1 E PARCHIAL NEWS ПАРХІЯЛЬНІ ВІСТІ EPARCHY OF SASKATOON Volume 10 Number 4 Christmas Edition Episcopal Letter of Greetings on Occasion of Nativity of Our Lord 2010 To Reverend Clergy, Religious, Seminarians and Faithful of Eparchy of Saskatoon: Христос Раждається!.. Christ Is Born! Славіте Його! Let us Glorify Him! Therefore Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, a young woman shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Emman u-el. He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse evil and choose good. Isaiah 7:14-15 How many of us wait for signs everyday? We make thousands of decisions, large and small, significant and insignificant, and we look for signs to help us make those decisions. We consult and pray, always seeking to do what is best. All of us, at one moment or anor, come to realize that perhaps we didn t see everything. We did what we could but re are so many or issues to consider. We muster reassurance, ask for forgiveness and/or celebrate our successes with those closest to us and move on to next decision. So goes cycle of reading signs around us. God graciously promises a sign through prophet Isaiah to Ahaz. It is a most profound sign! The impossible is made possible! The Virgin Mor gives birth to Jesus Christ! It is at once a moment of salvation for all as well as a sign. Humanity is redeemed! You and I, in Christ, are saved from our sin and from death. How do we enter into mystery, appreciate it, understand it better? December 2010 World Union of Catholic Women s Organization (WUCWO) Centenary General Assembly Jerusalem, October 5 11, 2010 You will be my witnesses Acts 1:8 What a privilege it was to represent our UCWLC at World Centenary General Assembly and a pilgrimage in Holy Land. Past President Luba Kowalchyk, Vice President Geraldine Koban and I were among 500 women from 60 countries. Our Assembly began on October 6, The opening Liturgy was held at St. Savior Church celebrated by Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem His Beatitude Fouad Twal. I was given privilege of carrying Cross in procession of clergy into church. Past President Luba carried a banner of Our Lady of Pochiav. All our sessions were held at Pontifical Institute of Notre Dame Center in Jerusalem. We are asked to look deeper than merely at surface. We must resist routine and dwell deeper. We are drawn by Holy Spirit to prayer so that this Good News enters depth of our souls. Through heartfelt participation in services our Ukrainian Catholic Church provides, we can touch on profound truth of Christ changing who we are. This is an ongoing transformation. Through quiet prayer before any act of charity, we can do what we do for Christ, despite how routine that charitable act normally is. We can face any challenge knowing Christ is with us. Our Study Days (Oct. 6,7,&8) that included lectures and discussions by renowned speakers, and Statutory Assembly, which was business session of assembly were held in mornings and afternoons were for guided tours to Holy Places in Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nazareth, and celebrations of Holy Eucharist and prayer. It was marvellous to see women of all ages filled with such passionate commitment. In name of Eparchy of Saskatoon, we send you greetings on this feast of Nativity of Christ, in hope of salvation He offers to all, and in recognition of many hazards and difficulties you find on your earthly journey. We greet elderly and shut-ins, who, due to physical limitations, cannot live life to its fullest. We greet sick and weak, in ir daily struggle to achieve good health. We greet those who for financial reasons live in doubt and uncertainty, searching for stable and secure homes. We greet parents who strive to raise ir children in a Christian manner in a world that ridicules ir faith. We greet young people who search for meaning and value to life, but are offered false hope and darkness by a selfish society. We greet children who long for understanding and love and may not always find it so readily. We greet members of armed forces who regularly put ir life in danger for common good. We greet our brors and sisters in Ukraine, who continue to struggle for a strong and democratic country. We greet all faithful of our Ukrainian Catholic Church, who strive to live out ir faithful lives and support our Church in times of change and uncertainty. Delegates were asked to prepare for General Assembly by reflecting on faithful witness of women, especially ir personal qualities, on Women of Old Testament, Women of New Testament, Canonized Saints and Modern Day Women. We were asked to reflect on role of women from time of founding of WUCWO through present day in respect to family, Church and society, also How do member organizations witness ir Catholic faith amidst such pressing challenges as moral, religious, political and economic issues? Receive God s gift, Jesus. In turn, be gift of Christ to ors. Emmanuel God is with us! Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel (God with us). MT 1:23 Throughout Study Days we attended lectures by renowned speakers. Florence Gillet, a French ologian spoke on Mary, testimony of God Love, yesterday and today, as inspiration and model for women of all time. Marguerite Peeters, Journalist and author spoke on Christian identity in a globalized world. Christine Vollmer de Marcellus, founder and president of Alliance for And Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth John 1:14 May Blessing of God-With-Us З нами Бог! fill your heart and hearts of those in your family with joy and gladness this Christmas. Many Blessings in New Year. Bishop Bryan J. 2 !POINTS TO PONDER! ---- Fr. Yurij ---- From EDITOR S DESK On November 26 in Regina we had privilege of witnessing a one man play on Holodomor Genocide. Fr. Edward Danylo Evanko crafted a superb script, painting vividly stark and horrifying conditions of holodomor. Emaciated hands stretching out for a crust of bread. Mors clutching ir dead infants to ir breasts. The horse drawn cart making its rounds everyday, stopping at each house with driver calling out Is anyone alive in re? If re was no answer he would go in and remove corpse, throw it on wagon and dump it in a pit outside of town. The story of a 4 year old girl who came to her neighbour s house saying that her mor wouldn t wake up. The neighbours checked and found her mor and her 7 year old son dead. An estimated 7-10 million Ukrainians died as a result of this murder in Rar unthinkable that this could happen in bread basket of Europe. Man s inhumanity to man. I don t think re was a dry eye in auditorium by time Fr. Evanko finished script and songs, and intoned Vichnaya Pamiat. He offered in summary this thought: if we don t remember victims and sing vichnaya pamiat, n who will? It is important to collective