1 ARCHDIOCESE OF DUBUQUE Summer, 2013 Edition Vol. 25, No.2 OFFICE OF WORSHIP M. Peggy Lovrien M.A., Director Susan Black, Secretary ONE TWO Deacon Jerry Jorgensen (Resurrection) baptized the baby by immersion. and Eucharist is the one sacrament we can repeat often. (The notes go on with the explanation of symbols of water, fire, oil, and presentation of the baptized to the assembly). THREE There are times when the parish music director would love to send home the rehearsal time spent on one or two vocal lines so choir members (or cantors), without piano skills, could practice at home. Now they can because there s an APP for that! We welcome Archbishop Jackels (JAKE-els) to the Archdiocese of Dubuque. With faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and with the love of God in my heart, I do accept the pastoral care of the people of God in the Archdiocese of Dubuque, he said to the pope s representative, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano on May 30, I resolve to serve faithfully the spiritual needs of this local church. In his homily at the Mass of Installation, Archbishop Jackels urged people to consider a vocation to the priesthood, religious life, and lay professional ministry. He also praised the work of people who labor in the church and their communities. The Cathedral of St. Raphael Photo compliments of Resurrection Parish One couple shared the notes they took from a baptism class: Our home is called the domestic church where our table is a sacred place for family story-telling, prayer, breaking and sharing bread, and reconciliation. Mom and Dad - like the priest on Sunday - convene the children (brothers and sisters) for conversation, conversion, prayer, and meal. Our goal as Catholic parents is to help our children cherish the family story telling and meals together and learn the life story of Jesus (catechists at home in daily life). There are many stories from the Old Testament and New Testament in the Bible we can tell at the dinner table, too. Meal is a good place for casual catechesis. For example, we can teach our kids that there are 7 sacraments and 4 evangelists by making a one-minute game of it at every Sunday meal. We can teach our kids to make the sign of the cross before every meal and dare to do so in public, too, to evangelize others around us. Baptism is the entry into Catholic spiritual life, Confirmation is the seal of baptism, 1 One APP for android and iphones is called Voice Studio. It s free. You can record a tenor line (with or without piano) and send it, via , to the tenor s cell phone. He can listen to it and practice at home! Go to your cell phone app store and you will see there are all kinds of apps that do this! Also, have you looked at Forscore, ($6.99) the app that helps to load music? It is worth the price. GIA publications have its accompaniment books ready to load onto your ipad through this app. Musicians across the nation are using it and LOVE it! No more lugging heavy books around and you can put your prelude postlude music in it. FOUR Many believe that there is a rubric in the order of Mass directing the priest, deacon, or EMC to go to the tabernacle before the communion procession to get pre-consecrated hosts out for the distribution of communion. Actually, there is no

2 such rubric (on purpose) and the continued practice confuses our understanding of Eucharist and Communion. Is there a difference? Yes. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal talks about receiving the Body of Christ from the altar during Mass - a discussion that started as far back as 1742 when Pope Benedict XIV highlighted the importance of receiving Holy Communion in a way to insure that the one and the same sacrifice is shared by the priest and the faithful (Eucharist). We reserve consecrated hosts to provide Communion for the homebound and for the purpose of adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. Reservation is not intended to provide a supply of hosts for Mass. Those who receive Communion need to understand that they participate in the Eucharist and receive Communion. With the priest, they pray the Eucharistic Prayer and witness transubstantiation. Hosts in the tabernacle are not meant to be brought to the altar for Communion. Experienced sacristans learn to estimate attendance at Mass and set out the number of hosts needed for the Presentation of Gifts per Mass. If a Communion distributor runs low during communion, the distributor can use hosts from another distributor or break the last few hosts to share. If it appears that there will not be sufficient hosts even if some are broken, one may retrieve some from the tabernacle but this should be unusual. If there are hosts after the distribution of communion, they are put in the tabernacle. (There is a rubric for this: GIRM, 162) The daily Mass sacristan should monitor the amount of hosts in the tabernacle during the week for weekday Masses and hosts needed for Communion to the Sick. The nature of the liturgical sign demands that the faithful are able to partake of one bread and drink of the one cup sanctified