A member of the Hospitality Committee will be happy to contact you about our parishes, fill you in on all the things happening in the parish, and welcome you to our community! WORDS of WISDOM from OUR HOLY FATHER Don t Be Afraid of God s Gift of Newness! Newness often makes us fearful, including the newness which God brings us, the newness which God asks of us. We are like the Apostles in the Gospel: often we would prefer to hold on to our own security We are afraid of God s surprises He always surprises us. Let us not be closed to the newness that God wants to bring into our lives! + POPE FRANCIS NEW PARISHIONER REGISTRATION If you would like to register as a new parishioner of the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport, please contact the pastoral office or complete this form and deposit it in the offertory basket. All are welcome! Name: Address: Phone: OUR PASTOR S MESSAGE Father s Day On Father s Day, we celebrate and honor our fathers, godfathers, grandfathers, uncles, and others who have been mentors or father figures in our lives. This weekend, however, I would like to honor a different kind of father, Father Eugene Alves. Father Alves has been a priest for more than fifty years. Since 1974, he has faithfully and lovingly served the people of Our Lady of Good Voyage as priest, pastor, and shepherd. With a firm but caring hand, he has steered Good Voyage through the joys, tears, and challenges of parish life. Father Alves has been the heart and soul of Our Lady of Good Voyage for four decades. He leaves a lasting legacy upon which we can build a bright future! Before Father Alves enjoys some well-deserved peace, quiet, and rest, the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport will honor him with a celebration dinner on Wednesday, June 18th at Our Lady's Parish Hall. It will be a bittersweet moment for laughs, tears, and the sharing of many memories. However, this is not a formal farewell! Father Alves has graciously offered to help us on occasion as a Pastor Emeritus, or as I jokingly call him, our Vavó, which means grandfather in Portuguese. Thank you, Father Alves! May our Lord Jesus Christ, the Eternal High Priest, continue to strengthen you in your priestly ministry and may our Lady of Good Voyage continue to guide your journey on the seas of life. Happy Father's Day! Peace & blessings, Father Jim Comments: Yes, please send me offertory envelopes! 2

4 Youth Faith Formation A YEAR FILLED with GOD's GRACE As we look back to Palm Sunday, our last day of Faith Formation, I would like to acknowledge our students good work accomplished throughout the year and the generous support from our families toward St. Vincent de Paul s food pantry, the Action Shelter lunch program, Catholic Charies and our mission to Cevicos. This past Sunday we finished up our celebrations of First Holy Communion, and I cannot imagine any of our success without the dedication and preparation of all our catechists! The commitment our teachers have imparts to our children the love of Christ and our Catholic heritage. I am deeply grateful and honored to be side by side with our volunteers in prayer and support. Without our Catechists, our children would be less enriched in faith. WITNESS TO TRUTH Witness to Truth is a dynamic overnight leadership experience for Catholic high school teens who have completed grade 9, 10,,11 or 12. Meet teens from all over the Archdiocese, grow deeper in your faith, learn about and acquire the knowledge and skills to be an effective leader, and have a great time doing it. Witness to Truth will be held at St. Thecia s Retreat Center in Billerica July The cost is $395. Contact Kathy Stebbins at CYO GOLF TOURNAMENT The Archdiocese of Boston s 75th Annual CYO Golf Tournament will be held at the Ponkapoag Golf Course in Canton July Registration is now open. The entry fee is $45 if paid by July 11. Contact Gail Mattulina at or CYOBoston@rcab.org. PASTORAL CARE of the SICK CATECHISTS NEEDED If you have ever worked with children in coaching, teaching, tutoring (public or private) and would like to share your faith with our children in elementary, middle school or high school, begin the journey and become a catechist. We will take small steps with you and explore first the process and then some training. Come, inspire, encourage and enrich the faith of our youth, for the Kingdom of God is at hand, and you are a baptized gift to our children. I have found personally that one of the best ways to enrich your own faith is to teach. By sharing our faith, the spirit of God goes deeper, and the fruits of love, joy and peace emerge with passion! A WORD to PARENTS Are there any who are sick among you? This question, found in the Letter of Saint James, gives the response that the sick should call for the priests of the Church who are to pray over and anoint the sick with oil in the name of the Lord. Never hesitate to call our Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport s priests to ask for prayer and for the Sacrament of the Sick prior to surgery or when diagnosed with serious illness. This Sacrament is not to be looked upon as the "Last Rites" but as a powerful instrument of God's healing presence. Please avail yourself of this gift! Also, if someone is dying or near death, please call the parish for pastoral assistance. Here at Holy Family Parish we now offer the Sacrament of the Sick on the Third Sunday of the Month alternating between St. Ann Church and St. Joachim Church and at other times by request. For the 2014/2015 Faith Formation Year, new registrations will be sent out in June. It is important for your children to reunite with their classmates and continue their faith formation. Don t wait until the end of summer to register. When the form arrives in the mail, return it right away. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION PHOTOS First Communion photos have arrived and may be picked up in the Parish Office during regular business hours. 4