memory. Today in Ukraine efforts are being made by government to re-write this black mark of history, removing title GENOCIDE. A tragic event, no less, but certainly not genocide. Tell that to 7+ million who paid with ir lives. Myroslav Marynovych of Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, writes this in his RISU article Holodomor: Am I my brors keeper? The time has shown that we also must know who really is to blame. If we do not do that, communists will continue to wear robe of innocence deceiving people with ir seeming philanthropy. The Communist Cain must be publicly condemned for crime of Holodomor. Go to RISU website and read entire article. ( +Marynovych/39292/) But now from Christmas me. Imagine shepherds hurrying toward poor stable near royal city of Bethlehem, and watch how ir faces light up with joy. Above Star shines forth brightly, guiding from East Wise Men, who bring ir gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh for child who will be king. Amid se scenes let us be filled with faith and love; let us join in spirit with Holy Family, which continues to insire all Christian families to join with angels and shepherds in praising Savior of world. Wishing you abundant blessings at Christmas and throughout New Year. ХРИСТОС РАЖДАЄТЬСЯ! 3 times. We n preceded to Ein Karem, birthplace of St. John Baptist, and to see Visitation Church where Mary proclaimed her famous Magnificat. Our day ended with a banquet in Bethlehem. The next day everyone was departing for Tel Aviv or embark on optional tours. Eparchial News Christmas 2010 Canadian delegation at WUCWO Assembly Family, spoke on me, Forming Joyous Witnesses for Tomorrow, Today. Ludmilla Grygiel, has worked on marriage and family life as well as on Christian anthropology, spoke on The witness of feminine genius basis for mission to which God has called us. Ana Cristina Villa de Betancourt, responsible for Women s Section of pontifical Council for Laity, spoke on women Scripture whose lives were transformed by ir encounter with our Lord. We also had presentations by women living and working in Holy Land. Hanadi Soudah-Younan, an English professor from Bethlehem University, believes that as a Palestinian Christian and her work at University she fulfills her mission as a witness for Christ to both Christians and those of or faiths. Sr. Maria Grech, FMM, works in Franciscan Family Centre in Bethlehem. She described difficulty for families with high unemployment and no housing so this centre has started a Job-Creation project which is bringing respect and dignity to families. We also had an Interreligious panel by members of Focolare movement. They discussed difficulty living in an area where re is religious conflict. The Statutory Assembly (Oct. 9, 10, & 11) was business sessions of General Assembly. Accreditation for voting and Rules of Procedure was discussed. We heard reports from table officers and Regions. Spanish, French and English were languages that were used throughout days of Assembly. Translators were used simultaneously with speakers. Resolutions were passed. There were two candidates for position of President General. We heard ir speeches n election was held. Maria Giovanna Ruggieri from Italy is new President General of WUCWO. Congratulations to UCWLC Past President Luba Kowalchyk for being elected to WUCWO Board. Our first tour was a drive to Mount of Olives for a spectacular view of Jerusalem. Then we proceeded to Garden of Gethsemane to visit Church of all Nations. Nations that provided funds for construction of this church have Lord s Prayer in ir native language painted on walls. The olive trees in Garden are very old and reputed to have been started from original trees. On both sides of road to Bethlehem were vast rocky pastures where shepherds tend ir flocks of sheep and goats. This area is called Shepherds Fields. It is here where angels announced birth of Jesus. Then we continued to Bethlehem to visit Nativity Church which was built by Constantine in 4 th century over traditional Grotto of Jesus birth. We visited Manger, Grotto of St. Jerome, and Church of St. Carine which was built over cave where St. Jerome lived while translating scripture from Greek to Latin. The thirty-one delegates from Canada brought school supplies which we presented to a Palestinian Catholic School Administrator. We brought as much as our luggage could handle. Plans are in motion to connect with this school on a regular basis. On our next tour we entered Old City of Jerusalem. We visited Church of St. Anne which was built on site of Mary s birthplace. Alongside Church were archelogical diggings of Pool of Besda. Every Friday Franciscan s lead a procession along Via Dolorosa ( Way of Sorrows), route that cross-bearing Jesus followed from site of his condemnation (Praetorium) to site of his crucifixion and grave. Each event on his walk has a chapel commemorating it, comprising 14 Stations of Cross. The site of Jesus crucifixion is area identified as Calvary within Church of Holy Sepulchre. A Greek Orthodox altar stands directly over rocky outcrop on which cross of Christ is believed to have stood. The rock can be touched through a hole in floor under altar. The Tomb of Christ is also located in this church. Pilgrims can see place where Jesus body was laid as well as a piece of stone that was rolled away. On our final day of Assembly, after closing ceremony and liturgy we drove to Mt. Zion to visit Cenacle, place in which Christ celebrated Last Supper. The Franciscans have a very small Church where mass can be celebrated in memory of Last Supper. We also visited basilica of Dormition of Our Lady and Church of St. Peter in Gallicantu where Peter denied Jesus three Many of us took extended two-day tour to Galilee that had been arranged by WUCWO. On route to Galilee we experienced mineral waters and mud of Dead Sea, lowest spot on face of earth. After barrenness of Desert of Judea, studded with armed checkpoints and small settlements of Bedouins, we arrived at oldest city on earth, Jericho, an oasis in desert. This area produces fresh fruit and vegetables all year round. Jericho dates, bananas and citrus fruit are especially famous. Water for irrigation is supplied by Jordan River and underground springs. High above Jericho is harsh bare Mount of Temptation. Continuing north through Jordan Valley to Yardenit where Jordan River flows out of Sea of Galilee, is site for baptism of Jesus. The site sits on banks of Jordan River between magnificent eucalyptus trees and natural river flora. At Ginosar, we had opportunity to see a 1 st century boat that was recently discovered in mud, displayed in a museum, which may be similar to one Jesus used. To complete day, we had a ride on a boat on Sea of Galilee. Capernaum was home of our Lord during His ministry. Here Jesus