2 SAINT MARY S PARISH October 2007 Page 2 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE STATEMENT We are pleased and excited to share our first newsletter with our parish members and visitors of St. Mary s Church. With the many committees and activities we have planned for the Church, we hope that this newsletter willl be informative to our community. Since then, St. Mary s has welcomed many new members and visitors to join our church family. As a growing community we hope to link all of our family and friends in joining us for Bible studies, prayer, activities and events sponsored by various committees. We thank you all for your support and prayers. May God continue to blesss you and your families. In Faith & Blessings, The 2007 Executive Committee DEACON S CORNER On Sunday, September 23, 2007 and October 7, 2007, Deacon Lawrence Namato led our first series of lectures. The lecture topic was About the Assyrian Church. This lecture examined the roots of the Assyrian Church, its history, traditions, theology an sacraments. Please look for updates for our next planned lecture on the church website. All lectures are held in English and we encourage all youth, family and friends to participate. On November 11, 2007 at 6:30pm, Rev. Father Charles Klutz from Chicago will broadcast a lecture on a tentative topic via satellite in the Church basement.

3 SAINT MARY S PARISH October 2007 Page 3 Y YOUTH PAD The St. Mary s Youth is busy at work! Youth 14 and up are encouraged to join! If you are interested in joining, please see a Youth member for more information! The Youth has been planning several events that you may find in the bulletin for events hosted by the Youth. LADIES AUXILIARY SECTION As many of us know there will be thousands of Assyrian and Chaldean families immigrating to the United States in the course of the coming year. In particular, the Metro Detroit area will be home to many. In an effort to help our community, we are setting up a registry in the Church office for any donations that may be available. Since we do not have storage, we ask that you list your name and when items are needed, we will phone you with a request for assistance. We ask that items be gently used and/ /or in good condition. We have created a small list of items in helping others: VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES If you are a senior citizen and would like to have someone clean your yard or help you with chores and errands, please contact the Church secretary to arrange for a volunteer to help you out! Furniture (chairs, beds, dining etc.) Housewares (gently used plates, pots & pans) Gently Used Children & Youth Clothing Gently Used Children s Toys (no stuffed animals CHOIR SECTION We have many high school students who are trying to get their volunteer hours in and this would be a great way to lend a helping hand in the community!

4 SAINT MARY S PARISH October 2007 Page 4 The St. Mary's choir is an integral part of worship at Sunday Qurbana. The choir is composed of dedicated parish members who regularly practice under Father Benjamin's direction. Rehearsals are held regularly. If you would like to join the choir - please contactt Father Benjamin or Shamasha Gewargis for more information. Pleasee Pray For Us L LEARNING ARAMAIC Deacon Gewargis continues to teach Aramaic to children and adults. If you are interested in joining a class at any level, please contactt Deacon Gewargis or the Church office. Classess are held every Saturday 4:00p.m.-5:30p.m. and Sunday 1:00p.m. 2:30pm. Our Men and Women serving our country and for their safe return. To list the name of your loved ones please visit the Motwa office. FUNDRAISERS The Executive Committee has formed a bond program for early repayment of the Church loan. Each bond is $5,000. All monies will be returned to each bond holder over the course of each month through a lottery drawing. This is the greatest and the first commandment DID YOU KNOW? Abda of Hira (?-680) was a monk of the Assyrian Church of the East. He was born at Al-Hirah, the son of Hanif. He became a monk under Mar Abda of Gamre. He preached Christianity to the pagan Persians and is said to have worked many miracles before dying in his cave in 680. The Assyrian Church is the original Christian church in what was once Parthia; eastern Iraq and Iran. Geographically it stretched in the medieval period to China and India: the above pictured monument was found in Xi'an (Hsi-an), the Tang-period capital of China.

There is additional information that is required to update everyone in the system. Prior to the beginning of the New Year, a form will be sent out updating and verifying all family information.
