This is a handy tool to have and use to not only find parishioners addresses and phone numbers but to also see what is offered in our community. We continue to be a strong faith community. St. Clement has a rich history of a Catholic presence in the West side of Toledo. From the beginnings in the old Fire House on Secor Road to our present facility this area has been well served by this Catholic community. Over a long history many priestly and religious vocations have come from this community. At the present time Mr. Craig Irwin is studying for the priesthood in the Oblate Community here in Toledo. Please pray for Craig that the Lord will guide him as he continues his journey to the priesthood. St. Clement continues to move in a positive direction with new parishioners, greater attendance at Mass, a strong Religious Education Program and an RCIA process that continues to bring new members to our faith community. This directory will provide you with a list of all the ministries that are available here. I would ask you to read through this booklet, see what we have to offer and become involved in the ministry of our parish. We are always looking for new members for all of the ministries here in the parish. Let us together continue to build our community of faith. I encourage you to use this directory to become familiar with what we have to offer. God bless. Sincerely, Reverend Francis J. Speier Pastor 1

Pat Flaminio Betty Pelton Short History of St. Clement St. Clement Parish was decreed ST. CLEMENT (PONTIFF & MARTYR) by Bishop Karl J. Alter on July 1, Clement I, pope from 88 to 97 and martyr was among the first of the Apostolic Fathers. He was a freedman of the imperial household, the son of Faustinianus and Macidania, and the successor as pope to Cletus (r ). His successes irritated Emperor Trajan (r ), who condemned him to the mines of the Crimea, Ukraine. Clement opened up a spring in the mines and evangelized so well that seventy-five new churches were built in the area. For this Clement was tied to an anchor and cast into the sea. He is invoked against disasters at sea, storms, and lightning. In liturgical art, he is depicted as a pope, sometimes holding an anchor. His feast day is November 23. The original parish boundaries were the same as those today: Jackman Road on the east, Laskey Road on the south, Talmadge Road on the west, and the Michigan State line on the north. The original parish property was 11 acres of weeds bounded by Tremainsville and Alexis Roads. 2
4 When the Bishop named Fr. Frederick Bittman our first pastor on July 3, 1946, only one Mass was offered on Sundays, on the upper floor of the Trilby Fire Station which was located on Secor and Alexis Roads. In 1947, St. Stanislaus parish donated a wooden structure to which our parishioners added a cement block wing, giving us the building we now call Bittman Hall. Bishop Alter dedicated this, our first church building, on February 9, Our grade school students attended St. Agnes School until the parish could build a school. The first wing of our school building was completed in 1952, with an enrollment of 220. The school initially used five classrooms, and had a teaching staff of five Sisters of Mercy. Under the direction of Father George Jaeger our first credit union was organized. By 1956, the parish had grown to 3,052 parishioners, and school enrollment was 471. That year a new addition to the school was completed, adding four more classrooms. The 1956 addition also added what was described at the time as a new temporary church seating 800, the area that has served ever since as our church. In 1958 a convent was completed on St. Clement Court. In 1959 another four classrooms were added to the school. In 1962 the present Parish Office (rectory) was completed as was the building of Jaeger Hall (which originally was a courtyard) and the establishment of a Sunday School, one of the first in the city. In 1969 the new credit union building and a new addition to the school were completed. With the school additions the building housed the school library, teacher s lounge, Faith Formation Office and other offices, and basement storage rooms. In 1970 our Community Center opened, serving as a school gymnasium and a center for many parish social and athletic activities. In 1976 Eleanor Kahle became St. Clement s first Pastoral Associate. In the summer of 1980, our church was completely remodeled to its present form. By 1983, St. Clement s had 9,915 registered parishioners. There were many changes including the building of the new Youth Center and the grand opening was on September 7, In 2010, due to low enrollment and the lack of funds necessary to run the school, St. Clement School closed its doors. That same year The Autism Model School leased the school building. Today, you are a member of a parish made up of about 1,800 families, approximately 4,500 people. Both our spiritual and physical development can be credited to our great pastors: Fr. Bittman, Fr. Jaeger, Fr. William Friemoth, Fr. Frank Nieset, Fr. James Auth, Fr. Gary Miller, Fr. Edward Littelmann, Fr. Michael Brown and our current pastor, Fr. Francis Speier. 3

7 Sacraments at St. Clement Baptisms Baptisms are regularly held on the third Sunday of each month at 1:00 p.m. and at Mass in January, the Sunday after Easter, July, and October. Parents are required to attend a pre-baptism class prior to their child being baptized. Classes are held every other month at 1:00 p.m. in the parish office. You must call the parish office to register for class and baptism. Sacrament of Reconciliation Saturdays at 3:00 p.m. Anytime by appointment. Parish Penance Services are celebrated on the deanery level during the Advent and Lenten seasons. First Communion, First Penance and Confirmation These sacraments are celebrated by the parish with families of our children during the year and with our new adult parishioners at the Easter Vigil as part of the Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults. Parents and children are expected to be part of the parish religious formation programs during the years leading to these sacramental celebrations. Marriage According to Diocesan guidelines, couples are requested to contact the Parish Office to make arrangements for their marriage at least six months before the wedding date. This allows for adequate preparation and personal contact between the presider and the couple preparing for marriage. The couple usually meets several times with the presider and participates in an Engaged Couples Session. Anointing of the Sick The Sacrament of Anointing is celebrated upon request. Anointing is for someone who is seriously ill, chronically ill or facing surgery. A person may be anointed more than once, should conditions change. Funerals The time for funerals is arranged through the funeral director and the Parish Office. Wake services are conducted by our deacons or lay ministers and scheduled for the preceding evening. Ministry Opportunities There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit (1 Cor. 12:4-7). All are called to ministry through the grace of our baptism. We encourage all parishioners to pray for the discernment of their God-given gifts and for the strength and wisdom to use those gifts as God desires. For more information on any of the following ministry opportunities, please call the contact person listed for that ministry or the Parish Office. 6
