Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church Andover, MA April 2016 Holy Week and Pascha a life changing experience Experiencing the Passion of Christ during the Holy Week services in the Orthodox Church is a life changing experience and can truly bring about a spiritual earthquake in our lives. Below is an explanation of each of the days. Try to make this special week a priority. You will truly be blessed. Lazarus Saturday: Lazarus Saturday is the day which begins Holy Week. It commemorates the raising of our Lord s friend Lazarus, who had been in the tomb four days. This act confirmed the universal resurrection from the dead that all of us will experience at our Lord s Second Coming. This miracle led many to faith, but it also led to the chief priest s and Pharisees decision to kill Jesus (John 11:47-57). Palm Sunday (The Entrance of our Lord into Jerusalem): Our Lord enters Jerusalem and is proclaimed king, but in an earthly sense, as many people of His time were seeking a political Messiah. Our Lord is King, of course, but of a different type--the eternal King prophesied by Zechariah the Prophet. We use palms on this day to show that we too accept Jesus as the true King and Messiah of the Jews, whom we are willing to follow-- even to the cross. Holy Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday: The services of these days are known as the Bridegroom or Nymphios Services. Each of the nights the priest carries the icon of Christ the Bridegroom in procession, and we sing the Hymn of the Bridegroom. We behold Christ as the Bridegroom of the Church, bearing the marks of His suffering, yet preparing a marriage Feast for us in God's Kingdom. Each of these Bridegroom services has a particular theme. On Holy Sunday evening, the Blessed Joseph, the son of Jacob the Patriarch, is commemorated. Joseph is often seen as a Type of Christ. Joseph was betrayed by his brothers, thrown into a pit, and sold into slavery by them. In the same way, our Lord was rejected, betrayed by His own, and sold into the slavery of death. The Parable of the Ten Virgins is read on Holy Monday. It tells the story of the five virgins who filled their lamps in preparation for receiving the bridegroom while the other five allowed their lamps to go out, and hence were shut out of the marriage feast. This parable is a warning that we must always be prepared to receive our Lord when He comes again. The theme of the day is reinforced by the expostelarion hymn we sing: I see Thy Bridal Chamber adorned, O my Savior, but have no wedding garment that I may enter. O Giver of Light, enlighten the vesture of my soul, and save me. The theme of Holy Tuesday is repentance and forgiveness. We remember the sinful woman who anointed our Lord in anticipation of His death. Her repentance and love of Christ is the theme of the wonderful Hymn of Kassiane which is chanted on this night, reminding us one more time, before it is too late, that we too may be forgiven if we repent. Anton James Lolos Telly Papanikolaou Holy Unction: The Mystery or Sacrament of Holy Unction is celebrated on Holy Wednesday evening. Actually this service can be celebrated any time during the year, especially when one is ill. However, because of our need for forgiveness and spiritual healing, we offer this service during Holy Week for the remission of our sins. We should prepare for this service in a prayerful way, as we do for Holy Communion. Great and Holy Thursday: On Holy Thursday we turn to the last events of our Lord and His Passion. Thursday morning begins with a Vesperal Divine Liturgy commemorating the Mystical Supper. At this Liturgy a second Host is consecrated and kept in the Tabernacle. It is from this Host that Holy Communion is distributed to the shut-ins and the sick throughout the coming year. Thursday evening actually begins the services of Great and Holy Friday. The service of the Twelve Passion Gospels commemorates the solemn time of our Lord s Crucifixion. After the reading of the fifth Gospel, the holy cross is carried around the church in procession, and Christ s body is nailed to the cross in the center of the church. Great and Holy Friday: This is a day of strict fast. As little as possible should be eaten on this day. It is the only day in the entire year that no Divine Liturgy of any kind can be celebrated. In the morning we celebrate the Royal Hours. These solemn hours are observed as we read the various accounts and hymns concerning the crucifixion. In the afternoon we celebrate the Vesper service of the taking down of Christ s body from the cross. During the Gospel reading, our Lord s body is taken off the cross and wrapped in a new, white linen sheet. This act commemorates the removal of Christ s body from the cross by Joseph of Arimathea (John 19:38-42). Later in the service, the Epitaphios, or winding-sheet, with Christ s body on it is carried in procession and placed in the recently decorated tomb. In the evening the Lamentations Orthros service is sung. This service begins in a solemn manner, but by the end of the service we are already anticipating the Resurrection of our Lord. Great and Holy Saturday: This day is a day of hope and waiting. In the morning we celebrate a Vesperal Divine Liturgy which commemorates Christ s victory over death. Laurel leaves are strewn throughout the church during the service, because in the ancient world laurel leaves were a sign of victory. As the leaves are strewn, the choir chants Arise O God and Judge the earth, for to Thee belong all the nations. The Old Testament story of Jonah in the belly of the whale is read at this service because Jonah is seen in the Church as a Type of Christ. As Jonah was three days in the belly of the great fish, and was then safely deposited back onto land, so our Lord was three days in the tomb before His glorious Resurrection. The Vesperal Divine Liturgy of Holy Saturday concludes the services of Holy Week, and brings us to the eve of Great and Holy Pascha the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, when we proclaim: CHRIST IS RISEN! 