Each week the weekly bulletin will give the name of the intention or person (with RIP added for the deceased) or will say for a private intention if you wish it to remain just known to yourself. The cost for this will be 5 and will go towards the cost of the special oil that is needed. Please contact Father Richard by telephone or and arrange to give the money to him when you see him. Please contact Roger Harrison. The Campoverde Bible Study and Discussion Group: This is now the Lent Study Group. It takes place each Tuesday at 2.30 p.m. This week, Tuesday 6 th March, it will be at Calle Enebro 5. Everyone is welcome to join this group; you do not have to live in Campoverde or attend Campoverde Church. Dates ahead: Please would organisers send details to Father Richard for inclusion on this sheet as well as the other publicity opportunities in the Chaplaincy. This gives people an idea of what is coming up (and so we don t get clashes or overloaded...). Wednesday 14 th March LOS BALCONES 1000 CHAPLAINCY ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING beginning with a celebration of the Holy Eucharist NOTE ALL PAPERS REGARDING THE ANNUAL CHAPLAINCY MEETING WILL BE SENT BY IN ADVANCE TO MEMBERS ON THE ELECTORAL ROLL. NO REPORTS WILL BE READ ON THE DAY. Please submit your reports in electronic form to Jill Dorsett by Wednesday 28 th February. Any other business to be advised to Fr. Richard and the Secretary by March 7 th. No other business will be taken from the floor at the meeting. Monday 19 th March HOLY HOUR at Lago Jardín from During Lent, a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, we are invited to spend more time with Jesus. One of the ways we can do this is coming into his Eucharistic presence. We begin with Evening Prayer and then have a time of both silent and led prayer in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament and, to conclude, receive his Eucharistic blessing. All are invited to come and experience this beautiful and refreshing act of prayer and devotion. Wednesday 21 st March STATIONS OF THE CROSS This annual devotional event, sponsored by the Mothers Union, takes place each year at the outdoor Stations of the Cross in Rojales. All are invited. We meet at the bottom of the

hill, by the first station, at 1100 to commence at 1130. Lunch follows at the Rialto Restaurant (1300 for 1330) in Benimar.

Stations of the Cross is a moving devotion which follows Christ on his journey from condemnation in Pilate s palace, his journey to Calvary, his Crucifixion and his Burial. We meditate upon the different stations and how they are reflected in our own lives of faith and what each one means for us today. If you haven t been before, please come along and experience this for yourself. Tickets twenty five euros from Peter Maude on Father Richard writes: Margaret Hirst takes her last service as a Reader in this Chaplaincy on Sunday at Los Balcones. I would like to pay tribute to Margaret for her service to God and his Church through all that she has done here over many years. Margaret will be greatly missed in this ministry. She returns to the UK on March 14 th but we look forward to seeing her again in the autumn. Thank you, Margaret, for your ministry and may God bless you. On Sunday 29 th April Bishop David will be coming to the Chaplaincy to celebrate the Holy Eucharist and the Sacrament of Confirmation for two adults, Hazel Merridew and Kathryn Moore, who are undergoing Confirmation preparation at the moment. Please do pray for Hazel and Kathryn as they make this important step in their lives of Christian discipleship and as they prepare to receive Holy Communion for the first time. Part of the preparation during Confirmation is preparation in how to receive Holy Communion correctly. The Church instructs us how we should do this and I am sure many of you will remember being trained how to receive the Blessed Sacrament in a worthy and proper manner. I believe it is good for us all to think about this from time to time. S. Cyril of Jerusalem, writing in the fourth century to the catechumens in Jerusalem, declared:

5 Thou hast heard the voice of him that calleth thee to communion in the holy mysteries and saith: Taste and see that the Lord is gracious. Come then and draw nigh, not with hands outspread, nor with fingers apart, but making thy left hand a throne for thy right, which will receive the King, in the hollow of thy hand take the Body of Christ. So these were some of the instructions given to those preparing to receive Holy Communion so that this most Holy Sacrament was received with due care and attention. In our reception of Holy Communion, in our making our Holy Communion, we should be careful to observe what Jesus said at the Last Supper and to fulfil his instruction: Take, eat and Drink this, all of you. The act of eating the Host (the name given to the consecrated bread) and drinking from the chalice (the common cup) are signs of our communion with Christ and with one another. The common cup (and our sharing in it) is a profound sign of our unity with Christ and our brothers and sisters. There have been times recently when for short periods of time (for various reasons) permission was given for the faithful to receive by intinction in England. However, that is no longer applicable. Intinction is fraught with difficulties the Host being dropped in the chalice, peoples fingers going into the consecrated wine, the Sacrament being dripped on the ground. Neither is it good for those who are gluten intolerant as they cannot receive from a chalice that has the Host repeatedly intincted into it. I know of two people unable to receive from the chalice in the Chaplaincy for this reason. If, for whatever reason, you do not wish to receive from the chalice (if you have a cold, for example) you are invited to receive the Host and then return to your place. Holy Communion is received still in all its fullness in this way. This is how Holy Communion is taken to the sick and housebound and this has been confirmed by Bishop David in correspondence. The metallic nature of the chalices means that germs do not harbour there. The chalice is wiped with the purificator each time. We do have people from other denominations in our Chaplaincy and other denominations have their own practices. However, just as we would respect the practices of other denominations, the celebrations of the Eucharist here are undertaken by priests of the Anglican Communion and within the Church of England. Just as I am preparing Kathryn and Hazel to make their Holy Communion for the first time, so I invite us all to think about the manner of making of our Holy Communion. As your Priest, that is one of my duties. To return to the fathers of the Church: S. Peter Chrysologus, 5 th century: Christ himself is the Bread that came down from heaven: daily he comes to the altar for heavenly food, and feeds and nourishes unto eternal life them that eat him. We pray that this Bread may be given us day by day until we come to enjoy it in the everlasting day. S. Cyril of Alexandria, 5 th century: Let us take the Body of him who is the Life and drink his holy Blood for the remission of sins and the receiving of immortality: believing the while that he abideth both Priest and Victim, that it is he who offers and is offered.
