The congregation is requested to keep a prayerful silence before and after the service in accord with Anglican custom. Should circumstances require, the Service may be watched on the TV monitor downstairs in Thompson Hall. ORGAN VOLUNTARY HYMN: (all stand) Once In Royal David s City arr. Willcocks solo Once in royal David s city Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child. full And through all his wondrous childhood He would honour and obey, Love and watch the lowly maiden, In whose gentle arms he lay: Christian children all must be Mild, obedient, good as he. choir He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, And his cradle was a stall; With the poor and mean and lowly Lived on earth our Saviour holy. full And our eyes at last shall see him, Through his own redeeming love, For that child so dear and gentle Is our Lord in Heaven above; And he leads his children on To the place where he is gone. full Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing by, We shall see him, but in heaven, Set at God s right hand on high; When like stars his children crowned, All in white shall wait around. 2

BIDDING PRAYER: (remain standing) Beloved in Christ, at this Christmastide let it be our care and delight to hear again the message of the angels, and in heart and mind to go even unto Bethlehem and see this thing which is come to pass, and the Babe lying in a manger. Therefore let us read and mark in Holy Scripture the record of the loving purposes of God from the first days of our disobedience unto the glorious Redemption brought us by this Holy Child. But first, let us pray for the needs of the whole world; for peace on earth and goodwill among all people; for unity and harmony within the Church he came to build, and especially in this our diocese. And because this would rejoice his heart, let us remember, in his name, the poor and helpless, the cold, the hungry, and the oppressed; the sick and them that mourn, the lonely and the unloved, the aged and the little children; all those who know not the Lord Jesus, or who love him not, or who by sin have grieved his heart of love. Lastly, let us remember before God all those who rejoice with us, but upon another shore, and in a greater light, that multitude which no one can number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom in the Lord Jesus we are one for evermore. These prayers and praises let us humbly offer up to the Throne of Heaven, in the words which Christ himself hath taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Please be seated LESSON I Genesis God announces in the Garden of Eden that the seed of woman shall bruise the serpent s head. Read by Heather Vines, St. John s Kilmarnock School, 4 pm Elsa Patterson, St. John s Sunday School, 7 pm 3

CAROL Sans Day Carol Rutter Now the holly bears a berry as white as the milk, And Mary bore Jesus, who was wrapped up in silk: And Mary bore Jesus Christ our Saviour for to be, And the first tree in the greenwood, it was the holly! Now the holly bears a berry as green as the grass, And Mary bore Jesus, who died on the cross: And Mary Now the holly bears a berry as black as the coal, And Mary bore Jesus, who died for us all: And Mary Now the holly bears a berry, as blood is it red, Then trust we our Saviour, who rose from the dead; And Mary LESSON II Genesis a God promises to faithful Abraham that in his seed shall the nations of the earth be blessed. Read by Michael van Donkelaar, St. John s Sunday School, 4 pm Damaris Martin, St. John s Sunday School, 7 pm CAROL Twas in the winter cold Barnby Twas in the winter cold, when earth Was desolate and wild, That Angels welcomed at His Birth The everlasting Child. From realms of ever bright ning day, And from His throne above He came, with human kind to stay, All lowliness and love. But I have not, it makes me sigh, One offering in my power; Tis winter all with me, and I Have neither fruit nor flower. O God, O Brother let me give, My worthless self to Thee; And that the years which I may live May pure and spotless be: Then in the manger the poor beast Was present with his Lord; Then swains and pilgrims from the East Saw, wondered, and adored. And I this morn would come with them This blessed sight to see, And to the Babe of Bethlehem Bend low the reverent knee. Light of the everlasting morn, Deep through my spirit shine; There let Thy presence newly born Make all my being Thine: There try me as the silver, try, And cleanse my soul with care, Till Thou art able to descry Thy faultless image there. 4

LESSON III Isaiah Christ s birth and kingdom are foretold by Isaiah. Read by Chris van Donkelaar, St. John s Sunday School, 4 pm Norman Morris, St. John s Men s Club, 7 pm CAROL There is no rose Cusworth There is no rose of such virtue As is the rose that bare Jesu; Alleluia. For in this rose contained was Heaven and earth in little space; Res miranda. By that rose we may well see That he is God in persons three, Pari forma. The angels sungen the shepherds to: Gloria in excelsis deo: Gaudeamus. Leave we all this worldly mirth, And follow we this joyful birth; Transeamus. HYMN (all stand) See Amid the Winter s Snow See amid the winter s snow, Say, ye holy shepherds, say Born for us on earth below; What your joyful news to-day; See the tender Lamb appears, Wherefore have ye left your sheep Promised from eternal years. On the lonely mountain steep? Goss Lo, within a manger lies He who built the starry skies; He who throned in height sublime Sits amid the cherubim! As we watched at dead of night, Lo, we saw a wondrous light; Angels singing Peace on earth Told us of the Saviour s birth. Please be seated LESSON IV: John John the Baptist announces the coming of the Lord Read by Nancy Scott, St. John s Ladies Group, 4 pm Peter Scott, Portage Ministry, 7 pm 5