at that Mass and thus become one body, one spirit in Christ. (GIRM, 85, 283. See also GIRM, 27) FIVE Summer time is a good time to make an outline plan for the coming liturgical year, too. Assuming all the hymns, psalms, and acclamations are chosen for the whole summer already (a worthy goal to complete by June first), liturgy planners can organize seasonal planning for If you don t have the primary books on hand needed for planning check the web page: for readings listed per date, and for music suggestions per week. There are so many free resources at our fingertips. Additionally, consider this is a good time to rejuvenate and enliven the parish liturgy. Consider: -Why do we gather? -What makes Catholic liturgy different from other Christian gatherings? -What is unique about the Eucharist? -Are we using ample sized symbols for rite and ritual? Can the person in the back pew see, hear, smell, and feel the power of our symbols? -Why would a teen want to come to Mass even if parents don t? -How well do we teach every parishioner to be hospitable at Mass and at parish functions? -What corners of our church and halls need to be de-cluttered, cleaned, oiled, washed, or painted? -What do our bulletin boards correspond? Are some notices out of date or inhospitable? 2 SIX The Worship Office is planning to convene pianists for a session of LITURGICAL PIANO SHARE! We plan to share music we use for preludes and postludes (when there is no choir or instrumental group) and to talk about the use of psalms in the liturgy.. The first session will be in Dubuque (because we have a willing sponsor). If you would like to sponsor a session in your area soon, the Worship Office DBQCWH@arch.pvt.k12.ia.us SEVEN Have you checked out the online resources for your lectors? Here is a list: LectorPrep.org this is a good site for Sunday and Holy Day proclamations. Richard S. Vosko, Ph.D., Hon. AIA, a Catholic priest of the Diocese of Albany, has been a sacred space planner since You can read about the models of church and renovation/building at this web site: His award winning work is continuously acknowledged for liturgical and design excellence. The title of his book is God s House is Our House: Re-imagining the Environment for Worship (Collegeville: Liturgical Press, 2006). His website is NINE Up and coming leaders of the Church: Look at Michael Banwarth s way to evangelize. (from: YouTube invitation at 3 7LQIfdGsko Do you have a young liturgical leader in your parish that you would like to feature? Send the Worship Office a note, picture, and description for publication in the next Liturgy and Life. TEN The North American Forum on the Catechumenate will close its doors this month in Washington, D.C. after 30 years of faithful service to the Church. Victoria Tufano served as a team member for the Forum for more than 25 years and wrote about the Forum s work in the July issue of Catechumenate. She said that the Forum, under the care and guidance of Mr. Jim Schellman, was the driving force in the restoration of the Catechumenate in the United States and Canada. It led the way to understanding that liturgy needs catechesis and that catechesis leads to and proceeds from liturgy. It encouraged ministers of initiation to trust the Church s scripture and liturgy to communicate the faith and to help catechumens make the connection between liturgy and life. It emphasized that Christian life is lived in community and that we are baptized not only for ourselves but also for the good of the world. Leaders learned that Catholics were formed for and by apostolic works through its

4 communal prayer. New leaders were well formed in RCIA leadership and their knowledge was rooted in the Church documents, particularly, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. The Archdiocese of Dubuque was deeply enriched by the ministry of the North American Forum on the Catechumenate co-sponsoring RCIA workshops every other year with speakers and resources from the Forum. We are grateful to Mr. Jim Schellman and his staff for their wonderful ministry to the Church. In the meantime, the mission continues. This August, the Diocese of Springfield, MO is hosting a presentation on The RCIA for Children and Implications for All Sacramental Catechesis. The presenter is the pastoral minister and author, Rita Burns Sensemen. The workshop will be on Friday and Saturday, August 2/3, 2013 at Holy Family Parish, 410 South State Street, Litchfield IL. For more information, contact Vicki Walker, Office for Worship and the Catechumenate, Springfield IL, Phone: (217) ext 166, worship@dio.org And, this Fall the Archdiocese of Dubuque will offer RCIA101 Basics for Team Leaders. Watch your for dates and times. EVENTS AND GROUPS The Archdiocesan Chorale is a liturgical choir that enables the People of God to sing the liturgy. The Chorale sings at the Rite of Election, Chrism Mass, and Ordinations. The Chorale has openings for tenors and basses. It rehearses once a month at the Cathedral in Dubuque, the first Tuesday of each month. The Archdiocesan Chorale Board announces the first Archdiocesan Choir