chose his first four disciples, Peter, Andrew, James and John. Located prominently in ruins of Capernaum is an excavation known as House of Peter. Underneath modern church at this site are 5 th and 4 th -century churches all built over ruins of a first-century church. The Church of Primacy of St. Peter, on shore of Sea of Galilee, occupies site where Jesus appeared for third time after His Resurrection. Next, we drove up to Mount of Beatitudes to visit site of Sermon on Mount, beginning with beatitudes. The mountain is topped by a Catholic chapel. The church s octagonal shape depicts eight beatitudes. The seven virtues are also depicted by symbols in pavement around altar. Our final tour day was in Nazareth and area. Nazareth is home of largest Arab community inside of Israel. The city is dotted with churches, convents and monasteries that have been built since 6 th century. The most known landmark is Basilica of Annunciation. The church covers traditional site of Virgin Mary s house, Virgin s cave where archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary. St. Joseph s Church is built over cave thought to be Joseph s house. It is believed that Jesus probably lived in Nazareth for about twenty-five years. Our final excursion was to Mount Tabor. The steep road is accessible only by taxis. The beautiful church is surrounded by ruins of monastery of almost 1000 years ago. The Basilica of Transfiguration commemorates miraculous event recounted by Matw. Our pilgrimage to Holy Land is almost indescribable Each one of us must have had a different reaction to different sites. Two memorable events for me were procession along Via Dolorosa and Palm Sunday Walk that culminated in Garden of Gethsemane. But, most memorable event was on Mount Tabor where I came upon a chapel where a Ukrainian Catholic Liturgy was sung. I came just in time to hear reading of Gospel. There were places that we didn t get to visit as time was short, but those that we did visit and enjoyed, we were sobered by ever-present division in country, politically and physically. Never in danger, we crossed and re-crossed Israeli checkpoints on our way in and out. It does cause great concern for our Christian brors and sisters, and access to sacred sites in near future. Submitted by Gloria L. Leniuk, National UCWLC President The new Communications Office was launched in September of One major project for 2011 will be a new and expanded Eparchial web site. Look for it early in new year. Thanks to everyone for your great cooperation and support. God is with us! May this promise of hope and joy be in our hearts every day of coming year. Jerry Wasylow Eparchial Communications We give gifts at Christmas in humble imitation of gift that God gave us. A man told what happened to him one Christmas eve when he was a boy. After he and his sisters had opened all ir presents, his far said. Of all presents you received tonight, I want you to decide which one you liked very best and set it in front of you. When this was done, far continued. Now I want each of you to think of someone less fortunate than you and not getting presents as you are, and tomorrow we will have fun of delivering to this person presents you have chosen as very best. This man said he could never forget this experience. It taught him what Christmas was all about - when God gave to mankind very best he had. Let us think about gifts we can give, not only at Christmas but throughout year.

5 A Critical Time for Musée Ukraina Museum First, some background information: In 1952 late Bishop Andrew Roborecki asked Ukrainian Catholic Women s League of Canada (UCWLC) to consider an idea of planning for and creating a museum in Eparchy of Saskatoon, and at an Eparchial meeting on December 7, 1953 UCWLC delegates approved proceeding with his request and work to make his dream come true became a reality and a responsibility. At first artifacts were housed in a room at Sheptysky Institute and remained re until May 22, 1966, when Museum of Ukrainian Culture began to operate from Prosvita Hall at 202 Avenue M South, Saskatoon. The property was owned by St. George s Ukrainian Catholic Cadral and was generously offered to Museum rentfree. The name was eventually changed to Musée Ukraina Museum to reflect and celebrate multicultural aspect of Canadian society. The Museum operated from that location for over 40 years until 2007, at which time artifacts and collection were packed and moved into a small leased property allowing Cadral parish to proceed with ir building plans. The present storage facility has no room for exhibits or public viewing. What has been happening presently? Fundraising continued with a goal of constructing a new building on land that was purchased and paid for in 2003 for $100, with Museum funds. In 2007 an application to Provincial Government s Building Communities Program was successful and $534, was allocated for construction of new building. In addition, at 2007 Eparchial Convention held in Yorkton Bishop Michael Wiwchar launched a fundraising campaign targeting Ukrainian Catholic community in our province. This three year campaign netted over $300, ! A year later Worobetz Foundation granted $350, towards creation of Dr. Stephen and Michelene Worobetz Archive Centre which was to be a part of new Museum building. In 2010, original building plans were reviewed. The decision was made to downsize project by 35% by removing basement, modifying design, and investigating some new construction methods that would reduce costs. A Building Advisory Committee was formed to help with se decisions and plans. This Committee consisted of Architect, Maurice Soulodre; Paul Machibroda, Geotechnical Engineer; Bill Muzyka, retired businessman; Ron Chelak, former Board Member; and current Board Members - Patricia Mialkowsky and Martin Hryniuk. Upon completion of revised building plans, Board endorsed next step of hiring a Project Manager. Six construction companies were invited to submit ir presentations for this project. Through a structured evaluation process Building Advisory Committee n chose a Project Manager that would best meet needs of Museum. The architectural drawings were furr revised. The process of tendering and construction phases was reviewed. Clearly building in phases was an option that Board felt would best meet our financial situation. The main floor could be finished and second floor only to point where an occupancy permit could be obtained. The collection would be moved out of leased facility and storage would be on second floor. The Museum could function as a museum with some galleries available for public viewing and a gift shop on main floor. Aggressive fundraising would continue for funds to finish second floor. A rough estimate of Phase 1 project was presented to Board of Directors for approval. The estimated