2 ST. N. NICHOLAS SERBIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH is a parish of the Eastern Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church under the Omophorion of His Grace, Bishop IRINEJ, pastored by Father Christopher Rocknage. OUR VISION: To be a strong and vibrant community enabling parishioners to live the fullness of the Orthodox Faith in our Lord, Jesus Christ, "as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God." (I Cor. 4:1) OUR MISSION: To teach, assist, and provide the environment for stewards to live the message of our Lord Jesus Christ in their daily lives through worship, witness, outreach, stewardship, service, education and fellowship. Special Hymns RESURRECTIONAL TROPARION TONE 1 When the stone had been sealed by the Jews, while the soldiers were guarding Your most pure body, You rose on the third day, O Savior, granting life to the world. The powers of heaven therefore cried to You, O Giver of Life: Glory to Your Resurrection, O Christ! Glory to Your Kingdom! Glory to Your dispensation, O Lover of mankind! CROSS TROPARION TONE 1 O Lord, save Your people, and bless Your inheritance! Grant victories to the Orthodox Christians over their adversaries; and by virtue of Your Cross, preserve Your habitation! RIGHTEOUS EUDOCIMUS TROPARION TONE 4 He Who called you from earth to heaven, keeps your body unharmed after death, holy Eudocimus; for you lived a sober and holy life and did not defile your flesh; so with boldness intercede with Christ that we may be saved! RESURRECTIONAL KONTAKION TONE 1 As God, You rose from the tomb in glory, raising the world with Yourself. Human nature praises You as God, for death has vanished. Adam exults, O Master! Eve rejoices, for she is freed from bondage and cries to You: You are the Giver of Resurrection to all, O Christ! HYMN TO THE THEOTOKOS TONE 6 Steadfast Protectress of Christians, Constant Advocate before the Creator; despise not the cry of us sinners, but in your goodness come speedily to help us who call on you in faith. Hasten to hear our petition and to intercede for us, O Theotokos, for you always protect those who honor you! 3 Holy Scripture Readings EPISTLE: 1 Corinthians 4: 9-16 PRIEST: DEACON: PRIEST: PRIEST: PRIEST: DEACON: SCRIPTURAL CORNER Let us pay attention. Peace be unto all! And with your spirit! Wisdom. The Prokeimenon in the First Tone: Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us as we have set our hope on You! (sings) Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us as we have set our hope on You! v: Rejoice in the Lord, O your righteous! Praise befits the just! (sings) Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us as we have set our hope on You! Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us... (sings)...as we have set our hope on You! Wisdom. The Reading is from the first Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Corinthians. Let us attend! Brethren, for I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last, as men condemned to death; for we have been made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ s sake, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored! To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless. And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; being defamed, we entreat. We have been made as the filth of the world, the off scouring of all things until now. I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved children I warn you. For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. Therefore I urge you, imitate me. PRIEST: CHOIR: CHOIR: CHOIR: Peace be unto you, reader! And with your spirit! Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! God gives vengeance unto me, and subdues people under me. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! He magnifies the salvation of the King and deals mercifully with David, His anointed, and his seed forever. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

4 MATINS GOSPEL: 10th Resurrection Gospel: John 21:1-14 At that time, Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, I am going fishing. They said to him, We are going with you also. They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Then Jesus said to them, Children, have you any food? They answered Him, No. And He said to them, Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some. So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish. Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, It is the Lord! Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, Bring some of the fish which you have just caught. Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. Jesus said to them, Come and eat breakfast. Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, Who are You? knowing that it was the Lord. Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish. This is now the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead. LITURGY GOSPEL: 17:14-23 At that time, when they had come to the multitude, a man came to Him, kneeling down to Him and saying, Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. So I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not cure him. Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me. And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, Why could we not cast it out? So Jesus said to them, Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting. Now while they were staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them, The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him, and the third day He will be raised up. And they were exceedingly sorrowful.

