2 PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD APRIL 09, 2017 Today s Gospel Reflection Procession: Mt 21:1-11 * First Reading: Is 50:4-7 * Psalm: Ps 22:8-9, 17-20, * 2nd Reading: Phil 2:6-11 * Gospel: Mt 26:14 27:66 [27:11-54] SEEING CHRIST CLEARLY We start today looking through the portals of Jerusalem, seeing crowds of people, cheering and waving palm branches in the air. The whole atmosphere is one of joy, triumph, and celebration. We can get distracted or enthralled by the scene, and not see clearly the features of Jesus as he enters. But our readings from Isaiah and Paul s letter to the Philippians clarify his features for us. He is the Suffering Servant, meek and mute before his captors and persecutors; he is the very image of the unseen God, yet will not clutch at equality with God before he endures his final confrontation in humility. Isaiah and Paul help us behold the Lamb of God before we hear the story of his final and greatest confrontation. It is important that we see Christ clearly before we hear the account of his passion, for we his Body through baptism, the church now bear his face. We must, with him, enter into this time of trial so we can, also with him, enter into his final triumph. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 3 ST. MICHAEL CATHOLIC CHURCH PARADISE HILLS, SAN DIEGO APRIL 09, 2017 Dear Parishioners and friends, Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord. One gift our Palm Sunday worship offers is the reminder that no barrier exists between us and God. Jesus knows us, treasures us, and saves us, no matter the abuse or hatred we have endured or the sins we have committed. Though Jesus is blameless, he accepts punishment for us. Our readings today invite us to imagine ourselves in any of the situations described, and know that our Lord has also been in that place. Isaiah mentions someone who is well spoken as well as someone who is weary, abused, and discouraged. Philippians highlights the two natures of Jesus Christ: the human, which we know intimately, and the divine, which makes Jesus uniquely worthy of adoration and praise. The Gospel invites us to imagine ourselves as any of the characters we see: corrupt or pure, doubting or faithful, abusive or suffering. Our Lord knows all these experiences and offers salvation. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PASTOR S MESSAGE Seven Churches Visitation. The tradition of visiting seven churches on Holy Thursday probably originated in Rome, as early pilgrims visited the seven basilicas as penance. The Via Francigena was an ancient pilgrim route between England and Rome. The tradition of visiting all seven churches was started by Saint Philip Neri around He and a few friends would gather before dawn and set out on their Seven Churches Walk. The Walks became very popular and began to attract others. After the Mass of the Lord s Supper, during which Christians remember Jesus Christ s last meal with His Apostles on the night that He was arrested, the faithful remember Jesus Agony in the Garden. After the Mass, the main and most side altars are stripped; all crosses are either removed or covered; the Blessed Sacrament is placed in a tabernacle on the Altar of Repose, and churches are open late for silent adoration. This is response to Jesus request to His apostles while they were in the Garden, Could you not keep watch with Me for one hour? (Matthew 26:40) Those who practice this visitation leave the church where they attended the Mass of the Lord s Supper and travel to nearby churches to pray before the Blessed Sacrament. This occurs most frequently in urban areas where churches are close proximity making traveling easier. There are no set of prayers given by the Catholic Church except to pray for the intentions of the Pope and recite the Lord s Prayer, Hail Mary and Gloria Patri. In the Philippines, the tradition is known as Visita Iglesia (Church Visit). The general practice is to visit seven Churches either on Maundy Thursday or Good Friday. While traditionally done on Maundy Thursday, after the Mass of the Last Supper, it is now common to perform Visita Iglesia on any day during the Holy Week. Fr. Manny Ediza We should glory in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, in whom is our salvation, life and resurrection; through whom we are saved and delivered. Let us respect and love human life, especially vulnerable life in a mother s womb. - Pope Francis The promotion of the culture of life should be the highest priority in our societies If the right to life is not defended decisively as a condition for all other rights of the person, all other references to human rights remain deceitful and illusory. - St. Pope John Paul II Human Life is sacred all men must recognize that fact. From its very inception it reveals the creating hand of God. - St. Pope John XXIII St. Michael Preschool Lucy Zamorano, Director Lic. # % off Registration Instruction for March thru August 2017 is available for ages two to five years. Religious Education TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Now we have come to the center of the Christian year, beginning with today, Passion Sunday, Holy Week, and culminating in the Pasch, the Sacred Triduum. Some have called the culminating event in this week s journey of faith The Three Days of Easter. The origins of many of our observances, including today s blessing of palms and solemn entry into the church, hearken back to old Jerusalem. In the late fourth century, a woman living a consecrated life in southern France made a four-year pilgrimage to Jerusalem. There, she encountered the rich liturgies of the city, bursting with Christians. She was a keen observer, and fortunately for us wrote vivid letters of her experience to a circle of women friends she calls her sisters. By the time of her journey, it is clear that even some catechumens were undertaking the dangerous journey so that they could be formed at the very site of the events of Christ s passion and rising. At the heart of the pilgrim experience were processions, such as today s joyous procession to the Mount of Olives, and brilliant catechesis from the bishop every day, as well as intense fasting and prayer. When you resolve to keep this week holy in your own life, and especially when you commit to participate in the full Triduum with worship in church and fasting at home, a very ancient tradition is within your grasp. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. RESURRECTION TO COME But from this earth, this grave, this dust, My God shall raise me up, I trust. Walter Raleigh Join us for the Liturgy of the Hours every morning (Monday - Saturday), 7:30 a.m. before the 8:00 a.m. Mass.

