2 CHURCH OF THE ANNUNCIATION, PARAMUS Lifelong Faith Formation In today s Gospel reading we hear Jesus compassion and healing of the sick. We also hear the importance that Jesus placed on prayer in His daily life no matter how busy or how important His work was. To make time, He rose early in the morning, went to a deserted place, and removed himself from crowds. During this prayer time we hear that Jesus found guidance and direction from God. This is a great example for us. No matter how busy we are or how important the things we do are, we also need to make time to pray. When we find the time ( rising early in the morning ), the place ( a deserted place ), and remove ourselves from the crowd to pray, we find the healing, peace, and direction from God. The Confirmation candidates participated in a retreat run by our Youth Group last weekend where they made the time (without their phones and away from their busy schedules) to listen to God in their lives. The retreat inspired faith-filled conversations and built God centered relationships. Monday, February 12, we have a guest speaker, Craig Jandoli, who will speak to the candidates in the church at 7:15 p.m. All are welcome to this presentation. Mr. Jandoli is an engaging speaker. For adults, in addition to Monday s presentation by Mr. Jandoli, you are invited to a Lenten series coming soon. Look for information in upcoming bulletins. Find a time and place when you can remove yourself from the busyness of life to pray. Find the healing, peace, and direction from God. 3 FEBRUARY 4, 2018 ARCHDIOCESE OF NEWARK 2018 LENTEN REGULATIONS 1. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence. On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. 2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence "substantially," or as a whole, is a serious obligation. 3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. 4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, February 18, 2018 to The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, May 27, The Code of Canon Law (can. 1253) allows the pastor to grant, in individual cases and for a just cause, a commutation of the obligations associated with the Lenten days of penance into pious works. The Code would also allow a pastor in those circumstances to dispense an individual from the specified obligations. Please contact Father Jim if you have any concerns about your ability to adhere to the Lenten Regulations. *Canon 920, 1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help. Ps.72:12 Just a little update from Table of Plenty on how we are doing. We had some currently-registered families over the last six months who no longer needed to come to our food pantry on a weekly basis. As a result, that gave us the opportunity to open up registration to some new families. We held a one-day registration last weekend for new families in need to enter our ministry s food assistance program. We registered 30 new families from Bergen County and Passaic County. Those new families, combined with the existing families we serve, shows us that we are now assisting 339 adults and 207 children. We are very blessed to be able to help so many. Once the warmer weather comes back to all of us, Table of Plenty will have some new ways in which you can volunteer your time. Those opportunities will begin late Spring and we will be sure to let you know. Thank you as always for all you do for us throughout the year. A copy of your 2017 contributions report will be available starting Thursday, February 15. If you would like a copy for tax purposes, please contact Judy Fanelli at the Parish Center. If you have already requested a copy either in person or over the phone, there is no need to contact me again, your name is on the list already. Reporting of Sexual Abuse The Archdiocese takes very seriously any and all allegations of sexual misconduct by members of the clergy, religious, and lay staff of the Archdiocese. We encourage anyone with knowledge of an act of sexual misconduct to inform us immediately so that we may take appropriate action to protect others and provide support to victims of sexual abuse. Individuals who wish to report an allegation of sexual misconduct may do so by calling the Archdiocesan Office of Child and Youth Protection at

Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed He told them, Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come. Mark 1:35, 38 In today s Gospel reading we see a perfect example of stewardship. Jesus gives His time to do all that God wishes - healing the sick and preaching. But before He begins, Jesus makes time to be alone with God in prayer. It is through prayer, spending time with God, that we find the strength to do what He wishes us to do. Be sure to find time every day to be with God. 639

As you discern God's calling, explore Ministry to the Ill and Homebound At times, physical injury, old age, or debilitating disease prevents our parishioners from participating regularly in the celebration of the Eucharist. During such times, contact with the community of faith is needed more than ever before. We can arrange for you to receive the Eucharist, the sacrament of Reconciliation, and/or the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick in your home or hospital room. Please call the Parish Center if you wish to be visited. Parish Membership If you are new to the parish, please submit a completed parish census form. Blank forms are available in the Gathering Space and on our website. Families already registered with the parish are encouraged to keep current their membership information. Initiation into the Catholic Church The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process of formation and initiation for those (age seven and older) who have never been baptized and wish to become members of the Roman Catholic Church. Formation and initiation opportunities also exist for adults baptized into the Roman Catholic Church as infants, but who have not received the sacraments of Confirmation and/or Eucharist. Christians baptized in Eastern Orthodox Churches or in communions other than Roman Catholic who wish to enter into the fullness of Catholic communion may also participate in the RCIA formation process. For more information, please contact Father Jim. Visitation Academy Parents wishing to provide their children with a quality Catholic education are encouraged to consider Visitation Academy, a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Located in Paramus and supported by the Catholic parishes of Paramus and Rochelle Park, Visitation Academy offers classes for Grades pre-k3 through eight. For more information, please visit or call Intention Requests We can spiritually remember an anniversary of marriage, ordination or death, birthday, or other significant milestone for the living or deceased by dedicating the items we use for worship: the sanctuary lamps which burn constantly before the Blessed Sacrament in the church and Holy Family Chapel, the altar candles which remain lit during each liturgical celebration, the bread and wine consecrated at Mass, the Advent wreath candles, and the Paschal candle. Masses may also be offered for a special intention. A set donation is requested for each intention, a card is provided, and the intention is printed in the bulletin. To request an intention, please visit the Parish Center.
