Certaly everyone has ir favorites, but have always been partial those Christmas carols that speak directly heart of what it is that we are celebratg at Christmas time; namely, birth of one who will save from our ss. Among panoply of Christmas hymns is one that doesn t actually mention birth of Jes, but is none--less thoroughly Christian, and celebrates a man whose feast day we celebrate on September 28th Sat Wencesla. The song celebrates a man who was born around AD 905. He was son of Christian Duke of Bohemia and a pagan prcess. n addition good example of this far, Wencesla was structed Catholic faith by his grandmor, Sat Ludmilla. Despite fact that his well--do heritage could have afforded him an effortless life of leisure, Sat Wencesla, not only excelled his academic pursuits, but he also managed advance significantly spiritual life. n fact, most people thought he would have been much happier as a monk, rar than a duke. Upon death of his far, Duke Wratislaw, his mor, Prcess Dragomir rose power, and becae she practiced native pagan religion, she seized opportunity get rid of Catholic faith. mmediately she purged Catholics from government offices, closed churches, and forbade teachg of Catholicism. Wencesla grandmor urged him seize power from his mor, and with help of Christian forces, he was able secure a large portion of country under his governance. As a ruler, he was a fair and t kg, always seekg provide for his people. He was a pio and prayerful man, attendg Mass every day, and livg an ascetic and penitent life. Additionally, Wencesla was not only a model of Christian charity, but also actively supported spread of Christian faith throughout his realm. When his country was threatened with vasion, rar than risk lives of him men, he resolved dispute through sgle combat. His mor, however, was thoroughly opposed Wencesla rule and so, began plot his demise. First, she resorted havg Ludmillia killed, and n stirred up anti-christians forces agast Wencesla. When Wencesla married and had a son, his younger bror, Bolesla, aware that he was no longer successor throne, oed his mor and opposition forces. They deceptively vited Sat Wencesla Feast of Sats Cosmas and Damian, and re, on steps of church, assassated him, by runng him through with a sword. After his death, Holy Roman Emperor Ot, who had conferred upon Wencesla title kg, vaded Bohemia and forced Bolesla reverse anti- Catholic measures that he Dragomir had put place. Despite many praiseworthy accomplishments of his reign, what is he most remembered for (if song is any dication), is his charity ward poor. Take a closer look at lyrics of carol this week, and n ask yourself how would you want Church remember you 1000 years from now?