budget for completing Phase 1 came Eparchial News Christmas 2010 page 5 in at $2.3M. At Board of Directors meeting held September 21, a motion was made to proceed to Tender to validate costs, ensuring we have a clear understanding of what this project will cost (11 for, 1 against). An application for a Building Permit was sent to City Hall. The Museum is not obliged to accept Building Permit. The Museum has $1.6M in capital and pledges (this includes Provincial Grant). His Excellency Bishop Bayda has communicated his strong support for preserving artifacts and history that enriches our Ukrainian Catholic identity for future generations. He and Eparchial Financial Council have also expressed concern that new Museum building project be based on sound financial planning and to this end Board hired a competent financial planner, who has devised a suitable financial plan for this project. The Museum Board feels a strong responsibility to ensuring collection is maintained and protected. Storage and protection of Museum s collection at this time is costing approximately $20, a year. The collection is not accessible to public under se circumstances. Fundraising by loyal volunteers has been going on for more than 20 years with goal of having a suitable place to share and protect collection. Generous donors have stepped forward in hopes of making new Museum building a reality, valuing importance of what has been so generously donated to Museum s collection. The Museum Board of Directors has worked very hard to be accountable and transparent. In planning for new Museum building fund raising committee has worked diligently, not only raising funds for building, but also inviting donors to establish endowments. Currently se endowments number six. The Board knows sustainability is key to success of future of Museum and every effort must be made to grow se endowments and find or sources of support. The Board strives to work with all members of our Eparchial community ensuring Museum will continue to be a valuable asset to our Eparchy. According to its Constitution, Board is made up of 51% UCWLC members and Bishop of Eparchy joins Board as an Ex-Officio member. The Museum has worked with all members of our Ukrainian Catholic community and has been supported by UCWLC, Ukrainian Catholic Brorhood of Canada, Knights of Columbus, faithful of Eparchy of Saskatoon and by numerous individuals within and beyond our provincial borders. What does future hold? A letter from Ukrainian Catholic Episcopal Corporation of Saskatchewan s solicitor dated October 15, 2010 was received by Musée Ukraina Museum Inc. The letter stated that Episcopal Corporation wished to transfer title to land it has been holding in trust for Museum - to Museum. The letter also stated that primary objective of Episcopal Corporation in transferring title at this time is to ensure that independence of two corporations is maintained. The implication is that Museum would no longer be considered an Eparchial project. The Museum wishes to point out that at no time did it attempt to jeopardize any fundraising Eparchy was or will be conducting for ir needs. At Museum Board Meeting on November 20 in Saskatoon, construction cost for Phase 1 was presented. The Tender came in at $2.6M. As a result of that Board meeting, Board of Directors voted in favour of motion to accept Episcopal Corporation s offer to transfer title to Museum and also to proceed with construction of Phase 1. A ground breaking ceremony will be held December 9, 2010 at 1pm on site of new Museum building Avenue M South, Saskatoon. submitted by Patricia Mialkowsky on behalf of Museum s 2010 Board of Directors Rachel s Vineyard offers healing and hope Rachel s Vineyard is a ministry offering hope and healing to those who are suffering after-effects of abortion. After an abortion, both women and men often suffer emotional or spiritual distress even years later, says Bonnie Cameron, who coordinates Rachel s Vineyard retreats in Saskatchewan. The after-effects of abortion can include bouts of crying, depression, eating disorders, guilt, depression, intense grief, sadness, anger, emotional numbness, lowered self esteem, drug and alcohol disorders, flashbacks, nightmares, suicidal urges, fear of pregnancy or pregnant women, anxiety, panic attacks, repeated abortions or crisis pregnancies, difficulty with relationships, an inability to forgive oneself or ors, and fear of punishment from God. Rachel s Vineyard weekends are a beautiful opportunity for any person who has struggled with emotional or spiritual pain of abortion, said Bonnie Cameron. The weekend is designed to help participants experience mercy and compassion of God, she said. It s also an opportunity to surface and release repressed feelings of anger, shame, guilt and grief. Each weekend is run by caring volunteers. Many of facilitators have suffered same loss. There is also a professional counselor and a priest at every weekend. Rachel s Vineyard provides a non-judgmental, safe environment, stressed Cameron. Past participants have testified to transformation y experienced through Rachel s Vineyard, describing how y were able to move from pain of past into hope and love. You are able to express sadness, grief and shame in company of or women and men feeling very much same. You are able to turn this pain into hope with help of nurturing counselors and supportive caretakers. You are not rushed or hurried, but given time to reflect and become open to healing process gradually, stated one testimonial. I experienced a great inner healing as a result of attending Rachel s Vineyard weekend, wrote anor participant. I highly recommend this program to anyone who has felt void and shame of abortion experience. It is wonderful to forgive yourself, find unconditional love of Christ and grieve loss of your little child. Anor participant wrote: I never knew my wife had suffered so much pain over an abortion she had before I met her. It was a real eye opener to attend Rachel s Vineyard weekend with her and offer my support in an area of her life where re was so much secret grief. Our marriage has truly been blessed. We are closer now than we have ever been. Anor man reflected: After struggling alone for years with guilt, shame and remorse of my involvement with my girlfriends decision to abort our child, I finally found a ministry that recognized my need to get help. Rachel s Vineyard provided a place where I could voice my pain and loss. The acceptance of women re was especially helpful, because I felt I had hurt my girlfriend so badly that all women would despise me if y knew what I had done. Their understanding and acceptance helped me to move furr in forgiving myself and helped me to love ors in my life in a deeper way. Founded by Dr. Theresa Burke and Kevin Burke, Rachel s Vineyard is a ministry of Priests for Life. In Saskatchewan, Rachel s Vineyard retreats are held in fall and in spring. The next weekend will be offered Friday, April 1 to Sunday, April 3, For information call or bacameron@sasktel.net -- confidentiality is respected in all cases. 