Christ Church on Capitol Square Choral Evensong According to the 1662 Book of Common Prayer Sunday, May 6, p.m. Sixth Sunday of Easter Choristers & Lay Clerks & The Adult Choir 1

Welcome to Choral Evensong. We hope that you will enter into a time of prayer by letting the voices of the Choir lift your thoughts and prayers to the throne of God s grace. While the Choir will pray most of the responses and canticles on your behalf, you are invited to participate heartily in the singing of the hymns. Please silence electronic devices. Sit Voluntary Sit Introit: Eternal Light Leo Sowerby Stand Love divine, all loves excelling Hymn 657 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Psalm li. 9 DEARLY beloved people of God, the Scripture moveth us, in sundry places, to acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness; and that we should not dissemble nor cloak them before the face of Almighty God our heavenly Father; but confess them with an humble, lowly, penitent, and obedient heart; to the end that we may obtain forgiveness of the same, by his infinite goodness and mercy. And although we ought, at all times, humbly to acknowledge our sins before God; yet ought we chiefly so to do, when we assemble and meet together to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his most holy Word, and to ask those things which are requisite and necessary, as well for the body as the soul. Wherefore I pray and beseech you, as many as are here present, to accompany me with a pure heart, and humble voice, unto the throne of the heavenly grace, saying after me; A general Confession to be said of the whole Congregation after the Minister, all kneeling. Kneel ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father; We have erred, and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou them, O God, who confess their faults. Restore thou those who are penitent; According to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesu our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen. 2

ALMIGHTY God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desireth not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness, and live; and hath given power, and commandment, to his Ministers, to declare and pronounce to his people, being penitent, the Absolution and Remission of their sins : He pardoneth and absolveth all them that truly repent, and unfeignedly believe his holy Gospel. Wherefore let us beseech him to grant us true repentance, and his Holy Spirit, that those things may please him, which we do at this present; and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure, and holy; so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Preces and Responses Kenneth Leighton Officiant: Choir: Officiant: Choir: Officiant: Choir: O Lord, open thou our lips. And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord s name be praised. 3

Sit The Psalm: Psalm 98 W. Boyce in D 1 O sing unto the Lord a new song for he hath done marvelous things. 2 With his own right hand, and with his holy arm hath he gotten himself the victory. 3 The Lord declared his salvation his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen. 4 He hath remembered his mercy and truth toward the house of Israel and all the ends of the world have seen the salvation of our God. 5 Shew yourselves joyful unto the Lord, all ye lands sing, rejoice, and give thanks. 6 Praise the Lord upon the harp singto the harp with a psalm of thanksgiving. 7 With trumpets also, and shawms O shew yourselves joyful before the Lord the King. 8 Let the sea make a noise, and all that therein is the round world, and they that dwell therein. 9 Let the floods clap their hands, and let the hills be joyful together before the Lord for he is come to judge the earth. 10 With righteousness shall he judge the world and the people with equity. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Sit The First Lesson: 1 John 5:1-6 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 4

This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth. Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Kneel Magnificat Leo Sowerby This is the song of Mary when she was told that she was to be the mother of Christ; forming a bridge between the two lessons. My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 5

Sit The Gospel: John 15:9-17 Jesus said to his disciples, As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father s commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. 6

Kneel Nunc Dimittis Leo Sowerby Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; for my eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people. To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Sit Homily The Rev. James P. Adams Apostles Creed Intoned by all, please stand. I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Kneel The Prayers (Sung by the Choir) Kenneth Leighton Officiant: The Lord be with you. Choir: And with thy spirit. Officiant: Let us pray. Choir: Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. The Lord s Prayer is intoned by all. 7

