2 Our Mission Welcome to The Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion, a welcoming and diverse community seeking to walk in the way of Jesus and to reveal Christ s reconciling love in our city, nation, and world. Can I receive Communion? Yes. Whoever you are, wherever you find yourself on the journey of faith, you are welcome to receive the bread and wine made holy. Are children welcome? We like to say we expect everyone to act their age. Acting your age as a little one can mean restlessness in worship. Wiggles and giggles are welcome too! Children learn by watching adults worship. There are coloring sheets and quiet books at the back of the church. Our chapel is a sound-proof place to bring a crying infant, or a boisterous toddler, with windows into the church and speakers broadcasting the sound from the service. Ask an usher if you need any assistance. Children are invited to children s chapel after the Gospel until the Peace. How do I find my way around? There is a map by the Welcome Table in the main entryway (on the East side of the church). Also, feel free to ask anyone around you for directions, or help navigating the service. Where are the restrooms? There are single-user, all-gender restrooms in the Lounge, through the main (East) door, and through the next glass door. There are gendered, larger restrooms downstairs (take the elevator or stairs at the end of the long hallway in front of that entrance). Changing tables are available in the downstairs restrooms or in the nursery. Is there wheelchair accessibility? Yes. Our entrances have auto-open buttons, and our elevator is ADA compliant. Both the downstairs restrooms and one of the upstairs restrooms are accessible. Everyone is invited to remain seated during the service as they need. What about hearing assistance? We can help there, too. Hearing assistance devices are available from the ushers. Just ask. How do I get involved? If you begin by filling out a Connect Card in your pew, or at the Welcome Table, we d be glad to keep you up to date with all that goes on here. You can also use the Connect Cards to update your information, request prayers, or to ask a question. Become a member. All are welcome to be here and to explore. 5 1st Lesson Please be seated Isaiah 6:1-8 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory. The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts! Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out. Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? And I said, Here am I; send me! The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 29 All sing the refrain after the choir, and where indicated. Ascribe to the Lord, you gods, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Refrain. 2nd Lesson Romans 8:12-17 So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh-- for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, "Abba! Father!" it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ-- if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. 7 The Holy Gospel Please stand John 3:1-17 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ. There was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God. Jesus answered him, Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above. Nicodemus said to him, How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother s womb and be born? Jesus answered, Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, You must be born from above. The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus said to him, How can these things be? Jesus answered him, Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. The Gospel of our Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Children are invited to follow the crucifer to the front of the church and then make their way across the hall and into the lounge for Children s Chapel. 8 The Nicene Creed Please stand as we recite a modern translation of the ancient formula for faith. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. We pray for our president, the members of Congress, the Supreme Court, our governor, and for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world. 11 The presider offers thanks to God for the grace and mercy made available to us in Christ. In response all sing: Sanctus Please stand LEVAS 253 The presider gives thanks to God for Christ s redeeming work, and remembers Jesus last supper with his disciples. The people are invited to respond to the words: Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The presider concludes with prayer for the Holy Spirit to sanctify the bread and wine, and the gathered congregation. The Eucharistic prayer concludes with a plea for the coming of God s reign. 11

The Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. On the left (West) side of the altar rail, the chalice is filled with white grape juice, as a sign of welcome for those who choose not to consume wine. On the right (East) side of the altar rail, the chalice is traditional red wine. Please feel free to cross the aisle for your preferred chalice. 15 Announcements Adult Forum and Godly Play: Summer recess starts on June 3. Next Sunday: If you are sensitive to loud noises, you may want to bring noise cancelling headphones for next Sunday. The volume is expected to be louder than a typical Sunday. Earplugs will be provided before the service. Deaconess Anne House Memorial Day Cookout Monday May 28 at 6:15pm. Feast of the Holy Communion: June 3 at 10:30am-We will be celebrating our life as a congregation, our mission vision, and goals. We ll have a procession through the streets with bagpipes, a festival service, and we'll end with a cookout lunch and party in Mooney Park in thanksgiving for the hard work of our many volunteers. Come celebrate! Theology on Tap: On Wednesday June 6, 2018 our topic is Faith, LGBTQ+ Pride, and the Power of Pronouns with The Rev. Mike Angell. Join us at Dressel s Pub in the Central West End at 419 N Euclid Ave at 6:30pm. Interfaith Worship at Pridefest: On Sunday June 24, the rector has declared that our principle service will be downtown. Holy Communion is joining with other congregations of many faiths in celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride. We will gather at the main stage of the Pride Festival at 10am. Interfaith Choir at Pridefest: Holy Communion and Metropolitan Community Church of Greater St Louis (MCCGSL) are organizing a choir to lead the music worship at the Interfaith Service at this year's PRIDE Festival on June 24th. This will be a great way to get to know our fellow musicians in St. Louis, and also to embody the belief of interfaith worship. Rehearsals will be held at 7pm on June 7th and 21st at Metropolitan Community Church in Soulard. If you are interested in singing with us, please let Mary Chapman know (mchapman@holycommunion.net).you don't need to be a current member of the choir to participate. New Diversity Altar Frontal: This summer, in collaboration with Jeff Wunrow, a local Episcopalian liturgical artist, you are invited to donate a piece of fabric, at least 8 inches by 8 inches in diameter that will be incorporated in a new green frontal. Bring in pieces of fabric and/or weaving that represent the diverse cultures and heritages of Holy Communion. We will turn all of the gathered fabric and weaving to Jeff on July 22, and we hope to bless the new frontal as part of our homecoming celebration in mid-september. 15

16 Liturgical Changes For Pentecost 1. Red frontal color and matching vestments. Red is the color of the Holy Spirit. The altar frontal, the newest in Holy Communion s collection includes tongues of flame from Pentecost. For the two Sundays following Pentecost, we're keeping this beautiful frontal up, to remind us of the Spirit's role in empowering the church 2. Syrian Alleluia. This setting of the alleluia was taught at the World Council of Churches by the metropolitan of the Syrian Orthodox Church. Bishop Gregorious was kidnapped in He and other Syrian orthodox colleagues are still missing. Please pray for the peace of Syria. 3. Procession out of church. The whole congregation makes their way out with the choir singing Every Time I Feel the Spirit, a reminder that the church is called to follow Christ, to follow the Holy Spirit out into the world. 4. Trinity Icon. Under the pulpit you will see a new icon, commissioned by the Rev. Mark Bozutti-Jones, an Episcopal priest, from Missouri Iconographer Kelly Latimore. The icon subverts the traditional icon of the Trinity written by Rublev. You'll notice in the place of male angels, women of various races. In what other ways does the icon play with our conception of the divine? When we proclaim a principle in our public witness, it is important to practice it personally. Along with the Diocese of Missouri we ask all gun owners: Please ensure that all guns in your home are locked and secured against use by children or those suffering agonizing despair. 16