CAROL Ding dong merrily on high Williamson Ding dong! Merrily on high, In heav'n the bells are ringing: Ding dong! Verily the sky Is riv'n with angel singing, Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis! E'en so here below, below, Let steeple bells be swungen, And "Io, io, io!" By priest and people sungen. Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis! Pray you, dutifully prime Your matin chime, ye ringers; May you beautifully rime Your evetime song, ye singers. Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis! LESSON V Luke The Angel Gabriel salutes the Blessed Virgin Mary. Read by Clare Johnston, Quilters and Knitters Group, 4 pm Emily Petrenko, Volunteer and Youth Choirs Director, 7 pm CAROL O Little Town of Bethlehem arr. Davies Recit: For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Saviour who is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in. O holy child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin and enter in; be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us; abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel! LESSON VI Matthew St. Matthew tells of the birth of Christ. Read by Ken Seiling, Chair Regional Municipality of Waterloo, 4 pm Jurgen Petrenko, Organist, 7 pm 6

CAROL In the bleak mid winter arr. Allain In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter, long ago. Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain; heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign. In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed the Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ. Angels and archangels may have gathered there, cherubim and seraphim thronged the air; but his mother only, in her maiden bliss, worshiped the beloved with a kiss. What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; if I were a Wise Man, I would do my part; yet what I can I give him: give my heart. OFFERTORY HYMN (all stand) Of the Father s Love Begotten arr. Willan (suggested minimum offering $15) Of the Father s love begotten Ere the worlds began to be, He is Alpha and Omega, He the Source, the Ending he, Of the things that are, that have been, And that future years shall see, Evermore and evermore. Oh that birth forever blessèd! When the Virgin, full of grace, By the Holy Ghost conceiving, Bare the Saviour of our race, And the Babe, the world s Redeemer, First revealed his sacred face, Evermore and evermore. O ye heights of heaven, adore him; Angel-hosts, his praises sing; All dominions, bow before him, And extol our God and King; Let no tongue on earth be silent, Every voice in concert ring, Evermore and evermore. Christ, to thee, with God the Father, And, O Holy Ghost, to thee, Hymn, and chant, and high thanksgiving, And unwearied praises be, Honour, glory, and dominion, And eternal victory, Evermore and evermore. Please be seated LESSON VII Luke The shepherds go to the manger. Read by Jeff Ostic, Chair Elora Festival, 4 pm Noel Edison, Director Parish Choir, 7 pm 7

CAROL All bells in paradise Rutter Deep in the cold of winter, Darkness and silence were everywhere; Softly and clearly, there came through the stillness a wonderful sound to hear: All bells in paradise I heard them ring, Sounding in majesty the news that they bring; All bells in paradise I heard them ring, Welcoming our Saviour, born on earth a heavenly King. All bells in paradise I heard them ring: Glory to God on high the angel voices sing. Lost in awe and wonder, Doubting I asked what this sign might be: Christ our Messiah revealed in a stable, A marvellous sight to see. All bells in paradise He comes down in peace, a child in humility, The keys to his kingdom belong to the poor; Before him shall kneel the kings with their treasures, gold incense and myrrh. All bells in paradise LESSON VIII Matthew The wise men are led by the star to Jesus. Read by the Hon. Michael Chong, MP Wellington-Halton, 4 pm Jean Innes, Councillor Centre Wellington, 7 pm CAROL King Jesus hath a garden arr. Wood King Jesus hath a garden full of divers flow rs, Where I go culling posies gay, all times and hours. There naught is heard but paradise bird, Harp, dulcimer, lute, With cymbal, trump and tymbal, And the tender soothing flute The lily, white in blossom there is chastity: The violet with sweet perfume, humility. There naught The crown imperial bloometh too in yonder place, Tis charity, of stock divine, the flow r of grace. There naught Yet, mid the brave, the bravest prize of all may claim The Star of Bethlem Jesus Blessed be his Name!... There naught Ah! Jesu Lord, my heal and weal, my bliss complete, Make thou my heart thy garden plot, fair, trim and neat. 8 That I may hear this musick clear: Harp, dulcimer, lute, With cymbal, trump and tymbal, And the tender soothing flute.

Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear the Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia! Priest The Lord be with you. People And with thy spirit. Priest Let us pray. CHRISTMAS COLLECT Almighty God, who hast given us thy only-begotten Son to take our nature upon him, and as at this time to be born of a pure Virgin: Grant that we being regenerate, and made thy children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by thy Holy Spirit; through the same our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the same Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen. BLESSING 9

Thought for Advent IV Living without mystery means being ignorant of the mystery of our own life, of the mystery of other people, of the mystery of the world. It means passing over our own hiddenness, the hiddenness of other people and the world. It means either failing to see or even denying the decisive matter of life. It means being superficial. That is something that we do not want to know. We do not want to be told that mystery is the root of all that can be understood and revealed and explained. And if we are told this, we want to quantify this mystery, calculate and explain it, dissect it. And the result is that we kill and do not discover the mystery (Bonhoeffer).