6 St. Michael s Camp 2010 A Grateful Heart is A Happy Heart Slava Isusu Khrystu! St. Michael s Camp at Madge Lake in Duck Mountain Provincial Park is a Ukrainian Catholic Camp. We believe in engaging our campers in spiritual, cultural, social, physical, intellectual, moral and recreational activities in order to provide a fun spiritually nourishing and memorable camp experience. This summer we ran two camps. A camp for teens aged 13-16, followed by two weeks of youth camp for children aged Teen camp was full of bouncing teenagers and fascinating activities for five days! Our campers ranged in age, experience and faith which brought many aspects to group this summer. Campers were able to grow spiritually with guidance from Far Basil Malowany, Far Ivan Nahachewky, and Far Jeffrey Stephaniuk. The various clergy provided different activities and liturgical services for campers to participate in; one that will stick in minds of many is service out on lake in canoes! They also had chance to learn from or staff members, Director Lyrissa Kuschak, and young adults Darja Besermenji and Synthia Earle. Campers followed ir respective routes from Regina, Saskatoon, Yorkton, Foam Lake, Rama, Prince Albert, Winnipeg, MB and Camrose, AB to find common interests and familiar faces at St. Michael s Camp. This year our program was of spontaneous nature with clergy coming and going and unpredictable wear. We did some traditional service projects including preparing grounds and buildings for Youth Camp and traveling to Benito to provide some TLC to a cemetery in need. Campers also had more than ample time to do fun things a summer camp should entail beach time, canoeing, kayaking, outdoor games with special treat of swimming and hot-tubbing at Duck Mountain Lodge as a reward for ir hard work! Youth camp is a very different program from teen program. Major differences are many more bodies, many more structured activities, a routine and of course none of this would be possible without many more staff. This summer our counsellors came to us from Regina (Adam Krammer, Melanie Krammer, Kelsey Behm, Nathan Labatt and Kyle Leitch) and Saskatoon (Danielle Kuschak, Darja Besermenji, Olena Olenick). Or key team members this year included Far Basil Malowany of Kamsack, Sister Janet Kozak of Winnipeg and Director Lyrissa Kuschak of Foam Lake. Each staff member had individual talents and skills to share with campers and fellow staff members. This year we had a happy mix of veteran staff members to teach St. Mike s ways to our new staff members! As with teen camp, campers followed ir respective routes to find familiar faces, meet new friends and take in what camp would have to offer in 2010! This years campers came from Yorkton, Willowbrook, Foam Lake, Melville, Ituna, Regina, Saskatoon, Dauphin, MB, Calgary, AB and Paris France! At St. Michael s Camp we pride ourselves on our unique atmosphere, as we focus on campers and staffs faith in many dimensions. We welcome campers of different religious backgrounds and toger we grow in a spiritually rich environment with spotlight on Ukrainian Catholic traditions. Everyday you would see a routine of campers awakening and crawling out of dorms to get mselves ready for day! We would start with a Morning Prayer and breakfast and n straight to church to kick off morning with Divine Liturgy celebrated by Far Basil. Campers n began rotating through activities in one hour time blocks until lunch; some of activities included arts and crafts, canoeing and kayaking, outdoor games and swimming lessons. After a few activities everyone had worked up an appetite just in time for lunch! From lunch campers packed ir beach bags and headed to one of park s public beaches for some fun in sun. Once mid afternoon hit it was time to travel back to camp for one last activity, a catechism session, praying rosary and n to dining hall for supper. Evenings were not any less busy than days, but campers were kept toger in large group to add some spice to big group games! Every day ended with an active campfire and solemn evening prayer. Campers would n follow light of moon to ir respective dorms to get some rest before next dynamic day began. A highlight this year for both teen and youth camps was to make Pysanka or Ukrainian Easter Eggs. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (with funding from Sask Lotteries) made this possible by providing a grant to be used for cultural activities for children. Every camper during each week of camp had chance to make an egg. Not only did we use keeska, bees wax and egg dye, but we also learned about symbolism of different patterns and colors. The activity was great for our rainy days (which we weren t short of this year!). Once again we had a successful summer and look forward to next year s familiar faces and new faces. Our program is run by a Board of Directors Ukrainian Catholic Church Camps of Saskatchewan Inc. and is significantly funded by donations from individuals and organizations. We extend our gratitude to all of those who assist in preparation and implementation of program. In many ways it s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. The decorated trees and bright lights, that are only associated with this time of year, are literally sprouting up all over and store hours have been extended, in some cases round clock, to facilitate an anticipated rush on ir wares. And, plans are being made and shared, for exotic get- always, to far off places, where expectations run high for a happy holiday. Unfortunately, for far too many, this holiday hoopla is devoid of even slightest mention, or notice, of what Christmas is all about; and, we should be asking ourselves why this is, and what can we do about it. As Christians we are called to follow Jesus Christ, proclaiming and defending His glory as Son of God and Saviour of our souls. As Christians we believe that Jesus Christ became man and was born of a Virgin Mor, Mary, here on earth, in Bethlehem. As Christians we celebrate birthday of Jesus Christ on Christmas day. As Christians we, refore, should know and show, that only reason for Christmas is Jesus Christ. As Christians it is our duty and responsibility to Keep Christ in Christmas. And, in so doing be a living example to ors, just like Jesus Christ. Let us follow brightly lit star to Lord s birthplace, rar than succumb to glitter of marketplace. Let us visibly and audibly proclaim good news of His birth, rar than just quietly keeping it to ourselves as if afraid to stand up or ashamed to speak out. Let us actively promote love and peace