Willcocks solo Once in royal David s city Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child. full And through all his wondrous childhood He would honour and obey, Love and watch the lowly maiden, In whose gentle arms he lay: Christian children all must be Mild, obedient, good as he. choir He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, And his cradle was a stall; With the poor and mean and lowly Lived on earth our Saviour holy. full And our eyes at last shall see him, Through his own redeeming love, For that child so dear and gentle Is our Lord in Heaven above; And he leads his children on To the place where he is gone. full Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing by, We shall see him, but in heaven, Set at God s right hand on high; When like stars his children crowned, All in white shall wait around. 2

3 BIDDING PRAYER: (remain standing) Beloved in Christ, at this Christmastide let it be our care and delight to hear again the message of the angels, and in heart and mind to go even unto Bethlehem and see this thing which is come to pass, and the Babe lying in a manger. Therefore let us read and mark in Holy Scripture the record of the loving purposes of God from the first days of our disobedience unto the glorious Redemption brought us by this Holy Child. But first, let us pray for the needs of the whole world; for peace on earth and goodwill among all people; for unity and harmony within the Church he came to build, and especially in this our diocese. And because this would rejoice his heart, let us remember, in his name, the poor and helpless, the cold, the hungry, and the oppressed; the sick and them that mourn, the lonely and the unloved, the aged and the little children; all those who know not the Lord Jesus, or who love him not, or who by sin have grieved his heart of love. Lastly, let us remember before God all those who rejoice with us, but upon another shore, and in a greater light, that multitude which no one can number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom in the Lord Jesus we are one for evermore. These prayers and praises let us humbly offer up to the Throne of Heaven, in the words which Christ himself hath taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Please be seated LESSON I Genesis God announces in the Garden of Eden that the seed of woman shall bruise the serpent s head. Read by Claire van Donkelaar, St. John s Youth Choir, 4 pm Laura Fleming, St. John s Youth Choir, 7 pm 3

4 CAROL I wonder as I wander arr. Niles I wonder as I wander, out under the sky, How Jesus the Saviour did come for to die, For poor orn ry people like you and like I When Mary birthed Jesus, twas in a cow s stall, With wise men and farmers and shepherds and all. But high from the heavens a star s light did fall, And the promise of ages it then did recall. If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing, A star in the sky or a bird on the wing, Or all of God s angels in heav n for to sing, He surely could have had it, Cause he was the King. I wonder LESSON II Genesis a God promises to faithful Abraham that in his seed shall the nations of the earth be blessed. Read by Ken Seiling, Chair, Regional Municipality of Waterloo, 4 pm The Hon. Michael Chong, MP Wellington-Halton, 7 pm CAROL A sound of singing fills the air Archer A sound of singing fills the air in praise of all that God has done, who sent, our human life to share, his Son, his own beloved Son; the Prince of life the Father gave, a wayward world to seek and save. Gloria, Gloria in excelsis Deo. He came, the Father s final Word, from that celestial throne above; a child, and yet creation s Lord, to show the human face of love; the love of God to earth come down, who chose the cross before the crown. Gloria The sovereign King of all the earth, and Lord of all the worlds there are he chose as emblem of his birth, a stable and a shining star; within a manger bed to lie, He, whose fingers formed the starry sky. Gloria So life our songs to fill the skies! From manger crib and cattle stall, from cross and grave, behold him rise, the high ascended Lord of all, whose praise the whole creation sings, as Lord of lords and King of kings. Gloria LESSON III Isaiah Christ s birth and kingdom are foretold by Isaiah. Read by Dinah Bristowe, Altar Guild, 4 pm Barbara Gow, Altar Guild, 7 pm 4

5 CAROL The holly and the ivy arr. M. Owens The holly and the ivy when they are both full grown; Of all the trees that are in the wood the holly bears the crown. O the rising of the sun and the running of the deer, The playing of the merry organ, sweet singing in the choir. The holly bears a blossom as white as any flower, And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ to be our sweet Saviour. O the rising The holly bears a berry as red as any blood, And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ to do poor sinners good. O the rising The holly bears a bark as bitter as any gall; And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ for to redeem us all. O the rising HYMN (all stand) See Amid the Winter s Snow See amid the winter s snow, Born for us on earth below; See the tender Lamb appears, Promised from eternal years. 8 LESSON VII Luke The shepherds go to the manger. Read by Nancy Scott, Ladies Group, 4 pm Charlotte Logan, Ladies Group, 7 pm CAROL The shepherds carol Chilcott We stood on the hills, Lady, Our day s work done, Watching the frosted meadows That winter had won. There was a star, Lady, Shone in the night, Larger than Venus it was And bright, so bright. The evening was calm, Lady, The air so still, Silence more lovely than music Folded the hill. Oh, a voice from the sky, Lady, It seemed to us then Telling of God being born In the world of men. And so we have come, Lady, Our day s work done, Our love, our hopes, ourselves, We give to your son. LESSON VIII Matthew The wise men are led by the star to Jesus. Read by Clare Johnston, Quilters and Knitters Group, 4 pm Ann Vaugeois, Altar Guild, 7 pm CAROL Star in the South Polish Folk Who can name that bright flame which the Wise Men saw that night? Was it some God-sent glow, or a splendid star we know? Southward they sallied from Jerusalem: What was the star stood over Bethlehem? Low and high in the sky Many lights amaze the eye: All the days we must praise Him who made the heavens blaze. Yet we believe some radiant stranger Stood in the south above the manger. Star on the hilltop shining like a gem, Are you the star that led to Bethlehem? Star on the hilltop Let us, then, troubled men, humble men and reverent, Seek a spark in the dark, and salute the firmament, For the same light that halted on the hill Brightens the night of all the nations still. 8 Star on the hilltop
