MESSAGE FROM FATHER The Why of Christmas In a short few weeks the Christmas season will be upon us. We will be bombarded with the blitz of advertisements by the large retail stores announcing their Christmas and holiday sales. Christmas tree stands will be setup for business at grocery store parking lots. Holiday parties replete with pastries, fine food and other delectables will be planned by offices, friends and families. Christmas lights will adorn our houses, plans for out of state company and family reunions will shortly be determined. And our quest for finding the perfect Christmas present will be in high gear. Christmas is a busy time of year! It is easy to forget the why of Christmas. The Holy Church reminds us that Christmas is about the Nativity of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ. It reveals to us God s mission to enter the realm of human history to rescue man from his estrangement from his creator and his former home, paradise. The Fall of Adam and Eve left them and future mankind isolated from God and with a death sentence. In his distorted, suboptimal condition, man could not improve his spiritual state; He was dying both physically and spiritually. No matter how hard he tried, he was not able to return to the purity of his pre-fall state. He was a hostage to sin. Left to his own cunning, he didn t have a chance. Even with the help of the Ten Commandments, he was not able to live up to the standards. It became self-evident to man that even with the rule-book, he couldn t save himself. He needed help! The life-giving, Holy Trinity, motivated by love, determined to help man. It decided that at the most appropriate moment in human history it would send a rescue mission. The Pre-Eternal word of God (Logos) agreed with the Father and the Holy Spirit to be the person to conduct the mission to enter human history. He would assume flesh from the womb of the most suitable candidates among Jewish girls to become man, not just man but a perfect man. The Holy Spirit would facilitate His human conception. In His human conception, the Logos did not lose His Divinity or see it compromised in any way. In His two natured states, He took on the name of Jesus Christ. His name revealed His noble purpose Jesus means Savior and Christ means Messiah or Anointed One. He would rescue man from his estrangement from God by defeating the power of sin, death and the devil. He would do so by living a sinless life, defeating and binding the power of the devil, and overcoming death by his own third day resurrection. Mankind could participate in His resurrected life by being baptized and through worthy, receiving of the Food of eternal life Holy Communion (the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ). His protective enclosure from the world would be the enclosure of the Holy Orthodox Church and Its spiritual life. When would this happen? The answer to this question is revealed in the Old Testament prophesies. In Daniel 9:24-27, God revealed to the Prophet Daniel that the Messiah would be born to 490 years (70 weeks x 7, each week representing a year) after the Jews would rebuild the Temple after the Babylonian captivity. In Jeremiah 25:11-12, the prophet Jeremiah said the Messiah would be killed (crucified) 490 years after the Persian king Artaxerxes commissioned Ezra to rebuild the Jerusalem temple in 458 B.C.. This would place the Christ s crucifixion at 32 A.D.. This is further collaborated with Mathew 7:17 in which the Apostle Mathew say the Advent of Christ the Messiah would occur 560 years (14 generations x 40 years/ generation=560) after the Jews returned from their captivity in Babylon (approximately 560 B.C.). His birth would then occur at 0 A.D.. Who would His mother be? The Church answers this question in the person of Mary the daughter of Joachim and Anna. Mary was their only child, a gift of fervent prayer, after years of barrenness. She was given the most pious of upbringing with her father being a priest at the Temple and her mother most pious. She would be dedicated to the Temple at age three to the Order of the Virgins to tend to the needs of the Temple. There she would await for the time of God s plan. At the time of the visitation of Archangel Gabriel to her (the Annunciation) she would consent to being the Mother of God, the Theotokos. In the Nativity of Christ, human history is forever altered. Time itself becomes determined by the event of His Nativity. With the celebration of Christmas, man celebrates the birth of hope. It proclaims to us that man s breach with God would be healed. It reveals to us that this holy person s nativity that we celebrate is the God-Man, Jesus Christ. As the Prophet Isaiah said in Isaiah 9:5-6, He is the Emmanuel- the God with us. He is here to embark on the Holy Trinity s rescue mission to save man. In His Person is the greatest gift of all time- God s only begotten son, our Savior. In closing, let us imitate the Wise Men who come to offer Him homage and expensive gift, gifts suitable for He who is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. May we, with the same vigor, seek to find Him in the recesses of our hearts and like the simple shepherds, let us come and offer Him our humble worship. I wish you a blessed Advent fast (November 15 th - De- cember 24 th ). May you and your families focus around the true why of Christmas. Christ is born! Glorify Him! + Father Phil 4

Thoughts from the desk of our president My Dear Brothers & Sisters, from this day forward I challenge every one of you to be the Christian that we are Blessed to be. Let others know us by the way we speak, by the way we act, by the way we love! No excuses! Be a reflection of God s Love There was a sad young man that met Jesus and said: Jesus I cannot take my Cross anymore I feel like giving up. Jesus said: My son, follow me. So the young man followed Jesus, they went into a room where there were thousands upon thousands of Crosses. All of them different. Some metal. Some wood, some gold, some large, some small Jesus said to the young man: Please do not cry anymore for I am here if you cannot take your Cross anymore, put it down & take any Cross you want. The young man was so excited, he searched & searched and then way in the far corner, he saw a tiny little Cross. He said: Lord, this is the Cross I want to have, yes this one. So Jesus smiled, He bent down & picked up the Cross & handed it lovingly to the young man and said: My son, pray and give Glory to the Father, for this is the Cross you already had. 6

