Those comments which are legible [they are all very badly scrawled and may have been recorded as they were pronounced] call for a deferment of a decision on the topic discussed. REMARKS: Dossier composed of nos S.C.C., Acta Congregationis Consistorialis, VOL TOM. I, fol. 61r-62r, ITEM(S) 132 Paris 1674, March, 16 AUTHOR: N. RECIPIENT: Cdl. Altieri Copy of LS., the N. [Spada] in France to cdl. Altieri: the writer has informed the bp. of Petraea [Laval] of the accusations brought against him by the Cistercians concerning the abbey Lestrées. Laval was astonished by these and described the state of affairs of the abbey and his (royal) permission to unite it with the [proposed] episcopal revenue of Québec in lieu of a pension of 2000 francs which he would rather have. Laval impatiently awaits his bulls so that he can return to his church and the N. finds him to be most respectful and humbly reverent. [v of 62 is B]. Laval notes his obligation to found a cathedral chapter of canons included in the bull for the erection of the bishopric and states that he has proceeded with this foundation. Bishopric funds (from the abbey of Maubec) are not sufficient however and Laval requests the abbatial and conventual revenues of the abbey Lestrées. [v of 509 is B]. REMARKS: Dossier composed by nos S.C.C., Acta Congregationis Consistorialis, VOL , fol. 174r-177v, ITEM(S) 142 Paris 1679, January, 27 Titled "Information on the Abbeys Lestrées and Maubec and the current reputation in Paris of the bp. of Québec [Laval] in New France" this is a detailed account of the condition of the two abbeys which includes information about their last abbots, the number of monks now dependent on them and the sources for, and the size of, their conventual and abbatial revenues. The report concludes with the statement that "the reputation of the bp. of Québec [Laval] in New France could not be better". His general deportment is lauded and he is said to have devoted his entire life to the establishment and expansion of the [Roman Catholic] faith in his diocese.