It is located on Mt. Athos in Greece where then Prince Rastko, and eventually his father, Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja, took their monastic vows. For nine centuries the Monastery has been an inspiration to Orthodox Christians, especially Serbs since it is the only Serbian monastery among the 20 monasteries on Mt. Athos. While no women are allowed on Mt. Athos, the abbess of Hilandar is considered to be the Theotokos. Indeed, all of Mt Athos is considered the garden of the Holy Mother of God. Hilandar Monastery is a spiritual refuge for frail and elderly monks and a spiritual haven for monks who are studying scriptures, writings of the early Fathers, and renewing their contemplative lives. It also holds extensive archives and miracleworking icons. It is home to 30 monks. Work continues on restoring the approximately 50% of the Monastery damaged or destroyed by fire in PLEASE SEND ALL BULLETIN REQUESTS TO THE CHURCH OFFICE AT office@stnicholassteelton.org. 10 SAINT EUDOCIMUS Synaxarion Eudocimus was born in Cappadocia of devout parents, Basil and Eudocia. At the time of the Emperor Theophilus ( ), Eudocimus was a young officer in the army. Even as an officer, he exerted all his effort to live according to the commandments of the Gospel. Preserving his purity undefiled, he avoided conversing with any woman except his mother. He was merciful toward the unfortunate and needy, conscientious in reading holy books, and even more conscientious in his prayers to God. He avoided vain amusements and idle talk. Amid the throngs and worldly vanity, he was a lily among thorns, and as gold in the fire. Because of his extraordinary virtues the emperor appointed him governor of Cappadocia. In this high position, Eudocimus strove to be righteous before God and men. By God s providence he died at an early age, in his thirty-third year. His relics were found to possess healing properties. An insane man touched his tomb, and was immediately healed; likewise a paralytic child stood up and was made whole. After eighteen months, his mother opened his coffin and found his body to be as though it were still alive, without any signs of decay or corruption. A wonderful fragrance arose from it. His relics were later translated to Constantinople and buried in a new church dedicated to the Holy Theotokos, built by the parents of this righteous Eudocimus. THE HOLY MARTYR JULITTA Julitta was from Caesarea, in Cappadocia. When she had a dispute with her neighbor over some property, the neighbor went to the judge and denounced Julitta as a Christian, which at the time placed her outside of the protection of the law. St. Julitta gladly denied her property rather than her Faith. However, even after this the evil pagans did not leave her in peace, but tortured her, and finally burned her to death in the year 303. Thus, this follower of Christ sacrificed her estate and her body for the sake of the eternal salvation of her soul. SAINT JOSEPH OF ARIMATHEA The noble Joseph, a wealthy man and member of the Jewish Sanhedrin, was secretly a follower of Christ ( 27:57, John 19:38). Joseph and Nicodemus removed the body of Christ from the Cross, and placed it in Joseph s sepulcher. As a result of this he was bound by the Jews and thrown into prison. There the resurrected Lord appeared to him and convinced him of His Resurrection. The Jews later released Joseph from prison and banished him from his fatherland. He traveled throughout the world preaching the Gospel of Christ, and brought the good tidings even to England, where he reposed in the Lord. SAINT JOHN THE EXARCH John was a distinguished Bulgarian priest and theologian during the time of Tsar Simeon ( ). He translated the Hexaemeron of St. Basil and the Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith of St. John Damascene into Slavonic. He reposed peacefully in the Lord.

11 Reflections by the Lake Ascetics in the wilderness labor to cut off their own will and live according to the will of God. Some erroneously think that the hermit lives completely in isolation. No hermit thinks this. He lives in the company of God, His angels and the saints. Wherever a man s mind is, there also is his life. The mind of the hermit dwells among the greatest, most pure and most numerous company in which a man can possibly dwell. Abba Mark once reproached St. Arsenius the hermit: For what reason do you flee from our company and from converse with us? Arsenius replied: God knows that I love you all, but I cannot be with both God and man. In heaven thousands, and thousands of thousands, have but one will; but with men there are many and various wills. That is why I cannot leave God, and be with men. ~St. Nicholai of Žiča, Ochrid and All-America Stewardship When you think about the financial commitment, time and effort necessary for household purchases, although important, one must ask how much time do we spend when it comes to the financial commitment, time and effort related to our salvation and Church? Is God waiting for our acceptance or rejection? Have we gone through a laborious process to prepare for Judgment Day? At least with a home, HDTV, or refrigerator, there is a defined time but with our salvation, it is what we must prepare for on a daily basis! God will measure us by our works and when we stand before the dread Judgment Seat, will we be able to provide a good account of how we used our Time, Talents and Treasures? As we approach the fall months, please remember your Church and all of the ministries it supports.
