The Profession of the Faith The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, [All bow, at the following text ] and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. (continued) For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 3

V: Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. R/: That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

5 A Prayer Before Mass Loving Father, as on my earthly pilgrimage I come to receive Your beloved Son under the veil of a sacrament, may I one day see Him face to face in glory, who lives and reigns with You for ever and ever. Amen. A Prayer After Receiving Holy Communion Anima Christi Soul of Christ, be my sanctification; Body of Christ, be my salvation; Blood of Christ, fill all my veins; Water of Christ's side, wash out my stains; Passion of Christ, my comfort be; O good Jesus, listen to me; In Thy wounds I fain would hide; Ne'er to be parted from Thy side; Guard me, should the foe assail me; Call me when my life shall fail me; Bid me come to Thee above, With Thy saints to sing Thy love, World without end. Amen. A Spiritual Communion Prayer for those unable to receive the Eucharist My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. Our Faith: April Month dedicated to the Holy Eucharist The Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist in the Early Church by St. Cyril of Jerusalem Early Church Father and Doctor of the Church On the night he was betrayed our Lord Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples and said: Take, eat: this is my body. He took the cup, gave thanks and said: Take, drink: this is my blood. Since Christ himself has declared the bread to be his body, who can have any further doubt? Since he himself has said quite categorically, This is my blood, who would dare to question it and say that it is not his blood? Therefore, it is with complete assurance that we receive the bread and wine as the body and blood of Christ. His body is given to us under the symbol of bread, and his blood is given to us under the symbol of wine, in order to make us by receiving them one body and blood with him. Having his body and blood in our members, we become bearers of Christ and sharers, as Saint Peter says, in the divine nature. Once, when speaking to the Jews, Christ said: Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood you shall have no life in you. This horrified them and they left him. Not understanding his words in a spiritual way, they thought the Savior wished them to practice cannibalism. Continued on page TODAY S READINGS Reading I:The author of life you put to death, but God raised him from the dead Acts 3:13-15, Psalm: Lord, let your face shine on us (Psalm 4). Reading II: We have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous one (1 John 2:1-5a). Gospel: Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day (Luke 24:35-48) Reflection: Think of a day when you felt trapped inside because of illness, distress or despondency. Waking up each day felt as if there was a dark cloud above or a heavy weight of anxiety and/or anger dragging you down. Now, remember the day you woke up feeling better or the moment that the difficult circumstances were resolved. What a sense of relief; you couldn t wait to move forward with life. Questions: Was our Lord closer to you during the difficult period; or the time of relief; or both? When the Risen Jesus appeared to the disciples they thought he was a ghost. Why? Is he a ghost (just an idea) or is he real? How can Jesus strengthen your faith in his power? Share with others how Jesus has revealed himself to you! Pray: Open my eyes, Lord, to your glorious plans. 5

