3 INTRODUCTION Sunday Matins Music Series The Sunday Matins Music Series was completed in late It contains musical texts and recordings in Greek and English of hymns from the Octoechos (Parakletike) used by the Greek Orthodox Church for the service of Matins, in the eight modes of Byzantine Music. The English versions are accurate translations that also preserve the meter and melodies of the original. Previously released in nine volumes, it is currently available in one large volume. This Volume This supplimentary volume contains the Great Doxology in each of the eight modes. The translation of the text is new. I consulted various works of St. Nikodemos for assistance, particulary in rendering the opening verse. The music is loosely based on the melodic formulae in the Doxologies of Manuel Protopsaltes (+1819), except for Mode II, which is again loosely based on that of Ioannis Kavvadas, as found in Vol. II of the Mousikos Pandektes of "ZOE" (Athens, 1982). Each Doxology is preceded and followed by the prescribed troparia for use on Sundays. It may be that some churches are not accustomed to using the troparion, "When You rose from the sepulcher..." at the end of the Doxology in the Plagal Modes instead of the more common one, "Today has salvation..." For this reason, I have included settings of the latter in the Plagal Modes, at the end of this volume. As is the case with my other such publications, this is a provisional translation, a working text. I welcome any criticism whatsoever, inasmuch as this will contribute to producing something better. I would like to thank His Eminence Metropolitan Maximos, the Greek Orthodox Bishop of Pittsburgh and my personal benefactor, as well as the members of the Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, who have expressed their support and interest in our various translations and musical endeavors. With their encouragement and prayers, we hope by God s grace to continue the work of translating our sacred liturgical texts, all for the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, and for the edification of His holy Church. On Sundays, if the mode of the week be I, II, III, or IV, the following troparion is chanted in Mode IV or the mode of the week: T oday has salvation come to pass in the world. Let us sing to Him who resurrected from the tomb and is the Author of our life. For, destroying death by death, He gave us the victory and the great mercy. Or, if the mode of the week be Plagal, the following troparion in Mode Pl. IV or the mode of the week: W hen You rose from the sepulcher and broke the bonds of Hades, You repealed the sentence of death, O Lord, and delivered all from the snares of the enemy. And when You showed yourself to Your Apostles, You sent them out to preach, and through them You granted peace to the whole world, O only very merciful One. 3
