1 St. Paul Lutheran Church and School Bonduel, Wisconsin February 17, 2016 Midweek Lenten Service Places of the Passion The Upper Room: A Place of Service Gethsemane: A Place of Strength Betrayal: A Place of Eternal Love Courtyard: A Place of Renewal Trial: A Place of God s Will Welcome to the House of the Lord Today we will meditate on the simple words of our Lord s prayer in Gethsemane, Thy will be done. As we listen to Jesus pray, the Holy Spirit brings about a change in our hearts. So often, our prayer is about our will. With this prayer, our eyes are opened to God s will. Rather than struggle to make God part of our lives, we see our Lord struggle because we are a part of His life. His work in this world was for our salvation. When disciples enter into places of sorrow, places where they struggle and fail to carry out God s will, Jesus bears their weakness before His Father. His prayer and labor turn our places of sorrow into the places of God s strength. T T T

Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered. 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. The Passion Reading Luke 22:39 46 And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 And when he came to the place, he said to them, Pray that you may not enter into temptation. 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone s throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done. 43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and

6 his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45 And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, 46 and he said to them, Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation. Have mercy upon us, O Lord. Thanks be to God. Response Deliver me, O Lord, my God, for You are the God of my salvation. Rescue me from my enemies, protect me from those who rise against me. In You, O Lord, do I put my trust, leave me not, O Lord, My God. Lenten Prayer Dear Lord, bring us close to Your cross; teach us to know how You loved us and sacrificed Yourself for us. Lead us to keep Lent in a way that is pleasing to You. As we follow You from the garden to Mount Calvary, do not let us follow afar off, lest we deny You. Open our eyes of faith to see that You knelt in prayer for us, that You, the one without sin, were judged a criminal by unholy men for us, that You suffered the whiplashes of angry sinners, that You stumbled under the cross as our Savior, that You died as the Lamb of God in our place and for our sake. Help us to hear in Your prayer the single purpose for which You endured pain and death: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.

7 Lord, remember us in Your Kingdom, and teach us to pray Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil.