Festival to be held October 19, 2013 at Sacred Heart Church in Waterloo. The festival will gather parish leaders of liturgical music from across the Archdiocese to form a large choir with the Archdiocesan Chorale members. Sr. LaDonna Manternach, BVM, DMA, associate professor and chair of the Clarke University Music Department. Sister LaDonna is the director of the Archdiocesan Chorale. Plan to send one or two of your liturgical music leaders to the NPM convention next month. The gathering is a great stimulus to raising the bar on music for the liturgy. Scholarships are also available and with four people sharing a hotel room, the stay is more affordable! Invest in your musically talented parishioners NOW for the sake of the future. Washington, DC July 29 - August 2, at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel Convention Registration Form: You can print your form or register on-line at MAILBOX Q. We have found that our paperback hymnal doesn t last well throughout the year and begins to look shabby three months into the year. Are there any options for us to consider? We also need English and Spanish. You are in luck. A new hymnal for English and Spanish speaking parishes, called Oramos Cantando / We Pray in Song was just published by GIA Publications. Look at it online and review how a hardcover hymnal can save the parish lots of money! ( It is a beautiful gold hardcover edition with 450 hymns in both languages. All the psalms in the lectionary are also in both languages. Imagine singing psalm 121, Our Help Comes from the Lord alternatively in English and Spanish, El Auxilio Me Viene del Senor. 4 It could help both language groups appreciate the beauty of each language through one song. Other pieces in both languages are America the Beautiful, Take and Eat, On Eagle s Wings, I Am the Bread of Life, Immaculate Mary, and one of my favorites, Vienen con Alegria /We Com with Great Rejoicing. Of course, all the Christmas songs are included. (Imagine Silent Night in English and Spanish!). WEB RESOURCES Free Choir music is on-line for SSA, TTB (all men), SAB, and SATB. Go to Remember to check for music suggestions per week. Their list is huge! Parish leadership options: Parish web sites to check out: Ordo: ineordo.htm The Roman Catholic Diocese of Salford, England, has put the ordo online. Although it contains notes related to the Catholic Church in England, the universal notes are the same. Liturgy planners and musicians might find this helpful. Sacristans notice that the weekday lectionary, based on a two year cycle, run parallel with the odd and even number years: I for 2013 and II for 2014, I for 2015, II for 2016 and so on. The Lectionary cycles for Sunday

5 are on a three-year cycle: Sunday Cycle YEAR C December, 2012 to November 24, 2013 Sunday Cycle YEAR A December 1, 2013 to November 23, 2014 Sunday Cycle YEAR B will start the first Sunday of Advent, 2014 and continue through PIPE ORGANS GEMS FROM OUR ANCESTORS File copy photo Compliments of Joyce Meyer Photography St. Wenceslaus, Spillville, is the oldest Czech Catholic Church in the United States. The church, built by 70 Czech families, was completed in The organ they added in 1876, is the work of J. G. Pfeffer, Organ Builder, St. Louis, MO. The organ was played by Antonin Dvořák (a Czech-American composer) during his stay in Spillville the summer of He composed the New World Symphony on the organ. Dvořák himself, was an organist and also the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892 to The Conservatory, a New York based group concerned with music education and performance in American education, was closed in (See, to learn more about Antonin Dvořák and qyfeynxqo to listen to the New World Symphony. You will see and hear the sounds of the Iowa prairie anew.). Compliments of Joyce Meyer Photography In 1992, the Spillville Historic Group began fund raising events for the restoration of the organ. The Dobson Pipe Organ Builders of Lake City, IA did the project (one of their new organs is the Los Angeles, CA Cathedral organ). Although the organ had suffered indignities in its 120 years, it was essentially intact. The case, the mechanical keys, stop actions, the windchests and virtually all of the pipes are original, and in excellent condition. The bellows was completely re-leathered and pipes were carefully repaired. All pipes were carefully re-regulated so they would speak clearly and in tune. The organ case was stripped by Spillville volunteers and regrained by an artist from the Conrad Schmitt Studios of New Berlin, Wisconsin. (The organ s original grained casework and gilded front pipes had been covered in several coats of paint, something that should never be done to pipes.) The organ was restored and rededicated on 25 August 1996 during Mass celebrated by Archbishop Jerome Hanus. It now has a Historic Organ Citation from the Organ Historical Society, as an instrument of exceptional historic merit, worthy of preservation. Doris Thompson (pictured above) has been a minister of music playing the organ for 40 years. Thank you Doris for your faithful ministry!
