One of the things that is indispensable to the reverent celebration of the Sacraments here at the Cathedral is, of course, the prayerful participation of God s people at Mass. But one of the things that enables this to happen is the generous assistance of various liturgical ministers. Whether as an usher, keeping good order and helping with the collection and offertory procession, an altar server, assisting the priest during the celebration of Mass, a lector proclaiming God s word, or an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, administering the body and blood of the Lord to His people, the various liturgical ministries help things to flow smoothly, allowing those who come in enter into the worship of God. What I am going to ask you to do at all the Sunday Masses next weekend (October 14/15), and the weekday Masses which follow, is to consider becoming a liturgical minister here at the Cathedral. It does not require an exorbitant time commitment and is a great way to place the gifts that God has given to you at His service in a most generous way. At each Mass there will be a short appeal, followed by instructions for how to indicate your willingness to serve as an usher, altar server, lector, or extraordinary ministry of Holy Communion. Then, after a brief training, you will be placed on the liturgical minister schedule according to your availability. Please prayerfully consider this week, whether you would be willing to serve as a liturgical minister, and know that your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and God bless. 2
3 Ordinary Time XXVII 8 October 2017 Movie Night: The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima - In honor of the 100th Anniversary of the appearances of the Blessed Mother at Fatima, the Cathedral will host a Catholic Movie Night this Sunday, Oct. 8th, following the 5:30 pm Mass. Join your fellow parishioners in viewing the 1952 classic film The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima. Bring your family! Bring a friend! The Knights of Columbus are here - The next two weekends you will be greeted by members of the Knights of Columbus. These Catholic gentlemen are conducting a Parish wide membership drive at the Cathedral. There will be an Open House and informational meeting in the lower sacristy on Sunday, October 29th, after the 10:30 am Mass. All Catholic men age 18 years and older, along with their families, are invited and encouraged to attend and find out the advantages the Knights of Columbus have to offer you and our parish. If you cannot attend, and need additional information about the Knights of Columbus, please contact parishioner Gabriel Minton at daily until 4 pm, or after hours. Mysteria Rosarii is a CD, recorded by our Cathedral Choir, and dedicated to the Mysteries of the Rosary. This, and the other previous recordings by the choir, are available for $16 each on the Cathedral s website or at the Rectory Office. District Gathering with Bp. Perez - Our new Bishop, Nelson Perez, is looking forward to meeting the priests and people of our Diocese. With this in mind, we will celebrate Mass with Bishop Perez on Wednesday, October 18, at St. Stanislaus Church: 3649 East 65th Street, in Cleveland, at 7:00 pm. Afterwards, everyone is invited to a reception that will follow in the Social Center where there will be an opportunity to meet and greet the Bishop. This event is being held for the parishes of the Cleveland Southeast and Central East Districts, so we hope that you will oin us for the celebration. We look forward to seeing you on October 18, Family Perspectives - The king in today s gospel entrusted his land to the tenants. They did not own the land. Our children are entrusted to us. We do not own them. They belong to God. Tend to them well so God will be pleased with our parenting efforts. 4 The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Hope & Healing Beyond Heroin October is AWARENESS MONTH in Catholic Charities Heroin/Opioid Awareness Campaign. When addiction dominates a family, knowing where to seek help can seem elusive. This fall awareness campaign s monthly focus features information and social media posts on how to break the silence, raise awareness of where to turn for help, and how communities can decrease opioid availability. Look for Catholic Charities supported panel forums near your parish in October. For information on raising awareness of how we can all have an impact, visit the Catholic Charities Hope and Healing Beyond Heroin page at <ccdocle.org> or the Greater Than Heroin initiative at <greaterthanheroin.com>. Serving the Poor in Our Midst Each day, numerous people come to the rectory office seeking assistance. Through your generosity, and with the assistance of the workers at the Bp. Cosgrove Center, we are able to fill some of their needs. Listed below is a report on the assistance the Cathedral has offered this past month, and on your generosity in support of these efforts. Baby bottles are available (one per household/family) at the entrances of the church. We ask you to take them home, fill them with your loose change (or a check payable to Womankind), and return them to the church the weekend of October 28/29. The funds generated will help Womankind provide free prenatal care and a full range of support services to pregnant women in need. For information about Womankind, check out their website <womankindcleveland.com>. Blanket Sunday This weekend, Oct. 7/8, is the 31st Annual Blanket Sunday Collection, sponsored by the Diocesan St. Vincent de Paul Society. In recent years, lack of storage space has meant your money goes toward bulk purchases of blankets and other items for the homeless and poor individuals in our own metropolitan area, making your donation go further. Envelopes are available at the doors of the cathedral. So blanket someone for the winter - and give yourself a warm feeling! You may also donate online at <svdpcle.org>. The Social Action Ministry will meet this Sunday, Oct. 8, at 9:00 am. All are welcome to oin us to see how we can best help the needy in our parish. Personal Items Collection (PIC) -for the Homeless occurs this weekend, October 7/8. The Social Action Ministry will be collecting articles that will be distributed by the Bishop Cosgrove Center. We understand that these are especially trying times and there are many worthy causes asking for your help. We ust ask you to give whatever you can, if you can. At this time, the special needs are soap, tooth brushes & tooth paste, deodorant, women s socks, and backpacks. However, all donations are needed and appreciated. If you had no opportunity to shop, your monetary donations are greatly appreciated and will allow the Ministry to purchase these items on your behalf. Envelopes are in the holders attached to the bins and can be placed in the bins or in the Security Box by the E. 9th Street vestibule. Blessed is he who considers the poor; The Lord will deliver him in time of trouble. Psalm 41:1. It put forth its foliage to the Sea, its shoots as far as the River. Why have you broken down its walls, so that every passer-by plucks its fruit, The boar from the forest lays it waste, and the beasts of the field feed upon it? Once again, O Lord of hosts, look down from heaven, and see; take care of this vine, and protect what your right hand has planted the son of man whom you yourself made strong. Then we will no more withdraw from you; give us new life, and we will call upon your name. O Lord, God of hosts, restore us; if your face shine upon us, then we shall be saved.. el. Homily Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (All bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to udge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 9 Ordinary Time XXVII 8 October 2017 How Can I Become More Involved? - There are many ways for Catholics to get more involved in their faith and in the ministry of the Church.
