2 Welcome to Choral Evensong. We hope that you will enter into a time of prayer by letting the voices of the Choir lift your thoughts and prayers to the throne of God s grace. While the Choir will pray most of the responses and canticles on your behalf, you are invited to participate heartily in the singing of the hymns. Please silence electronic devices. Psalm li. 9 DEARLY beloved people of God, the Scripture moveth us, in sundry places, to acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness; and that we should not dissemble nor cloak them before the face of Almighty God our heavenly Father; but confess them with an humble, lowly, penitent, and obedient heart; to the end that we may obtain forgiveness of the same, by his infinite goodness and mercy. And although we ought, at all times, humbly to acknowledge our sins before God; yet ought we chiefly so to do, when we assemble and meet together to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his most holy Word, and to ask those things which are requisite and necessary, as well for the body as the soul. Sit The First Lesson: Deuteronomy 5:12-15 Observe the sabbath day and keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work you, or your son or your daughter, or your male or female slave, or your ox or your donkey, or any of your livestock, or the resident alien in your towns, so that your male and female slave may rest as well as you. Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the sabbath day. 5 Kneel or Stand Magnificat Herbert Howells This is the song of Mary when she was told that she was to be the mother of Christ; forming a bridge between the two lessons. My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. 6 Sit The New Testament: 2 Corinthians 4:5-12 We do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus sake. For it is the God who said, Let light shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. For while we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus sake, so that the life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. 9 Sit Offertory Anthem Phos Hilaron David Jernigan This anthem was composed in honor of our Rector The Rev. James P. Adams. The Phos Hilaron is a Greek prayer, written in the third-century. It is thought to be the oldest non-biblical prayer in Christian history. 1. O gracious Light, pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven. O Jesus, Christ, holy and blessed! 2. Now as we come to the setting of the sun, and our eyes behold the vesper light, we sing thy praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 3. Thou art worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices, O Son of God, O Giver of life, and to be glorified through all the worlds. Stand The General Thanksgiving Said by all. Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all people. Youth sign up is available at Common Ground Meetings at Christ Church Common Ground Group is an open meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous that meets at Christ Church in Room 213 on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. Childcare is provided through the group in Room 207. Open AA meetings are available to anyone interested in Alcoholics Anonymous program of recovery. Nonalcoholics may attend open meetings as observers. Outreach Shepherd s Table Soup Kitchen Christ Church Team Sign up to serve today - On the first Wednesday of the month Christ Church is responsible for partnering with Shepherd s Table Soup Kitchen (Church of the Good Shepherd) and providing a team of 5-6 volunteers. Teams will park and meet in Christ Church Commons at 9 a.m. to walk over to Shepherd s Table and serve 9:15 a.m. - 12:30 a.m. All volunteers must be at least 18 years or older to serve. Youth ages years may be accompanied by a parent and serve together only. To be part of the Baker Wing team. We are recruiting for next year. No experience is needed and all ages are welcome. Season after the Day of Pentecost -Following the special feast day of Pentecost (50 days of Easter), there is the Season after Pentecost, otherwise known as Ordinary Time. For all of those Sundays in the summer, and all the way up to Advent, the liturgical color is green, unless some other special feast day (e.g. All Saints Sunday in November) is happening. In this Season of Pentecost, we celebrate the sacred in the ordinary, the renewing of the earth, and all the ways that Christ s presence in the church gives us life and hope. Youth Ministry Youth Camp Care Packages Help us stay connected this summer! If you have a middle or high school student who is going away to camp this summer and would like to receive mail from church please Martha Cox, mcox@ccral.org. We need their name and camp address, also indicate whether they are allowed to a care package or just mail. All addresses are needed by June 10. Youth VBS Volunteers Needed! During the week of Vacation Bible School we encourage youth (grades 6-12) to sign up to serve as volunteers with this important ministry. Students will work in classrooms with children or at particular stations helping with the daily activities. You may sign up to volunteer from 8:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. for the entire week or any combination of days. VBS 2018 will be held the week of June All student volunteers must have a youth medical release form on file prior to the beginning of VBS. Confirmation Registration for Rising 8th Grade Students Confirmation is a sacramental rite where you are affirming your covenant, or promise, from Baptism that was made by your parents. Confirmation is your turn to prepare and renew or strengthen your beliefs. In Confirmation we ask for God s help in our relationship with God and with the Church. There is not a set time in life to be confirmed. Everyone must answer for themselves I do, I Believe, and I will with God s Help. Your church and family provide the support, but it is your decision. We begin to offer confirmation as a class for students during their 8th grade year; however, you can be confirmed at other ages as well. We are looking forward to a wonderful year. Confirmation registration is due June 10: Sponsors registration is due September 15: Diaper Train Youth Summer Service For rising 7th grade and older. Sign up - Diaper Train is excited to partner with Christ Church youth over the summer. This summer they are combing efforts and having one volunteer page. By doing this we need your help and ask that only two youth register per shift and that you designate youth with a y on the sign up page. The Diaper Train provides diapers to low-income families in Wake County, improving the lives of babies and toddlers. The program is run by volunteers and serves 1,000 children each month. Duties may include wrapping, stocking and carrying diapers for clients. Location: Saint Saviour s Center, 616 Tucker Street (on the Boylan St. side of the building), Raleigh Youth Summer Mission 2019 Registration deadline: Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018 (online registration, written application, and $200 deposit all required to complete registration and reserve spot) Next summer we will have an opportunity for youth to travel on an international mission trip. This trip will be for 10th & 11th grade students ( ) and applications are due this fall, as it takes a full year of preparation for the journey. We hope you will consider joining us for an amazing opportunity to experience God s love through travel, mission, humility, culture, and worship. This trip allows students to work outside the comforts of their daily life and allows growth by both the receiving and sharing of faith, love, and grace.