5 ST. MICHAEL CATHOLIC CHURCH PARADISE HILLS, SAN DIEGO APRIL 09, 2017 STEWARDSHIP A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion Weekend of April 8/9, 2017 We are at the doorsteps of Holy Week where we remember Christ s passion. Jesus humbled himself and let go of everything, emptying himself for us. During this time of Lent, how have we joined the Lord? Has our prayer, penitential practices and almsgiving moved us to humble ourselves before the Lord? Have we let go of things that keep us from being authentic stewards for Christ Jesus? How have we emptied ourselves so that when we do approach the table of the Lord, we can be nourished by His body and blood? As disciples of Christ and stewards of His gift of faith, it is time to evaluate our lives under the cross. - International Catholic Stewardship Council, Parish Enews A STEWARDSHIP PRAYER for APRIL Christ Our Savior, As our Lenten journey brings us closer to Easter, we see with a deeper awareness our world s desperate need to experience the healing power of your justice and peace. Make us sacraments of your mercy and instruments of your compassion. Show us how to be better stewards of your people; through our families, our brothers and sisters with whom we share your Eucharist, our neighbors, and the stranger. Show us how to carry the cross so that by dying to ourselves, we may give new life to others. And strengthen our faith, so that we may proclaim your Easter triumph more confidently, every day, in word and deed. Amen. Be a Part of the Dream Together We Build For those who have already pledged to participate, please fulfill your commitment. Different ways of fulfilling your commitment are as follow: Use the white envelopes with the logo which may be found in the pews or in the vestibule. Feel free to take envelopes you need. Drop your contributions in the offertory basket during Mass, or mail it, or take it to the parish office. Call the parish office at if you want envelopes be mailed to you. Set up auto payment with your Bank or Credit Card. Call the office for instructions. Participate online. Visit register for online giving and click on the Capital Campaign. If paying by check, make it payable to St. Michael Church Capital Campaign, or write on the Memo line: For Capital Campaign. THANK YOU FOR BEING PART OF THE DREAM! FINDING HOPE IN THE CROSS Do you ever think about how you experience the cross of Jesus Christ? Do you ever think about the power of that cross in your daily life? Is the cross even relevant to your life? It is to stewards of the Lord, who recognize the hope Christ brings through the gift of his cross. They acknowledge that for them, the cross is their only hope. Being good stewards of our life in Christ is not easy, but to embrace the cross is not only countercultural, it seems absurd. Then again, we cannot avoid what Jesus said to his disciples: If you wish to come after me you must deny yourself and take up your cross daily and follow me. For if you wish to save your life, you will lose it; but if you lose your life for my sake you will save it (Luke 9:23-24). The cross is more readily embraced by people of faith who suffer, are poor, broken, or are the victims of such things as violence, oppression or natural disasters. They see the cross as the hope that no matter what has happened to them, God will see them through. The Father did it for Jesus who hung on the cross, so surely their sufferings will be redeemed by Jesus sufferings. Where people possess much material abundance, comfort and leisure, however, there is a tendency to de-emphasize the cross, to draw away from it. They can t touch it or feel it so they wish to save their lives by looking to other things: power, wealth, fame, relevance, being the center of attention. What is preached about the cross from the pulpit sounds good, but in reality something more tangible is desired. Christ emptied himself completely in humble obedience, allowing himself to suffer and die out of compassion for the world (Philippians 2:6-11). Good stewards follow his example and work day-to-day to empty themselves and live compassionately; most noticeably by sharing their lives with others. As we approach the climax of our liturgical year, the Easter Triduum, let us ask the Holy Spirit for an even deeper awareness of the cross in our lives. Let us find hope in the cross and pray that as we embrace it, we too will experience in a special way the joy of new life in the risen Lord. - International Catholic Stewardship Council, Parish Enews, April 2017 THE LORD S WIDOWS A Support Group for Widows meet every 2nd Saturday of the Month, at 9:00am in the Collier Center. Call for more information. For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord s. - Romans 14:8 Page 5

Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Show us the way to meet the needs of our growing parish community. Lead us to committing ourselves with a spirit of true sacrifice. For it is always by sacrifice that we show our love of You and our neighbor. Lead us to wisely use our time, talents and treasures as we move forward with Your holy vision. Inspire us all out of Your generous love, to be equally generous for strengthening Your Church and our parish. Spirit of God, we praise You and adore You. We pray that Your Spirit will empower us to work strongly for the realization of our dream so that future generations will harvest the fruits of our commitments and sacrifice. This we ask through Christ our Lord. Amen. Mary Mother of God, pray for us. St. Joseph the Builder, pray for us. St. Michael the Archangel, pray for us.