that Christ brought and taught, rar than just passively pleasing our palates while ors suffer and starve. Let us gar as family in our Far s house and receive life- giving grace of His Son, Jesus Christ, rar than lifelessly lazing on some foreign beach under sun. Let us in se, and all ways, Keep Christ In Christmas. In all our Christmas celebrations and encounters let us remember that Jesus Christ came to us, here on earth, as a small, new- born baby who was completely dependent upon ors for tender, loving, dedicated and directed care. His appearance, in this natural way, was not without purpose or plan. His purpose was to lead way to God and plan for doing so was through living example. His homelessness was an expression of true humility, while His dependency reminds us of how we are to unconditionally respond to needs of ors, as children of same Far. And, since Jesus Christ is present in each and everyone of us we are to approach our neighbour as if, in fact, we were approaching Him, with all tenderness, patience and love befitting a new- born child. To you, and through you to your family and loved ones, I extend my prayer- filled best wishes for a Blessed Christmas and a Happy, Holy, New Year. May Infant King, Jesus Christ, be ever present in your lives and works. Christ Is Born! Sister Theodosia Dear UCWLC Members: May light of God s love shine in you heart and in your home this Christmas Season and all through year. National UCWLC Executive

8 Bishop Andrew Roborecki Foundation supporting our seminarians and priests The Bishop Andrew Roborecki Foundation was established in 1982 as a way for faithful in our Eparchy to make donations for financial support of our seminarians. We want to take this opportunity to thank all those who have financially supported Foundation in 2010 and during past 28 years. We are living in a time when all things religious are being attacked, challenged, discouraged or swept away. For example, in countries like England, surveys show that over 50% consider mselves aistic. Christianity is dropping out of favour throughout Europe. We must continue to strengn our Catholic Church with well educated Clerical Leaders who need our financial support and above all, our prayers. Parish Priests are needed. They confer Holy Mysteries on us for our salvation. They enrich our lives by guiding us in prayer and setting our moral and ethical compass in right direction as we travel our faith journey. The month of January has been designated by Bishop Bryan Bayda, CSsR for our annual appeal and we encourage all Faithful to continue making ir donations through ir Parishes. Please make your donation to Foundation as follows: a) Members of a Parish should make ir donations payable to Parish, and identify as donation to Roborecki Foundation. The Parish will total se donations and remit one cheque payable to Foundation, along with a list of all donors and amounts donated. This should n be forwarded directly to Foundation at 214 Avenue M South, Saskatoon, SK. S7M 2K4. To facilitate this process, we recommend that in month of January, each Parish include in its Sunday envelope package a donation envelope designated specifically for Foundation. Should your parish not have a special envelope, simply use your own Parish envelope and identify it as Donation to Roborecki Foundation and place with your regular Sunday collections. b) Non members, organizations or businesses should mail ir donation directly to Foundation at above address. c) For Bequests or large donations, please contact contact one of Trustees. The Audited 2010 Financial Statement showing all donations will be published in 2011 Spring Edition of Eparchial News and also on Eparchial Website Roborecki Foundation. André Lalach Phone: alalach@stmcollege.ca Office: St. Thomas More College, University of Saskatchewan Sister Metrophane Anne Uchacz, SSMI Sister Metrophane, died in Mary Immaculate Hospital Long Term Care, Mundare, AB on Monday, November 03, 2010, in her 93 rd year and 75 th year in Religious Life. Anne (Sister Metrophane) was born on June 23, 1918, in Ituna, SK. Her far, Sam (Simeon) had emigrated from village of Kopychyntsi, near Ternopil in Ukraine in 1912, and settled near Moose Jaw, SK. Her mor, Mary (Kuzyk), also from same village, had emigrated to Canada in Sam and Mary were married in 1914 in Moose Jaw. In 1918 y settled on a farm near Ituna, SK. Here y raised a family of fifteen children, two of whom died in infancy. They rejoiced that Sacred Heart parish had been founded in Ituna a year after ir arrival, and that Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate began mission work in The Sisters opened St. Ann s School in ir convent, where Anne received her education. Having been nurtured in a life of faith by her family and parish, Anne responded to God s call, entering Novitiate of Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate in Mundare, AB, on February 06, Sister Metrophane made first profession of vows on August 12, 1938, and final profession, August 15, The Sisters Servants remain grateful to faithful pioneers of Ituna, who have given seven of ir daughters to serve Lord as Sisters Servants. In her 75 years as a Sister Servant, Sister Metrophane wholeheartedly served her religious community, church and people in Canada, USA and Mackwiller, France. She served ten years at Sister Servant missions in following American states: Missouri, New York and Pennsylvania, and taught summer catechism in North Dakota. In Canada she served in Sister Servant missions in Thunder Bay (Fort William), ON and in Montreal. She served in following missions in Alberta: Mundare, Calgary, Vegreville and Edmonton and in Saskatchewan, in Saskatoon, Ituna and Regina. In , she was missioned at a youth hostel in Mackwiller, France, providing meals and hospitality for those who came re. She also catechized and served as a cantor. During this time she also assisted for a short time at Sister Servant missions in Munich, Germany, and Lourdes, France. Sister Metrophane, a devoted and loyal SSMI, generously performed domestic duties, prepared altar bread and sewed church vestments. Her special gift was to serve in parishes, assisting pastors in whatever way she could. She was especially grateful to Redemptorist Fars of Ituna where she grew up. She was edified by ir dedication and dedicated service of ir flock. She loved working with young, instructing m and not so young in ir religious and Ukrainian heritage: preparing countless children for First Holy Communion, animating Children of Mary and Altar Servers, teaching summer catechism and Ukrainian in rural parishes and at camps (mainly in Saskatchewan), serving as cantor and children s choir director, conducting Ukrainian School. She also worked with and assisted UCWLC and parish Sisterhoods, Brorhoods and Knights of