Let me wipe your tears and feel your sorrow Let me carry you over the rocky path and set you high on the hill side... For my prayers are yours and your Cross is Always mine... Love Jesus Now my friends, I have twelve words to say: Lord Jesus Christ Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner kyrie eleison kyrie eleison kyrie eleison kyrie eleison kyrie eleison kyrie eleison kyrie eleison kyrie eleison kyrie eleison kyrie eleison kyrie eleison kyrie eleison Κύριε ἐλέησον Κύριε ἐλέησον Κύριε ἐλέησον Κύριε ἐλέησον Κύριε ἐλέησον Κύριε ἐλέησον Κύριε ἐλέησον Κύριε ἐλέησον Κύριε ἐλέησον Κύριε ἐλέησον Κύριε ἐλέησον Κύριε ἐλέησον kyrie eleison kyrie eleison kyrie eleison kyrie eleison kyrie eleison kyrie eleison kyrie eleison kyrie eleison kyrie eleison kyrie eleison kyrie eleison kyrie eleison Be well, Your brother In Christ, Saint Katherine GOC President mr. demetrios j. deliz 7

Highlights of Findings from the Study "Exploring Orthodox Generosity: Giving in US Orthodox Parishes" Based on the national survey of 2,825 Orthodox Church members (lay parishioners) representing all US Orthodox jurisdictions In 2014, a typical (median) Orthodox household gave $2000 to its local parish community in regular giving. That is, half of all Orthodox households gave more than $2000 per year and half of them gave less than that to their parishes. In addition, a typical Orthodox household gave $150 in 2014 to Orthodox organizations or causes (other than their parishes) and $200 to non-orthodox charities, not-forprofits or social causes; Comparing the three main jurisdictions (Greek Orthodox Archdiocese, Antiochian Archdiocese and Orthodox Church in America), members of the Antiochian Archdiocese and Orthodox Church in America made the highest contributions to their parishes. In both of these jurisdictions, an average household gave about $3,000 to a parish in regular contributions in By comparison, an average (median) GOA household contributed $1,500 to a parish in regular giving in 2014; When donations to a parish are measured as a percentage of income, higher income households are less generous than lower-income households. A typical (median) Orthodox household earning between $30,000 and $49,999 gives 3.75% of its income to the parish, whereas households in the $90,000 - $109,999 income category give 2.5%; Converts to Orthodoxy give almost twice as much annually to their churches as cradle Orthodox when measured in actual dollar amounts ($2,800 versus $ 1,500 per average household) and they give more than twice as much when donations are measured as a percentage of a household's income (4.9% versus 2.2%); The tendency to be generous to one's parish is statistically strongly related to being a generous giver to causes and organizations outside of the parish community. That is, parishioners who are more generous contributors to their parishes are also more generous givers to causes outside the parish; 10

2.The degree of involvement with a parish is a very strong predictor of how much people give to their churches. An average household of a person who feels that he/she is "less involved in the parish than majority of parishioners" gives annually about $750 (or about 1% of a household income) to his/her parish, compared to $2000 or 3% of income among those who are "involved similarly to majority of parishioners" and $2465 (or 3.33% of household's income) donated by those who said that they are "more involved in the parish than majority of parishioners;" Personal beliefs and personal theology have a very strong impact on how much a Church member gives to his/her parish. Church members who state that "using the money and material possessions in ways that please God" is part of their spiritual life give on average 2.5 times more to their parish communities than persons who hold the view that "money and material possessions have nothing to do with spiritual and religious issues;" When it comes to the major personal motives to give to the Church, 60% of parishioners give to the Church because this is part of their religious convictions and they believe that "it is what God expects of us." The remaining 40% of church members contribute to their parish communities mainly because of pragmatic reason to pay bills and to take care of the needs of their parish communities; Church members who give to their parishes out of a feeling that they "need to give to the Church" contribute to their parishes much more than those who give in order to simply "address the needs of their parishes and to pay parish's bills;" The culture of giving to the Church because of personal religious convictions and an internal "need to give" is the dominant culture in parishes of the Antiochian Archdiocese and the Orthodox Church in America. In GOA churches, the adherents of a pragmatic approach to giving "I give because my parish has needs" are as vocal as those who give because of religious reasons and an internal "need to give;" Nearly half of converts to Orthodoxy support the concept of tithing (10% of income given to the church) in comparison with less than one-third (30%) of cradle Orthodox who support this idea; US Orthodox parishes use two different approaches when they motivate parishioners to give to the Church. They either ask church members "to give for spiritual reasons" or "to give to address parish's needs." These two approaches are nearly equally common in US Orthodox church life: 53% of respondents said that "When my parish talks about donating money, it talks mostly about people's responsibility to address the needs of the parish," while 47% of study participants reported "When my parish talks about donating money, it talks mostly about vision for the parish's mission, future and opportunities for spiritual growth; Continued next month. 11

