremony and Celebration JOY ages 5-7 /HOPE ages 8-12 All our Saint Katherine Children are invited to our JOY/HOPE group which is held on the first Wednesday of each month September through May from 4:15 to 5:45. 16 Did you know??? Philoptochos is the philanthropic arm of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. We are an army of women following the example of the Lord, who is full of love and compassion, over 25,000 strong nationally, who work to alleviate the suffering of individuals and families across our country and around the globe. In the same way St. Irene Philoptochos is the philanthropic arm of St. Katherines Church. We exist to serve our church and to reach out to those in need in our immediate community. Whether it is paying a medical bill to assist a family with a critically ill child, paying rent or a mortgage so that a family can remain in their home, or sending fresh water to victims of a national disaster. Philoptochos always assists others by the grace of God with love and prayers. In the past couple of months, we have: Hosted a free Spiritual Retreat attended by 70 of our parishioners and with good participation from many from other churches in the valley. Hosted a Day Bus Trip Retreat to visit St. Paisius Monastery with approx. 50 people to spend a day in fellowship and prayer at the Monastery. In addition, because of the good response we were able to donate $500 to the sisters in the monastery. Packed Easter Baskets full of small gifts, warm socks, and sweets for the residents of a local memory care home. Assisted a parishioner with medical bills Donated $1000 towards camperships for St. Katherines kids to be able to go to All Saints Camp this year. Donated $500 to Holy Cross/ Hellenic College (through the generous donations of our parishioners with a special tray passed on Sunday of the Holy Cross.) Donated $500 to International Orthodox Christian Charities Donated $350 towards the Philoptochos Metropolis Emergency Relief Fund. Donated $150 to the Phoenix Rescue Mission In addition, we are preparing in the next few weeks to: Prepare Pascha Dinner Baskets to provide a special holiday meal for families in our community who are in need of a helping hand! (again, through the generous donations of our loving parishioners.) Host a Saturday of Lazarus Palm Cross making event- with Lenten snacks - for all the children and adults in our community that would like to learn to make palm crosses. Host a Palm Sunday fish luncheon for the Parish to provide a time of delicious food and good fellowship for our community. Prepare the Red Eggs for Pascha on Holy Thursday with the help of all our families who would like their children to experience this rich tradition. Participate in the Adornment of the Epitaphios on Holy Friday In addition we are preparing for our Agape Ball fundraiser for our Kids n Cancer Camp Agape Arzona. All the above is the result of the VERY GENEROUS HEARTS AND DONATIONS of the people in our St. Katherine Parish, and the very hard work and dedication of the ladies of St. Irene Philoptochos. The members and board members spend many dedicated and sacrificial hours making these things possible. But I know if you ask any that are involved with St. Irene Philoptochos they will tell you that their participation is a labor of love and that God pours out His blessings on those who help. THANK YOU St. KATHERINE COMMUNITY FOR MAKING ALL THIS POSSIBLE! 16
