2 The Seventeenth Sunday After Pentecost Welcome all in the name of Jesus, especially those who are worshiping for the first time with us. Please sign our guest book (make sure to indicate if you would like the Pastor to visit) and accept our invitation to worship with us again. Who should commune at the Altar of Glory of Christ Lutheran Church? According to the Scriptures and the Confessional statements of the church only those should commune who have been examined and absolved by the pastor. If you wish to commune at Glory of Christ for the first time, please talk to the Pastor before doing so. Holy Communion is the most intimate expression of Christian fellowship and it is important to the members of Glory of Christ Lutheran Church that all who commune have a common understanding and commitment to the Gospel teachings of the Bible. Following along with the Service: At Glory of Christ the pastor typically makes announcements after the service. So the service just starts at the appropriate time without a specific welcome. (The welcome actually occurs in the service itself when the pastor says, The Lord be with you and the congregation responds.) To follow the service, you should turn to the page indicated at the top of your bulletin insert. This week the page is 151. Usually we simply work through the service interrupting the process for the singing of hymns, certain prayers and the scripture readings. The prayers are usually printed in the service folder as are the Scripture readings. Hymns are found in the latter half of the Service book. If you are having trouble following the service you can ask someone nearby and they will help you. You can also comfort yourself with the knowledge that almost everyone has a little trouble following the service the first time through. It gets easier. Worship Notes The Seventeenth Sunday After Pentecost Philippians 2:1-18 At first read, the epistle lesson today seems like an odd hodgepodge of topics: unity, humility, Jesus' incarnation, the cross, grumbling, this depraved world, Paul's suffering, and strangely, joy. But what pulls all these different strands all together are these two simple words, in Christ. Paul exhorts the Philippians to unity and humility (rather than jealous rivalry) because they are in Christ. Christ, who although he had every right to claim power and status as the Son of God, didn't do that. Instead, he humbled himself by being born and dying and was exalted then by the Father. Since this is the Christ that we are in, we will stand out in this crooked and twisted generation, because, like Christ, we aren't just looking to get higher in the world by stepping on others. Paul himself was a living example of this as he sat in prison for preaching the word of life. He was glad to empty himself and become nothing so that the people of Philippi might hear the Good News. Should this remarkable kind of self-sacrifice surprise us? Of course not. Sacrifice and humility is the way of Christ and the way for all those who are in Him. Even you.

9 Northwest Suburban Circuit Congregation Prayers Each week we will be praying for a congregation in the circuit and for others who have or have had a connection with them. This week, we are asking for prayers for Grace Lutheran Church, Brooklyn Park, and Pastor Vance Milbrath. Acolytes & Processional Cross Bearers: The signup sheet for both Acolytes and Processional Cross Bearers is on the table in the back of the Sanctuary for September through Easter. Thank You! Mom's Group: Mom's group is going to look a little different this year with the construction. We will be meeting monthly in different people's homes. If you are a mom of any age, YOU ARE WELCOME TO COME! Our October meeting will be at Sara DeBlois home on Friday October 13th from 6-8pm. More details to follow soon! Next Compassion Circle Meeting will take place on Monday October 9 th at 1:00 pm and will be at Cornerstone Assisted Living (the same room as Wednesday morning Bible Study). Location for the room is clearly marked in the lobby. THE THIRTIETH ANNUAL MINNESOTA LUTHERAN FALL CONFERENCE will be held Saturday, October 21 st at Redeemer Lutheran Church, rd St N St. Cloud, from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Registration opens at The theme is: What the Church Is Good? The speakers will be Rev. Dr. Alvin Schmidt from St. Louis, MO, Rev. James Strawn from Archbold, OH and Rev. Dr. Brian Saunders from Cedar Falls, IA. Registration is $25, which includes coffee, rolls and lunch ($10 for high school and college students). Though preregistration is not required, a non-monetary pre-registration is required if you plan to eat. So, for the meal, please call (320) or office@redeemerstcloud.org by Oct. 12 th. GoC Chili Cookoff Sunday, October 15 th! Yes, it s still on for this year! We have rented the Hamel Community Building for this year s cookoff. It will once again begin at 5:00 pm. Signup sheets are available in the back of the Sanctuary. Make your best (and/or hottest) chili, most delicious pie or cornbread.
