3 Living a Covenant Life: Lenten Practice Leading to Life Praxis Over the course of our Lenten time in 2012, we will be looking at the idea of Covenant Relationships. In our Sunday lessons we will encounter many of the covenants made between God and humanity, all of which resound with the greatest covenant of all: I shall be your God and you shall be my people, says Yahweh. As we create a frontal with the signs and symbols of the scriptural covenants of God, we will also look at how we worship as the body of Christ. We are in hopes of honoring various strands of our Transfiguration community through liturgy and music. Lent 1 we will focus on the African American community; Lent 2 the Jamaican/Islander community; Lent 3 the African community; Lent 4 will honor the European community; and Lent 5 will return us to our 1979 Book of Common Prayer. The hope is that we can explore some of the liturgies and music preferences among all of us and covenant to honor each other and our cultures even though most of the time we follow the rubrics of The Episcopal Church. To that end, it is our hope that if you have a particular song or dance or musical gift to accompany a given Sunday that you will let either Meg or Rondesia know by February 12 so that we can follow up as much as possible to include it in the liturgy for the particular given week. ON THURSDAYS, we will join together as a body of Christ in the Community Building. We will begin our time together with Food and Fellowship. The request has been made that we reprise last year s gatherings by celebrating the diversity of tastes we have among our parishioners. So, we will do so, knowing that each week s offerings will be fabulous. Following a meal together, we will have a 30-minute program in which we look at our own lives and the things we need to take into account in order to live the best life we can live for the sake of Yahweh and our families and for ourselves. At the end of that time together, anyone who wants to may join in a rehearsal for a Palm Sunday cantata. We hope all the choir will join in, but we also hope and pray that those of you who do not usually sing with the choir but would enjoy a one-time offering of your vocal abilities would join in with us to learn the music to Who Do You Say that I Am? If you can read and sing, then you are invited to join in the preparation for this Palm Sunday event. 5 From Transfiguration s Health Ministry... PAGE 5 Proverbs 4:23 Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. We must guard our hearts not just emotionally, and spiritually, but physically as well. That means taking good care of it. At best, a good working heart allows us to think, breath, sleep, and move better by pumping our blood in an efficient manner. An unhealthy heart affects all of these things reducing our quality of life dramatically, leaving our other organs vulnerable and increasing the chances of other problems including strokes. Did you know that your heart is an incredibly hard-working muscle. The heart pumps about 2,000 gallons of blood as it contracts and expands about 100,000 times per day which is why keeping it healthy is so important. Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women in the United States claiming the lives of more than 600,000 people each year, half of them women. Why? Often women s symptoms present differently than men when it comes to heart disease. Therefore, many women go undiagnosed making the condition harder to detect. According to a recent article by Dr. Mehmet Oz By midlife (ages 40 to 60) almost one third of women have two or more modifiable risk factors obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol quadrupling their risk of developing heart disease. So how can you improve your heart health? Eat a healthy diet, take a 30 minute walk every day, and reduce stress. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has launched Make the Call: Don t Miss a Beat Campaign to raise awareness about the need to call 911 if you suffer any of these symptoms: chest pain, cold sweats, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, fatigue, or upper body pain. For more info call or visit Eating heart healthy foods is essential to guarding our heart. Here are a few strategies to getting started on your way: 1. Limit unhealthy fats and cholesterol Try substituting Olive oil and Canola oil for butter, lard, or bacon fats. 2. Choose low-fat protein sources Replace full-fat milk with skim or low-fat milk, or try other low-fat dairy products such as yogurt and unprocessed cheese. Eat more fish, especially fatty, cold-water fish such as salmon. Yes, there are healthy fats. 3. Eat more vegetables and fruits They are good sources of vitamins and minerals; they are also low in calories and rich in dietary fiber. Vegetables and fruits also contain substances found in plants that may help prevent cardiovascular disease. Try keeping fruit on your counter and the chips in the pantry out of sight. Contributed by Gina McBean-Linton Continued on next page

