2 Welcome To our Triduum celebration! We gather here to celebrate the Three Great Days of our liturgical year. In the midst of our busy lives and schedules, we need these days, rituals, and prayers to remind us of who we are, what we are about, and where we are going. This is the time when we recall most succinctly how our lives are a part of the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Here we will remember what it means when we proclaim every Mass, Save Us, Savior of the World, for by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free! We welcome in a special way those who are visiting us. Together we gather in a spirit of deep prayer. And every time we pray together, we are changed. Open your heart to God s Spirit calling you to a new life during these days together. Remember that these three days are one celebration. Take time out of your schedule and stay with the Lord in prayer, just as the apostles did in the garden with Jesus. May these days of prayer give you a new vision of your significant place in our journey with Christ. The new Jerusalem is our destiny. May the blessed and new life of Christ s Resurrection fill your heart with God s Holy Spirit! God bless you, Fr. Jim Deiters Pastor Praying The Triduum Hungry now and excited, the church gathers in the darkness and lights a new fire and a great candle that will make this night bright for us. We listen to some of the most powerful scriptures in the Bible, then we pray to all our saints to stand with us as we go the font and bless the waters. Here the catechumens are baptized and anointed. These are the moments when death and life meet, when we reject evil and give our promises to God. Together we go the altar and celebrate the Easter eucharist. Easter Sunday begins and we are ready for Fifty Days of rejoicing! easter communion gerard manley hopkins ( ) Pure fasted faces draw unto this feast: God comes all sweetness to your Lenten lips. You striped in secret with breath-taking whips, Those crooked rough-scored chequers may be pieced To crosses meant for Jesus; you whom the East With draught of thin and pursuant cold so nips Breathe Easter now; you serged fellowships, You vigil-keepers with low ames decreased, God shall o er-brim the measures you have spent With oil of gladness, for sackcloth and frieze And the ever-fretting shirt of punishment Give myrrhy-threaded golden folds of ease. 4 Prelude holy ThurSday evening mass of The lord S SuPPer le banquet céleste Olivier Messiaen ( ) lord S Prayer Sign of Peace communion rite lamb of god mass of WiSdom Steve Janco Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Olivier Messiaen was one of the most prominent French composers of the 20th century. Le banque céleste was composed in 1928 while Messiaen was studying at the Paris Conservatory. Messiaen was a devout Catholic and based much of his music on scripture passages and religious ideas, as noted above. The unique and sustained chords creates a very ethereal mood that remains throughout the piece. The pedal enters after few minutes in a very unusual way, playing staccato (short) notes like drops of water as Messiaen indicates. Scholars believe that this signifies drops of Christ s blood falling from the cross. The very slow tempo and overall ambiguity of the piece suggest that to God, time is not as we perceive it. The piece ends on an unresolved chord, symbolizing that the celestial banquet, the Eucharist, is eternal. These three days are the holiest in our liturgical calendar; in fact, to set them apart even more, the Church designates these three days as its own liturgical season. After listening to the scriptures, we do something strange: we wash feet. The priest goes down on his knees with a pitcher of water, basin, and towels. Jesus gave us this image of what the church is supposed to look life, feel like, act like. We hear the choir sing the Mandatum (commandment) text, which the Church appropriately prescribes for this time in the liturgy. The act of washing feet is a rehearsal for the Christian life, as is the next thing we do the Collection on Holy Thursday is traditionally an offering for the poor. As we do at every Mass, we celebrate the Liturgy of the Eucharist, but tonight we have an opportunity to feel a deeper connection as we commemorate Christ instituting the Eucharist at the last supper. This evening s liturgy has no ending. Rather, the Triduum is viewed as one continuous liturgy or time of prayer. Strive to make these next days prayerful, so you can feel the presence of the sacred mysteries we re celebrating even at home, work, and school. Whether we stay to pray awhile before the Blessed Sacrament or leave, we are now in the quiet and peace and glory of the Triduum. Second reading genesis 22:1-18 The sacrfice of Abraham our father in faith. responsorial PSalm PSalm 16 John Schiavone/Joseph Gelineau, SJ 18 11
12 ProceSSion collect good friday celebration of The PaSSion of The lord Please stand as the procession enters in silence. All kneel when the presider lies prostrate at the foot of the sanctuary. We give ThankS for The Work of The bees Written by Martin Marklin of Marklin Candle Design, the maker of our Paschal Candle Each year as the sun sets on the eve of the first Sunday after the vernal equinox, Christians around the world gather to light and bless a fire. The flame from that fire ignites a candle the Paschal Candle which then leads a procession into a darkened church. From that single candle, all who gather light individual candles. Standing next to this pillar of fire, the deacon, priest, or lay minister, sings the great Easter Proclamation, the Exultet. This ancient hymn recounts God s saving hand throughout history. It celebrates that night when Christ broke the chains of death and rose triumphantly from the grave. i: liturgy of The Word Readings can be found in the back of the hymnal at #1043 first reading Isaiah 52:13-53:12 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried. responsorial PSalm PSalm 31 Ephrem Feely 1. In you, O Lord, I take refuge. Let me never be put to shame. In your justice, set me free. You will redeem me, O Lord, O faithful God. 2. Because of all my foes I have become a reproach, an object of scorn to my neighbors and of fear to my friends. 