Suffrages (Prayers sung responsorially by the Choir and Officiant) V. O Lord, show thy mercy upon us. R. And grant us thy salvation. V. O Lord, save the state. R. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. V. Endue the ministers with righteousness. R. And make thy chosen people joyful. V. O Lord, save thy people. R. And bless thine inheritance. V. Give peace in our time, O Lord. R. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. V. O God, make clean our hearts within us. R. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. The Collects Collects are intoned by the Officiant; the Choir responds by singing Amen. Collect for the Day O God, who hast prepared for those who love thee such good things as pass man s understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards thee, that we, loving thee in all things and above all things, may obtain thy promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen. Collect for Church Musicians and Artists O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. 8 Collect for Aid against Perils Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Sit Offertory Anthem Rejoice in the Lamb Benjamin Britten Rejoice in God, O ye Tongues; give the glory to the Lord, and the Lamb. Nations, and languages, and every Creature in which is the breath of Life. Let man and beast appear before him, and magnify his name together. Let Nimrod, the mighty hunter, bind a Leopard to the altar and consecrate his spear to the Lord. Let Ishmail dedicate a Tyger, and give praise for the liberty in which the Lord has let him at large. Let Balaam appear with an Ass, and bless the Lord his people and his creatures for a reward eternal. Let Daniel come forth with a Lion, and praise God with all his might through faith in Christ Jesus. Let Ithamar minister with a Chamois, and bless the name of Him that cloatheth the naked. Let Jakim with the Satyr bless God in the dance. Let David bless with the Bear The beginning of victory to the Lord to the Lord the perfection of excellence. Hallelujah from the heart of God, and from the hand of the artist inimitable, and from the echo of the heavenly harp in sweetness magnifical and mighty. For I will consider my cat Jeoffry. For he is the servant of the Living God, duly and daily serving him. For at the first glance of the glory of God in the East he worships in his way. For this is done by wreathing his body seven times round with elegant quickness. For he knows that God is his Saviour. For God has bless d him in the variety of his movements. For there is nothing sweeter than his peace when at rest. For I am possessed of a cat, surpassing in beauty, from whom I take occasion to bless Almighty God. For the Mouse is a creature of great personal valour. For this is a true case: Cat takes female mouse; male mouse will not depart, but stands threat ning and daring. If you will let her go, I will engage you, as prodigious a creature as you are. For the Mouse is a creature of great personal valour. For the Mouse is of an hospitable disposition. For the flowers are great blessings. For the flowers have their angels even the words of God s Creation. For the flower glorifies God and the root parries the adversary. For there is a language of flowers. For the flowers are peculiarly the poetry of Christ. For I am under the same accusation with my Saviour, for they said, he is besides himself. For the officers of the peace are at variance with me, and the watchman smites me with his staff. For Silly fellow! Silly fellow! is against me, and belongeth neither to me nor to my family. For I am in twelve HARDSHIPS, but he that was born of a virgin shall deliver me out of all. For H is a spirit and therefore he is God. For K is king and therefore he is God. 9

Stand Stand For L is love and therefore he is God. For M is musick and therefore he is God. For the instruments are by their rhimes. For the Shawm rhimes are lawn fawn moon boon and the like. For the harp rhimes are sing ring string and the like. For the cymbal rhimes are bell well toll soul and the like. For the flute rhimes are tooth youth suit mute and the like. For the Bassoon rhimes are pass class and the like. For the dulcimer rhimes are grace place beat heat and the like. For the Clarinet rhimes are clean seen and the like. For the trumpet rhimes are sound bound soar more and the like. For the TRUMPET of God is a blessed intelligence and so are all the instruments in HEAVEN. For GOD the Father Almighty plays upon the HARP of stupendous magnitude and melody. For at that time malignity ceases and the devils themselves are at peace. For this time is perceptible to man by a remarkable stillness and serenity of soul. Hallelujah from the heart of God, and from the hand of the artist inimitable, and from the echo of the heavenly harp in sweetness magnifical and mighty. The General Thanksgiving Said by all. Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all people. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. Closing Versicle and Grace Stand Christ, mighty saviour Hymn 35 Sit Voluntary