3 Parish Council Notes Dear Parishioners, The Word - April 2016 Sunday School Sunday School Updates: Our Great and Holy Lent is upon us. This is our time to focus on our own spiritual journey by fasting from certain foods, reading the Bible and participating in the many opportunities to worship at Church. During Lent, in addition to the Sunday Liturgy, there is the Pre-sanctified Liturgy on Wednesday evenings and the Salutations to the Theotokos on Friday evenings. Father also encourages us to read the religious literature available from the Book Store. I want to thank the Ladies Philoptochos Society for providing us with the delicious luncheon on Meatfare Sunday. The pastichio and salad were excellent and the portions were enormous. They worked very hard to make this luncheon so successful. The Parish Council will host our Annual Lenten Luncheon on Sunday, April 10th. The tickets are $15/adults for the fish dinner and $10/children for pizza. This has usually been a sold out event, so get your tickets early. In March we welcomed several new families into our parish. It was fun to see them come forward to receive an icon and be recognized by Father and our parishioners. It reminded me of the time when my young family was new to the parish and Father George Karahalios greeted us so warmly after Liturgy. We are a welcoming community and that is evident by the increasing number of new parishioners is our 100th anniversary year as a parish. The Parish Council has the goal of being debt free in The Mortgage Elimination Committee is working on a very nice mailing to all of our parishioners who haven t yet made a pledge. This mailing is meant to be a friendly reminder about the importance of our parish in the lives of our members. Thank you for making our parish so welcoming to young and old alike. Kali Sarakosti, Buzz Stapczynski, Parish Council President In the month of March the children began their Lenten journey and focused on fasting, praying, forgiveness and alms giving. March 20th was the Sunday of Orthodoxy; thank you to all the children who brought icons to church for our icon procession. The procession was beautiful! This month the children also learned about the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary celebrated on March 25th in their Sunday school classes. For the month of April, the children will be primarily focusing on Christ s journey to Pascha. This is such a wonderful time of year to have your children participate in the faith. Please encourage your children to attend Pre-Sanctified Liturgies on Wednesday evenings, Salutations to the Virgin Mary on Friday evenings and Holy Unction Service. They can also collect coins for their coin boxes, make palm crosses on Saturday of Lazarus, be a Myrofora on Holy Friday, prepare Easter eggs, and attend the Sunday Agape Service. The service project for April will be to continue with the assembling of Emergency Health/Hygiene Kits to be sent to the International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC). The IOCC offers emergency relief and development programs to those in need worldwide. They will distribute these kits to displaced families worldwide. Any parents who would like to volunteer to help in the classrooms with this service project or would like to donate supplies please me at pattytrant@earthlink.net Sunday School Calendar: April 3 Sunday of the Holy Cross April 10 St. John Climacus April 17 No Sunday school, spring break April 23 Saturday of Lazarus April 24 Palm Sunday and Sunday school resumes April 29 Holy Friday Have a blessed Sarakosti! 4 Philoptochos The Word - April 2016 The Bookstore In April, the Ladies Philoptochos will once again take on the joyful task of decorating our church with flowers for Easter. We will be placing flowers in the Narthex and near the altar, and, on several holy days we will frame the relevant Icon in flowers. What could be more beautiful than a flower? Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, The earth laughs in flowers and there is a Chinese Proverb that says: When you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one and a lily with the other. Flowers and beauty are an important component of worship for Orthodox Christians. According to The Pentecostarion, published by Holy Transfiguration Monastery, Brookline, Massachusetts, flowers are spiritualized forms that adorn, express, and clarify the sacramental Mysteries of the Church. Philoptochos Myrofori hopes the beauty of the Easter flowers we provide will help enhance your experience of the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Kali Anastasis! With Sisterly Love, Martha Coravos Philoptochos President High School Seniors Scholarship applications are now available at the church office. All high school students are