1 OLEM NEWSLETTER Archdiocese of Chicago Volume 9, Issue 2 Winter Annual Gathering with the Cardinal The annual luncheon gathering with Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. sponsored by the OLEM took place on December 5, 2006 at St. Mary, Star of the Sea Parish. The event was attended by certified pastoral associates of the diocese who are working in parishes. It was heartening to see the Cardinal doing well after his surgery. His Eminence presided at the liturgy and gave the homily. The all girls choir of the St. Mary, Star of the Sea School provided the music at the prayer service. Their voices brought an angelic dimension to the prayer service. Father John McDonnell, Pastor of St. Mary, Star of the Sea, played host for the event. All the necessary preparations were done marvelously by Terry Navarro, Pastoral Associate at the parish. Everyone, including His Eminence, enjoyed the sumptuous Mexican lunch prepared by a local caterer. The open forum/discussion following the lunch focused on concerns such as the state of the pastoral associate ministry in the diocese and the implementation of the USCCB document, Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord. Another highlight of the event was the awarding of certificates to the newly certified pastoral associates of the Archdiocese of Chicago - Roberta Anderson, St. George, Tinley Park, David Heimann, St. Ignatius, Chicago, Seen with Francis Cardinal George, OMI are David Heimann, Robbie Anderson, Kathy McNicholas, and Sue Lehocky after receiving their formal certificates from His Eminence. 2 Comings and Goings Prayer Requests Sr. Jeanette Lucinio, SP is the new Director of the Office for Women Religious in the Diocese of San Diego in California. Sr. Jeanette was pastoral associate at Sacred Heart Parish in Palos Hills. Sr. Eileen Tierney, CND, pastoral associate at St. Daniel the Prophet, recently had exploratory knee surgery. After a short recovery period, Sister Eileen will have a corrective surgery on the same knee.. Kristin Sadie-Schwarz, pastoral associate at Holy Name Cathedral, and her husband David are the proud parents of a healthy baby girl named Maria. Maria is the couple s first child. Tom Kuhn, husband of Maureen Kuhn, spiritual director/pastoral associate, will be undergoing major surgery at the end of February. Let us remember them in our prayers. 3 IN FOCUS is a regular feature of the OLEM Newsletter. It showcases the works of pastoral associates as they minister in their respective parishes in the hope that these works can serve as a source of inspiration for others. Every issue will feature a pastoral associate and the highlights of her/his ministry. [This is the second in a series featuring certified pastoral associates involved in ministries other than parish ministry.] Judith Bumbul, Campus Minister, Maria High School and Christopher Murphy, Director of University Ministry, Loyola University Chicago Judy Bumbul is Campus Minister at Maria High School. She teaches Theology and serves as the Department Chair. Judy was Liturgy Coordinator/ Pastoral Associate at St. Gall Parish in Chicago when she made the move to campus ministry. The Call: I love St. Gall where I served for 16 years I often joked that I would someday be found dead at my desk, or in the church, or on a roof, since I had wheeled and dealed and replaced all but one of the many roofs at St. Gall. On a Saturday in May 2004, I co-facilitated a VIRTUS training at Maria High School (my and my daughters alma mater) with Sr. Nancy Gannon, sfcc, who was the principal of Maria High School. Sr. Nancy asked if my oldest daughter Julie would be interested in a position as a music teacher. Somehow during our conversation Sr. Nancy asked if I would be interested in a campus ministry position. The motto of Maria High School is Maria Women Make a Difference in the World. I recognized the importance of assisting young women to understand their role and responsibilities to school, church, and society. The thought of working with female teens both terrified and thrilled me. I had also become frustrated with my inability to minister more effectively to our Spanish speaking parishioners. Working at Maria High School would also mean summers off that I could devote to my aging mother who flies from Arizona to be with us for the summer. The difficult part was leaving Chris Murphy is the Director of University Ministry for Loyola University Chicago. At the time of his move to Loyola, Chris was ministering as pastoral associate at St. Mary Parish in Evanston. The Call: In spring of 2000 I was approached by Loyola University Chicago to consider serving as the Chaplain to the Business School. The position and possibilities for future promotion were attractive to me in discerning how best to continue my ministry. I accepted the position in August of The value of the experience and training as pastoral associate: As a pastoral associate I had multiple responsibilities - pastoral care, liturgy, and business. These responsibilities required me to operate on many different levels moving from analytical, to creative to pastoral throughout any given day at the parish. Today overseeing the multiple campus ministry initiatives as well as for effective operations, I am grateful for the experiential learning that came from being at a parish with multiple demands upon my ministry. 4 IN FOCUS: Judy Bumbul and Chris Murphy ministry at St. Gall. Father John Dearhammer understood all my reasons and gave me his blessing. The value of the experience and training as pastoral associate: My experience in liturgy, counseling, food collection, service projects, visiting the sick, funeral planning and antiracism training have been assets. When one of our students was tragically killed in a car accident last year, I was able to assist our Counseling Department and also help our students plan and implement a memorial service. The anti-racism training has helped me recognize ny own white privilage and effectively minister and teach in a racially diverse environment. Diversity is celebrated and respected. How the current ministry reflects Judy s vocation: My love for God and the Church is one of the greatest gifts I attempt to share with the Maria High School community. I want my new daughters to understand that each of them is created in the image of God. On Maintaining PA Certification: Absolutely! I proudly identify myself as a pastoral associate and am grateful for the support of PAAC (Pastoral Associates of the Archdiocese of Chicago) and pastoral associates. I love my current position at Maria High School, but one never knows what God might ask me next. Some inspiring words for colleagues in ministry: A pastoral associate is one of the best assets Catholic institutions can provide to effectively minister to the faithful. Pastoral associates know how to be partners in ministry. The Church needs us. We need the Church. Thank you for your support, affirmation, friendship, and assistance. Please remember Maria High School and me in your prayers and please keep in touch. How the current ministry reflects Chris vocation: I sense my vocation is to bring effective organizational and pastoral skills to the community I am serving. Upon arriving at Loyola University Chicago the school was in the midst of a financial and leadership crisis. My leadership ability allowed me to participate in the reanimation of Loyola s Catholic Jesuit mission. I have a strong sense that we campus ministers are providing for the Sprit to engage students in learning to be disciples. On Maintaining PA Certification: I am a strong believer in keeping accountability among one s peers. I have kept my PA and NACC certifications current so that I stay engaged with current thinking and practices as well as retain a peer group. Accountability is an important factor in maintaining one s fitness for ministry. Some inspiring words for colleagues in ministry: I recently heard Simone Campbell give a talk on the Theology of Insecurity. In these tumultuous times we often seek security think Homeland Security. I sense that pastoral associates serve with little security and yet the demands on our service are great and our response as ministers is tremendous. With little security we continue to serve in bringing forth the reign of God. I would encourage us all to realize the insecurity that surrounds us and find ways to live authentically. - Chris Murphy - Judy Bumbul OLEM Newsletter Page 4
