1 Lent, Holy Week and Easter at Norwich Cathedral
2 Lent, Holy Week and Easter at Norwich Cathedral Lent need not be a season of gloom and long faces, after all it falls in the Spring when days lengthen and the day brightens. It is a time of preparation for the joy of Easter and, historically, for the celebration of the sacraments of Christian initiation Baptism and Confirmation. Increasingly today, the Baptism service is recovering the wonderful atmosphere of awe which once so impressed those being baptised and those, alike, who gathered to support them. Preparation for these awe-inspiring mysteries involved self-examination, sorrow for sin, self-denial, study of the Scriptures and almsgiving and it is these activities, joyfully undertaken, which characterise Lent today. Our daily worship is more austere in this season no flowers, sombre colours and no alleluias but always beautiful and engaging. There are opportunities for deepening our study of our faith, reflecting on the challenges of Scripture, and raising money for charitable purposes through self-denial. As the traditional forty days of Lent give way to Holy Week, our preparations intensify and the deeply moving services of the days before Easter draw us ever nearer, first to the Cross and thence to the Empty Tomb.
3 Ash Wednesday, Lent Reflections and Study Lent Lunches and Quiet Day Ash Wednesday 1 March 2017 Sung Eucharist with Imposition of Ashes, 6.00pm Wednesday Evening Addresses 8 March - 5 April 2017, 7.00pm, Nave This year sees the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther posting his Ninety-five Theses on the door of All Saints' Church, Wittenberg. This significant moment in history signalled the beginning of the Protestant Reformation in Europe, which went on to deeply influence the Church in England. To mark this anniversary our Lent Reflections will focus on aspects of Luther s theology, with a series of weekly reflections given by Canon Nick Garrard. Week 1 - 'Here I stand': Encountering Luther An Anglican perspective on Luther, 500 years on. Week 2 - Eine Feste Burg: Luther s Inner Castle Luther s interior faith, as expressed in a hymn. Week 3 - Martin Luther: Dark Prophet of the Apocalypse Engaging with the dark side of Luther s pronouncements. Week 4 - Reclaiming the Last Supper Luther s German Mass and table talk. Week 5 - The Crucified Christ as Lutheran Icon The renewal of God s image. Friday Afternoon Discussions 3 March - 7 April 2017, 3.30pm, Deanery On Fridays during Lent a study group will meet at the Deanery for 90 minute study sessions. The group will follow the Diocese's Praying Lent with the Saints course, with sessions led by The Very Revd Jane Hedges and The Revd Dr Peter Doll. Whilst there will be some information about the tradition of prayer conveyed, the course is mainly an opportunity to experience prayer and meditation within a different tradition each week. To book a place please contact Alison Porter, PA to the Dean, on or dean.pa@cathedral.org.uk. The Library As always the Cathedral Library will be available for private reading and study, with staff and volunteers on hand to assist with any enquiries relating to its collections. 7 The Bishop s Lent Appeal 2017 The Bishop's Lent Appeal 2017 In 2017 The Bishop's Lent Appeal will be focused on raising money to provide a car for Hospice Ethiopia to reach those in need of palliative care. Hospice Ethiopia is the only palliative care unit in Ethiopia. They provide free community based palliative care to terminally ill people within three districts of the capital city. With just one specially trained doctor and three nurses, they serve an estimated population of 900,000. Please give today so we can reach those in need Hospice Ethiopia is the only palliative care unit in Ethiopia. Your gift will provide a car enabling them to reach those who can t travel. How to give: ONLINE CHURCH TEXT JAM JAR dioceseofnorwich.org /lent Gift Aid envelope LENT17 5 to Collecting donations All donations go directly to the Diocese of Norwich (Charity No ) for the Lent Appeal Through the appeal, your money will go towards providing the Hospice with an off-road rental car for two years. Roads are often rough and of poor quality, and public transport is busy and unreliable. We want to help enable care and equipment to reach those who cannot travel to the hospice. Cars are expensive and difficult to maintain given the availability of parts. By renting the vehicle all maintenance costs are included; well advised given the quality of the roads. In addition, the nurses are frequently carrying medicines to their patients, in particular opiate pain killers, which would make them vulnerable on public transport. If you wish to promote this cause you will find resources to watch, download and print at Please see the advert to the left for ways to give. Special donation envelopes are also available in the Cathedral. Thank you. Driving Hospice Care in Ethiopia The Bishop s Lent Appeal 2017
8 Events in Norwich The Story of Holy Week and Easter This year Churches in Norwich City Centre are joining together to tell the story of Holy Week and Easter. What's more, they'll be publicising activities in an entirely new way on social media. A full programme of worship and events will be on offer including The 'Watch' Pilgrimage on Maundy Thursday evening, which will see a number of City Centre Churches open late for peaceful reflection. This culminates with Compline at 11.45pm at the Cathedral, To find out more search on Facebook. The Hands of Jesus Good Friday 14 April 2017, 10.00am pm, Outside The Forum Members of the Cathedral Community join friends from other City Centre Churches in offering the gift of a hand massage to people in our City. As Jesus' hands were wounded for love we will show our love by caring for the hands of those who pass by. Take a break from rushing around the City and have a moment for yourself. Hand massage is non-intrusive, simple, soothing and calming; let the stress fall away. A wonderful gift on a significant day.