3. Those who see me in the street flee from me. I am forgotten, like someone dead, and have become like a broken vessel. 4. But as for me, I trust in you, O Lord; I say, You are my God. My lot is in your hands, deliver me from the hands of my enemies and those who pursue me. 5. Let your face shine on your servant. Save me in your merciful love. Be strong, let your heart take courage, all who hope in the Lord. Second reading Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:7-9 Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. homily 12 Fr. Jim Deiters Lighting a candle to mark significant and life changing moments, however, is not unique to the Easter Vigil. Think for a moment of the times when we light candles. We mark the beginning and passing of life by lighting candles on birthdays and at funerals. Flowers and candles immediately mark the site where lives were lost due to a tragedy. Peace marches are held at night in candlelight. The Olympics begin with a flame that has been carried across the globe. And in our homes, candles add warmth and romance to dinners with our beloved. This inextricable bond between candles and the need to mark life s moments transcends nationality, race, and culture. It is an expression of what it means to be human and alive. It has been said that a candle not lighted is dead. We light candles, in fact, to have light. And it is for the sake of the flame that a candle exists. As such, a candle is the very symbol of a sacrifice wax consumed to produce light. How appropriate, then, that a candle should remind us of Christ, who gave his life that we might have eternal light. The final passages of the Exultet extol the virtues of the Paschal Candle, and more significantly, the creatures who labor to make it. Speak to any beekeeper, and you will quickly learn of the virtues of the honeybee. Beeswax is an organic product, produced by the honeybee, and is relatively little known compared to the other gift honey which gives this creature its very name. A colony may have as many as 60,000 bees and yield hundreds of pounds of honey in a season. Yes, this same number of bees will produce only a pound or two of wax during the same time. Only the worker (virgin) produces wax for approximately eight days in her life. She secretes waxy flakes from glands on her abdomen, which become beeswax when chewed and expectorated. The workers will use this wax to create a hexagonal cell structure, called the comb, which will serve as the hive s nursery and pantry. Into each hexagonal cell, a queen will lay an egg or a nurse bee will store nectar (its carbohydrate) or pollen (its protein). The bees build each cell at precisely 5.2 mm in diameter and work entirely in the dark. In the 4th century, St. John Chrysostom wrote, The bee is more honored than other animals, not because she labors, but because she labors for others. While some native bees are solitary, the honeybee (apis mellifera) is not. It survives only in a colony. It is the role-model of communal living. Tasks are undertaken by all, food is held in common, and the survival of the colony supersedes any individual s interest. The female bee loses her life if she stings another out of defense. During the winter months, bees do not hibernate. Rather, they cluster around the queen and thermo-regulate the temperature of the colony. A bee will not survive apart from the cluster. Since ancient times, the honeybee has been an iconic symbol of industriousness. The phrase, busy as a bee refers to the fact that the bee never sleeps. During the summer months, a bee lives for only about six weeks. The first half of her life is spent in the hive, attending to the queen, nursing the brood, and building comb. It is only in the second half of her life that she will forage, seeking nearby flora for nectar and pollen. She uses the sun as her GPS and can travel several miles from her hive seeking food. Worker bees communicate the location of food stores by a special dance performed in the hive. This sophisticated dance, called a waggle dance, relays both the direction and the distance from the hive. The scientific community refers to this behavior as evangelization. Why not be the bee seeking that which is beautiful in the world, transforming it in our own lives, and giving back to the community something even more precious. 17

Please leave this booklet on the table in the gathering space. Lauds (Morning Prayer) tomorrow at 8:00am Praying the Paschal Triduum Verse: Christ became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every other name. PaSSion gospel John 18:1-19:42 The Solemn intercessions We continue celebrating the Paschal Triduum with the solemn celebration of the Lord s Passion. We gather in silence, continuing our prayer from yesterday. The procession enters the church in silence, and the priest lies prostrate at the foot of the sanctuary a powerful image. The first major part of this service is the powerful text proclaimed from Isaiah. Today, we hear the Passion according to St. John. We pray at length for all the world s needs in the Solemn Intercessions. Similar to last evening s once-a-year ritual of the washing of the feet, tonight we venerate the cross. The holy cross is held up in our midst and we come forward one by one to do reverence with a kiss, bow, or genuflection. The church environment is barren for this liturgy. Likewise, the music for this service is very solemn and simple. We continue in fasting, prayer and vigil, in rest and quiet through Saturday. All kneel in silent prayer before each intercession. I.