9 St. Thecla Legacy Society St. Thecla parish is pleased to announce that it has established the St. Thecla Legacy Society to recognize and thank donors during their lifetime for making a planned gift to St. Thecla Parish. Legacy giving is the thoughtful process of planning for donations to be made to St. Thecla parish during one s lifetime or after one s death. Because legacy giving often originates from assets rather than income, legacy giving is not just for wealthy individuals. Nearly everyone has some assets and options to consider for a legacy gift that could benefit St. Thecla parish. You may already be a part of the St. Thecla Legacy Society if you have provided for St. Thecla parish through one or more of the following planned giving opportunities for example: established a bequest in a will or living trust with St. Thecla parish as a beneficiary named the parish as a beneficiary of an individual retirement account, 401(k) plan, pension, or annuity named the parish as the owner and final beneficiary of a life insurance policy or property If you have already provided for St. Thecla parish through one of the various planned giving options, please use the form below to let us know so that we can recognize and thank you. If you haven t yet provided for a planned gift for St. Thecla parish, please consider doing so! Please know that the amount of your intended gift will never be publicly disclosed by St. Thecla parish. You also have the option of either remaining an anonymous benefactor or allowing the parish to publish your name in a St. Thecla Legacy Society membership list as encouragement to other parishioners who may also be considering a planned gift. For further information on the St. Thecla Legacy Society or planned giving for our parish, you may contact the parish office at (773) You should, of course, consult with your personal financial advisor or attorney who can provide guidance for you on your specific question, financial situation and on your desire to make a planned gift to St. Thecla parish. 10 The Women s Center Pregnant women in difficult situations often find themselves feeling confused, under pressure and alone. At The Women s Center our counselors help them through friendship, counseling, and material assistance. We have saved over 38,000 women and their babies from the horrible consequences of abortion. We receive beautiful letters of thanks. Have you felt God calling you to serve in the pro-life mission field? The Women s Center is looking for new volunteers Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. Areas of greatest need include lobby reception, baby bottle cleaning, client assisting, and baby furniture distribution. We especially need committed volunteers on Mondays and Fridays to serve in our front lobby, a volunteer to co-assist clients in the family room on Tuesdays, a baby furniture room volunteer for Thursdays (who is handy with tools), and volunteers to clean baby bottles for our spare change campaigns (up to four people at a time). If you wish to offer your time and talent, volunteers are needed to sell flowers after Masses for our annual sale on Mother s Day weekend, May 9 th and 10 th, either at your own parish or at a parish other than your own. Honor your mother by helping on behalf of mothers in crisis pregnancies. We also need 4 walkers, 3 toddler beds, 2 high chairs, 6 strollers, 2 double strollers, 4 bouncers, 5 pack n plays, crib sheets, 3 changing tables and 4 infant car seat/carriers. It will be a great help if you can deliver these to us. For our address, or if a pick-up by a volunteer is needed, please call The families who receive these things are grateful for your generosity. 13 Our Faith: continued from page 5 Continued from page 5... Under the old covenant there was showbread, but it came to an end with the old dispensation to which it belonged. Under the new covenant there is bread from heaven and the cup of salvation. These sanctify both soul and body, the bread being adapted to the sanctification of the body, the Word, to the sanctification of the soul. Do not, then, regard the eucharistic elements as ordinary bread and wine: they are in fact the body and blood of the Lord, as he himself has declared. Whatever your senses may tell you, be strong in faith. You have been taught and you are firmly convinced that what looks and tastes like bread and wine is not bread and wine but the body and the blood of Christ. You know also how David referred to this long ago when he sang: Bread gives strength to man s heart and makes his face shine with the oil of gladness. Strengthen your heart, then, by receiving this bread as spiritual bread, and bring joy to the face of your soul. May purity of conscience remove the veil from the face of your soul so that be contemplating the glory of the Lord, as in a mirror, you may be transformed from glory to glory in Christ Jesus our Lord. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen. As of this printing date you have donated $11, It takes much time, talent and the treasury of all to keep our parish growing and thriving. Your response is a sign of awareness of what God has blessed us with. Deacon Bob Cnota is at home recovering from a mild stroke; he is getting up and about and continues with the necessary rehabilitation work. Keep him, his wife Kathleen and their family in your prayers. Mr. Gargano (our school principal), the advisory council and I are all in 100% to grow our school and parish. Please pass out the flyer on the back page of the bulletin for our April 27th school open house. Pray for the Christians who are martyred daily. At times it is incomprehensible to acknowledge the level of evil that human beings are capable of inflicting. All the suffering in our lives personally and globally has prompted Pope Francis to declare a Holy Year of Mercy that will begin Dec. 8, 2015 (Feast of the Immaculate Conception ) and ending Nov. 20, 2016 (Feast of Christ the King). The Holy Father stated, I have often thought about how the Church might make clear its mission of being a witness to mercy, the pontiff said during a homily at a Vatican reconciliation service. It is a journey that begins with a spiritual conversion. For this reason, I have decided to call an extraordinary jubilee that is to have the mercy of God at its center. It shall be a Holy Year of Mercy. We want to live this year in the light of the Lord s words: Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful (Lk 6:36). During the Holy Year, the Sunday readings will derive from the Gospel of Luke, who is known as the evangelist of mercy. More to come; keep the faith, God bless, Fr. Gene 13