encouraged to apply. The applicant must be a graduating high school senior whose family is a member in good standing, and must have been accepted for admission to an accredited post secondary school. Applications are due by May 1. Please call the church office at for an application. Parents, please let the church know if you have a child graduating high school or college. Dear Fellow Parishioners Growing up in a Greek household, the season of Lent was such a wonderful time. My Grandmother was living with us then and Yiayia Bessie was the point guard for our family team. The Church was her court and the Bible her game plan. We learned what every Church service and Bible reading meant throughout this wonderful awakening to Jesus teachings. And being a Yiayia and master of the kitchen, it followed that the fasting menu was front and center. I remember many variations of lentil soup. and the spinach and rice, the delicious plaki and the potato soup, salads with a myriad of vegetables and fruit. Since Easter is observed in the Spring when the dandelion greens sprout, we would spend hours in unknown parks and fields picking the precious greens to be cleaned and boiled on that same day. We knew that the next day, we would have dandelion sandwiches on dark bread and dripping with olive oil packed in our lunch boxes, much to the consternation of our fellow classmates. Instead of being embarrassed, Yiayia instilled in us a pride of our Greek heritage and its wonderful traditions, and my sister and brother and I found ourselves often being the center of discussions on the meaning of our Lenten season. These thoughts came to mind as I was looking through the Lenten Cookbook we have in the Bookstore. There are also many dishes appropriate for fasting in a few of the other cookbooks on our shelves. For those of us who didn t have the guidance of grandparents or who are new to the Orthodox faith, you would find these books helpful in deciding what is acceptable to partake during a Lenten fast. If all else fails, however, let me tell you about my favorite food during the fasting season a sandwich (again on dark bread) made with chunky peanut butter and fruit preserves with sliced bananas and sprinkled with slivered almonds. Oh my goodness, it was (and still is) the best! May we cherish this most meaningful time in the Greek Orthodox Church and partake of the nourishment of Jesus teachings and rejoice in his pending resurrection. Your friends in the bookstore, Elaine Demetroulakos Dotty Vlamis Metropolis Laity Award Each year, the Metropolis of Boston honors parishioners around New England who have been outstanding stewards, offering their time and talent to their churches and making a difference. 5 G O Y A Greetings GOYANS, Our last meeting featured a fun collection of Valentine activities! We have many exciting events for all to participate in leading up to Easter. April 3rd will be the annual Greek Independence Day Parade in Boston, a fun and spirited event to keep us engaged in our heritage! April 10th is our annual Lenten Luncheon and we need many GOYANS to help serve and clean up! We also need parent leaders to help with the teams. The Metropolis of Boston Spring camp is quickly approaching on April 15-April 17th. We always bring large, eager crowds to MBC events and we always look forward to them as they are a great way to grow in our faith and have a blast doing so! As usual on Lazarus Saturday, there will be palm cross making, an excellent opportunity for us all to relax while having friendly conversations as we make crosses! Our GOYA Bake sale will be April 24th and we look forward to selling lots of yummy goodies for all to enjoy! This is our only fundraiser and GOYA greatly appreciates everyones support! Finally, on Good Friday after Vespers, we will be wrapping the red eggs for Easter! We have a very fun filled month and we hope to see you all at our meetings which are held on the 3rd Sunday of every month! (No prior attendance is necessary). Any questions regarding the above information please contact any of our officers or our GOYA advisor Connie Vergados at connieve@comcast.net. In Christ, Costas Vergados O Lord and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of sloth, despair, lust of power, and idle talk. But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to Thy servant. Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own transgressions, and not to judge my brother, for blessed art Thou, unto ages of ages. Amen. -Prayer of St Ephrem The Word - April 2016 JOY and Junior GOYA We had wonderful March meetings talking about Lent and preparing for Easter. The children learned that we show our love for Jesus by going to church, praying, fasting, reading the Bible and listening to God. These are things we need to do not only during Lent, but the entire year. Our next outing and meetings planned are: Saturday of Lazarus Retreat Saturday, April 23rd at the Church. Breakfast will be served following the service in the community center and the retreat will begin immediately after. Good Friday Retreat Friday, April 29th at the Church. More details to follow. All children ages 7 9 in grades 1 4 are welcome to attend all the JOY meetings and outings. All children in the 5th and 6th grades are welcome to attend all the Junior GOYA meetings and outings. We look forward to the start of Great Lent! Have a blessed Sarakosti! Patty Trant Sunday of Orthodoxy 5