6 4. Select whole grains Try brown rice and barley or whole grain pasta and whole grain breads. 5. Reduce the sodium in your food Choose more herbs and spices to flavor your food instead of salt. Use reduced-salt versions of various prepared and canned foods. 6. Control your portion size A serving of meat, fish, or chicken is 2 to 3 ounces, or about the thickness of a deck of cards. 7. Plan ahead: Create daily menus Variety makes your meals and snacks more interesting. And, planning prevents a last minute drive through at the local fast food joint. 8. Allow yourself an occasional treat Life is all about balance. Let s start taking care of our hearts today! 8 Diocesan Convention 2012 PAGE 8 It became very clear from our first moments at convention that this is to be a new era in churchmanship in the Diocese of Washington. The convention opened within the framework of the Eucharist; each movement within the convention segued between the temporal business of the church and the spiritual business. The pre-convention teaching was led by our new bishop herself, The Rt. Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde. In the teaching she talked about people coming to our churches searching for meaning initially and then looking for community. She said that very often instead of bringing people in and initiating them into our churches and making them feel comfortable and helping them to understand how and why we do the things we do, we short circuit the process and try to make them leaders before they are ready or ask them to be part of the core discipleship before they really know who they are and who the church is and how that all fits together. She suggests we raise the bar for membership by having inquirers classes that help our newcomers become grounded in who we are as a church. She also talked with us about what it takes to effect change, or transformation, in the church. She particularly likes the word transformation over change because change indicates a loss of the past whereas transformation indicates a building on the past to become that which is new. In her address to convention she talked a great deal about the how she plans to spend her time in the diocese. While she must make provision for the cathedral and its search for a new dean, she plans to make parishes her number one priority. She is convinced that in a diocese, indeed in a church in which we are declining in numbers or at best holding our own we are poised for an Episcopal moment when we can transform our church to be a church that can reach out and minister to those in need, to those who come, to those with specific ministry interests. She says that we are poised to become public, destination churches. There is a lot to unpack there, and I am sure her message will be available to us in full. She also plans to make staffing decisions and to use the resources at hand to help along our transformative Episcopal Moment. Resolutions were discussed and voted on Saturday after a wonderful group exercise that dealt with the parishes and the perception of them in their local communities. Of note were resolutions on the Palestinian/Israeli conflict and on endorsing statehood for the District of Columbia. The convention ended with Eucharist. We give thanks for Bill Freeman, Anthony Moore, and JJ Boulin who represented our congregation as well our clergy. Bill Freeman was presented and thanked as part of the Transition Team, and Rondesia read the gospel in Spanish for the service. Please ask your representative any questions you may have about convention. Our Diocesan Delegates: Bill Freeman Anthony Moore J.J. Boulin (Alternate)

9 PAGE 9 Great News for Altar Flowers Dear Transfigurationers, We have been given a wonderful offer for the floral arrangements that adorn our altar on Sundays, and it will cost us only a little space and a little ink in our Sunday programs. A local florist has offered to provide our flowers for an acknowledgement of his services in our weekly bulletin. Considering our substantial budgetary shortcomings, we feel that we must give it a try. Now, you are wondering, What about the Hyacinth Fund and the special donations that we give in the Altar Flowers envelopes? Fear not. We will continue to seek and accept those offerings. If you were able to attend the Annual Meeting, then you heard about the fiscal constraints affecting our Parish. Truly, we need all the help that we can get. The Altar Guild s resources are severely limited. If you can continue to donate to what were the flower funds, then we can channel those donations to the purchase of necessary items such as communion hosts, sacramental wine, memorial candles, liquid paraffin for all our other candles, and more. We see this opportunity as a gift from God. We thank you for supporting us in the past; and we pray that you will be able to continue that support in the weeks and months to come. Peace and love, Karen Facen, Altar Guild Director