Columbus. With great devotion she cared for cleanliness and beauty of church sanctuary. Many lonely and forgotten looked forward to her visits, bringing bereaved, sick and elderly healing and peace. Sister Metrophane taught Ukrainian in Catholic School system in Regina, serving as an accredited teacher. One of Sister Metrophane s greatest joys was to visit in 1974 village and home that her parents had left when immigrating to Canada, meeting her relatives and seeing Ukraine, which she so loved. Since it was Soviet Ukraine that she visited, she experienced religious persecution first hand, an experience that filled her deep gratitude for freedom to worship we enjoy in Canada. While she was missioned in Europe in 1979, she had anor opportunity to visit her relatives in Ukraine. She also was delighted to visit our Sisters Servants, who were underground. This was truly an inspiring and memorable encounter. She had anor opportunity to visit Lourdes and Rome, where she was thrilled to have an audience with Pope John Paul II. Sister Metrophane was truly grateful for gift of family. She was thankful for her good and loving parents who instilled in all ir children love of God and His Holy Church. Sister Metrophane tried to find time to be with her many siblings with ir children and families, sharing in ir joys and sorrows, visiting and communicating with m when possible. She appreciated ir efforts to host family get-togers, which enriched and strengned family bonds. In ir difficulties, she encouraged her family members to put ir trust in Lord and our Heavenly Mor. She continuously reassured m of her prayerful support and love. The funeral Divine Liturgy was celebrated in St. Joseph s Home Chapel on Monday, November 8. The main celebrant was Bishop David Motiuk, assisted by Basilian Fars Ignatius Holowaychuk and Vincent Prychidko. Interment was at Ss Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church Cemetery. May memory of Sister Metrophane be eternal. Vichnaya Pamyiat! Pilgrimage cont d this pilgrimage for me. Their love and dedication to Blessed Vasyl and Holy Martyrs, church and people of Ukraine totally moved me as we visited places where y lived, preached, suffered, died and were buried. The sufferings y endured and ir faith in God has left an imprint on my heart and soul that I will treasure and remember always. The churches we visited and celebrated Liturgies and or services, as well as information and history that y shared with us has, made an impact on my prayer life and has given me a new outlook on life. I now take time to make room for God s presence in my daily life. Being able to celebrate Divine Liturgy in apartment in Lviv where Blessed Vasyl lived from 1955 to time of his final arrest in 1969, singing and praising in full voices, where at one time Liturgies were celebrated in hushed voices and priests were ordained in secret, was overpowering, especially since I believe that it was through prayers to Blessed Vasyl and his intervention that my grandson s heart condition was healed. Places like Zamartynivska Prison & monument where Blessed Kovalyk was imprisoned and crucified, as well as UPA museum where many innocent people were tortured and died for ir faith and country, was overwhelming and very difficult to absorb, but secured for me great love and strong faith se people had. They faced ir sufferings and tortures, embracing ir crosses, and did not give in or abandon ir faith or ir love for Christ and Ukrainian Catholic Church. Conclusion pg 12

A motion was made by Philip Kotylak that if Fr. Tylewski will be coming to our Church for services, n he will refuse to pay his membership fees and ors agreed with him that y too would not pay ir membership fees if he came to have services here. Therefore, it went to a vote and was revealed that more than half of members present, 12 votes, were opposed to Fr. Tylewski coming and would not fulfill ir financial obligations. It was decided to write bishop to request a different priest. The reason for this request is that Fr. Tylewski treated his parishioners inhumanely and called m pigs during his sermons in Church. The meeting was left unfinished. We wrote to bishop for a different priest and received a reply, but not answer that we were hoping for. We wrote again about same thing and didn t even receive a response. The 14 th of February, 1937 After Divine Liturgy, minutes of annual meeting were read in presence of priest and 38 members. Far Tylewski n asked who was at meeting and who voted against priest. Unfortunately, none of members present revealed anything. It was n agreed that no one was against priest. Far Tylewski n accepted to continue to serve our parish for 14 d and travel for 4 d for a total of 18 dollars. It was n moved that parish Mission take place no later than July 10. All were in favour. The remaining policies will be same as last year. July 25 The meeting was opened by chair, John Dusyk, with 30 members present. The meeting was called at request of members. The reason was that we have insufficient funds to pay priest. Danylo Romanow made motion that we pay priest 10 dollars for each Divine Liturgy which includes his travel, seconded by M. Pastuch. The vote was unanimous. Josef Chay moved that we pay priest 14 dollars but no one seconded motion. Stifan Kotylak moved that parish send money collected for bishop directly to Bishop s Chancery. All were in favour. Danylo Romanow closed meeting. September 14 A meeting of Church committee was held in home of Mr. John Dusyk. The reason was to discuss church books that, as far as we know, mysteriously disappeared from church. However, a few days later, book was returned by Fr. Tylewski. It was n moved that we buy three (3) books for church: a marriage register, a funeral register and a book for Wakes (or all night vigils), which will cost $8.50 for all three (3). The committee members were all in favour. September 14 A meeting of Church committee was held in home of Hryhori Romanow with 9 members present. Mr. Petro Stepanski neglected to mention that he had a bill for $4.00. The committee accepted it. Michailo Sydorko agreed to pay up his membership in full for year For year 1937 he explained that it was very far for him to travel and gave $3.00 toward 1937 fees. Michailo Romanow also agreed to pay his dues from 1929 up to January 1, 1934, for a total amount owing of $ The meeting was adjourned. Signed: John Dusyk, Wasyl Procyk Fr. A. W. Fyk Cendiac, Sask, 13 th day of December 1937 The church general meeting was held with 24 members present in Greek Catholic National Hall at 1 o clock in afternoon. General income was $ and expenses were $419.34, leaving in treasury Mister Hryhori Romanow moved that last year s executive be thanked for all ir hard work, seconded by Michailo Kotylak. All in favour. Next were elections for upcoming