DECISIONS, DECISIONS, DECISIONS: EQUIPPING OUR TEENAGERS TO NAVIGATE LIFE Rev. DN. Paul Zaharas Over the past several decades the external pressures and challenges associated with parenting teenagers have been varied. Whether it was the introduction of rock and roll music, the social scourge of the 1950s, or the pervasiveness of today s social networking explosion, parents have faced the challenge of helping their children bridge the chasm that stands between childhood and adulthood. As Christian parents we recognize the importance of raising Godly-minded children, and we must take appropriate steps to help them in their journey toward Him. Society today, through media and peer influence, can convey norms that do not coincide with the teachings of Orthodox Christianity. In fact, oftentimes, the messages that our teen children receive from the world are in direct contradiction to the saving message of Jesus Christ. Experiencing sleepless nights worrying about their children falling into substance use and abuse, sexual promiscuity and perversion, over-connectedness to social media, materialism, and myriad other harmful behaviors, parents at times feel over-whelmed by the challenges of addressing all these issues with their teens. In the Book of Proverbs we read, Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it (22:6). This sounds simple enough, but given the variety of challenges that life throws at our young people, how can parents successfully prepare their teens for every situation? The simple answer is that you can t address each and every possible circumstance that your child will face. We know from our own experience as well that there isn t always someone standing by, watching our every move and steering us clear of mistakes and miscues. What we can offer to our children, however are the tools necessary for them to constructively address challenges on their own. The Church teaches us that each individual is created in the image of God, but what does this really mean? Without venturing into deep theological discussion, we can understand being created in the image of God means that we possess two of His specific attributes: the intellect and free will. First of all, we have intellect, the ability to think. Scientist tell us that humans have the same type of fight or flight instincts that lower animals do; however, we also have the capacity for higher thought in the form of problem-solving and comprehensions. Likewise, God has granted to us free will, the ability to make conscious choices, rather than being subject to mere reflex reactions. With this in mind, the challenge given by the directive found in Proverbs to train up a child in the way he should go is much more attainable. If we are able to teach teens to utilize their God-given intellect and free will to make decisions that are physically and spiritually healthy, we are training them up in the way they should go. This being said, teenagers are notorious for making poor decisions. Certainly this can be attributed to many causes, two of which are that decision-making centers of the brain are not fully developed at this stage in life, and the fact that teenagers are still trying desperately to establish their own identities. For this reason, Christian decision-making is a skill set that needs some instruction and practice. Here are some steps that you can take with your teenager: It is vital to impress on our teens the importance of making quality decisions. They need to be well aware that decisions have consequences, and that consequences have ripples. What this means is that the choices they make generate real results, positive or negative, and those 14

results affect not only the individual, but also those people and things around them. An example that is easy to understand is underage drinking. The decision to illegally drink alcohol can lead to health problems, trouble with the law and at home, and physical harm to oneself or others. Likewise, those consequences spread and affect a teen s parents, family and peers. In a greater sense, sinful behavior separates us from God, and this separation has a negative effect on our relationships with others and our overall wellbeing. Together with your teenager, identify some decisions or conflicts that are applicable to their own lives or to your family. These issues can range from relatively minor items with younger teens such as what to wear to school, to more life-changing matters and moral questions, such as finding an occupation or vocation. Through this exercise children may recognize choices they did not otherwise realize they had. Help your child to carefully consider the options that are presented with each decision. Many times young people fail to look at the possible outcomes of their choices prior to making them. By making a conscious effort to weigh the potential positive and negative results of their actions teens become better equipped in their decision-making process. Clearly, the most important point to remember in developing Christian decisions-making skills is to make Christ the primary factor in every choice. A number of years ago What Would Jesus Do? (WWJD) bracelets were very popular and encouraged wearers to apply that question to their everyday actions. For us as Orthodox Christians, however, a much more basic and important question should be asked: does this particular action lead me closer to or further away from God? Once a teen has considered the options and possible consequences of an action, let him or her make the decision. With your help, your child has used his or her intellect and has become educated about the importance of a choice, and now it is time to exercise free will and make a decision. After the decision has been made and consequences are realized, speak to your teen about the decision he or she made. By offering constructive feedback, you will enable him or her to better understand what has occurred and how to repeat positive and avoid negative outcomes in the future. Ultimately, as members of the Body of Christ, we are called to seek after our Lord and His eternal kingdom. In sharing the Christian faith with our teenage children, we along with the Church, present to them the choice of this path. Enabling them to be good, Christian decisionmakers gives them the opportunity and ability to take steps in this journey. Dn. Paul Zaharas is the Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry for the Metropolis of Denver. He lives in Littleton, CO, with his wife, Celia, and their children Kyriake, Maximos and Titus.