year Josif Chay moved that committee stay same for 1938, seconded by Michailo Pastuch. Stefan Procyk moved that re be a new committee, seconded by John Hrycak. A vote was taken. To keep old executive, 14 votes, for a new executive, 8. Therefore, old executive will remain in place for It was agreed by all that we thank executive for ir continued service. There were two new members that joined parish for year They are Mykolai Melnyk and Wasyl Melnyk. The parishioners agreed that we invite Most Reverend Bishop to our parish for Feast Day of Descent of Holy Spirit (Pentecost). The priest agreed with parishioners and parish agreed with him that we have 12 services a year at a cost of $15.00 for each time. The priest, Fr. Fyk, also offered to come one time for nothing. Danko Romaniw will look after picking up priest Fr. Fyk from station and returning him and give him room and board, for a sum of $4.00 each time. Danylo Romaniw and parish mutually agreed. The diaks, Wasyl Stepanski and Michailo Baran and John Kaczmar agreed to sing for a cost of.50 cents, toger $1.50. It was also passed that Fr. Bridegrooms of parish are to pay one dollar prior to wedding and 25 cents for each person. Non members are to pay two dollars prior to wedding and 25 cents for each person. The members of this parish are obliged to give $1.00 dollar a year for bishop. A cemetery plot is free of charge for those members who have fulfilled all ir obligations. Non members must have permission of parish council. (no signatures) Cendiac, Sask. On 18 th day of December, 1937, a meeting was held in home of Wasyl Procyk with 10 members present. Mister Hryhori Romaniw moved that funds that were borrowed by hall from church be paid off for year 1936, seconded by Mr. John Hrycak. For year 1937 church committee agreed to give hall 25 percent in accordance with minutes of hall. to be continued

In 2011 all parishes in Eparchy of Saskatoon will be eligible to apply for a grant of up to $500 for a parish project or initiative which will contribute to local needs of church community or cemetery. Particular attention will be given to rural parishes in Eparchy. Our local churches give us spiritual nourishment in present; cemeteries are filled with our beloved deceased from past generations, to whom we owe everything in present. Ukrainian Catholic sacred spaces in our province parishes and cemeteries deserve our attention and support. Some examples of projects which might be considered are: initiatives for upkeep or maintenance of sacred space (church or cemetery) initiatives which promote liturgical worship in a parish projects which bring people toger in ir community for a spiritual or educational purpose improvements to local church records or archives resources to document events from past or present, in order to create a living record of church s history (photo journals, web projects, cemetery archives projects) The aim of this grant initiative is to have funds remain in local church community. Examples of initiatives which would not be considered for funding are those involving travel costs, clergy stipends, or initiatives which are established by Eparchy. Why is this so? It made me realize how simple things made those children happy, and made me rethink what and where I had been putting my priorities with my own children and grandchildren. Places that we visited like Bila Kernitzia Shrine in Shuparka, pilgrimage experience in Zarvanytsia, celebrating with over 800,000 pilgrims, and pilgrimage site at Radkovets, blessed me with many gifts, graces and healings. However, one of greatest impacts for me from this pilgrimage came from Road to Emmaus experience in Kamianitz Podilsk. When I was facing many questions and doubts as to where God was in my life and why I was here, and as I was going to pray rosary I was joined on this walk by a fellow pilgrim. There my spiritual journey truly began and n continued to grow throughout remainder of pilgrimage and continues today. The burning from within when praying rosary, scripture readings, liturgies, chanting Psalms and prayers came alive with renewed spirit and meaning. But God was not done with me yet. As we continued on our pilgrimage to Yaremche, one morning as we prayed rosary we walked to a little wooden chapel. As we finished praying, I looked up and behind altar was Icon Not Painted by Human Hands. As I gazed upon this icon, eyes of icon began to move in a circular motion as if searching for someone, and n rested on me and I heard words Where have you been my child? I thought I was hearing things and looked at my prayer partner, but once again I heard those words and was drawn to those eyes. The warmth and peace I felt within I knew that I had found my missing link. We came upon this icon at a second place a few days later at chapel of Sisters of St. Joseph in Lviv. As I gazed at eyes of icon y did not search long and words this time were so gentle You have found me my child. The second last day of our pilgrimage, we once again came upon this icon, this time at wooden church at Sobor in Kyiv. The icon was on back wall of choir loft. As I venerated and prayed before icon, eyes were so soft and warm and words I heard were I am with you always. I felt a peace and warming within me as I have never experienced. Before leaving Ukraine we were able to find this icon at Pecherska Lavra in Kyiv, and I was able to bring it home with me, and I keep it close to me. I cannot explain all that happened to me; all I know is that so many things came alive for me, and as a result, has had an overpowering effect on how I want to live my life and how important having love and presence of God, faith and prayer is in my daily life. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity that became for me, a rewarding and fulfilling experience that I will always treasure. My spiritual journey did not end when I left Ukraine; this time seed has been planted in fertile soil of our ancestors and our Holy Martyrs, and continues to be nurtured and to blossom upon returning home. I would encourage ors to go on a Blessed Velychkovsky pilgrimage to Ukraine. Let go, and let God take you on a truly wonderful and amazing experience. It will open your eyes, heart and soul to lives of our Holy Martyrs; how y lived, suffered and gave ir lives for glory of God without hesitation. How through intercession of Martyrs, y can influence our lives, and help us to rethink what is truly important in our lives and what our focus could and should be on. I truly experienced walking on holy ground at many of places we visited and prayed at, and witnessed faith of people that was so very inspiring and uplifting and that has made a lifelong imprint on my heart and soul. It has shown me importance of embracing my cross, as it was given to me by God, and because it is way to Kingdom.
