And Jesus coming, spoke to them, saying: power is given to me in heaven and in earth. Going therefore, teach ye all nations: baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. 9 RITES OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION The Parents and Godparents with the Child to be baptized, stand before the Bishop, who addresses them saying: Dearly beloved, forasmuch as all men are conceived and born in sin: and that our Saviour Christ saith, None can enter into the kingdom of God, except he be regenerate and born anew of Water and of the Holy Ghost : I beseech you to call upon God the Father, through our Lord Jesus Christ, that of his bounteous mercy he will grant to this Child that thing which by nature he cannot have; that he may be baptized with Water and the Holy Ghost, and received into Christ's holy Church, and be made a lively member of the same. You have brought this child here to be baptized; you have prayed that our Lord Jesus Christ will be pleased to receive him, to cleanse him, and to sanctify him. Our Lord hath promised in his gospel to grant all these things that you have prayed for; which promise he, for his part, will most surely keep and perform. You, on your part, must undertake on behalf of this infant three things: first, that he will renounce the devil and all his works; secondly, that he will constantly believe God s holy word; and thirdly, that he will obediently keep his commandments. The Candidates for Confirmation also gather before the Bishop, who addresses them saying: Dearly beloved in the Lord, the Scripture teacheth that a special gift of the Holy Spirit is bestowed through laying on of hands with prayer. And forasmuch as this gift cometh from God alone, let us that are here present pray to almighty God, that he will strengthen with his Holy Spirit in Confirmation those who in Baptism were made his children. You, then, who are to be confirmed must now declare before this congregation that you are steadfastly purposed, with the help of this gift, to lead your life in the faith of Christ and in obedience to God's will and commandments; and must openly acknowledge yourselves bound to fulfil the Christian duties to which your Baptism hath pledged you.

10 The Promises Addressing the Parents and Godparents, and Confirmation Candidates, the Bishop asks: Do you each therefore either for yourselves, or in the name of this Child renounce the devil and all his works, the vain pomp and glory of the world, with all covetous desires of the same, and the sinful desires of the flesh, so that thou wilt not follow nor be led by them? Answer: I renounce them all. Wilt thou then obediently keep God s holy will and commandments, and walk in them all the days of thy life? Answer: I will endeavour to do so, God being my helper. Addressing the Parents and Godparents alone, the Bishop asks: Do you in the name of this Child profess the Christian faith? Answer: I do. Prayers for the Child O Merciful God, grant that the old Adam in this child may be so buried, that the new man may be raised up in him. Amen. Grant that all evil desires of the flesh may die in him, and that all things belonging to the Spirit may live and grow in him. Amen. Grant that he may have power and strength, to have victory, and to triumph against the devil, the world, and the flesh. Amen. Grant that whosoever is here dedicated to thee by our office and ministry may also be endued with heavenly virtues, and everlastingly rewarded, through thy mercy, O blessed Lord God, who dost live, and govern all things, world without end. Amen. The Bishop signs the Child with the oil of Catechumens: Christ claims you for his own. Receive the sign of the cross. The Bishop, together with the Parents and Godparents with the Child, moves to the Font.

11 Blessing of the Water Stretching his hands over the Water the Bishop says: Almighty ever-living God, whose most dearly beloved Son Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of our sins, did shed out of his most precious side both water and blood; and gave commandment to his disciples, that they should go teach all nations, and baptize them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Regard, we beseech thee, the supplications of thy Congregation; sanctify + this water to the mystical washing away of sin; and grant that this child, now to be baptized therein, may receive the fulness of thy grace, and ever remain in the number of thy faithful and elect children; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Profession of Faith Addressing the whole Congregation the Bishop says: Brothers and sisters, I ask you to profess together with these Candidates, and the Parents and Godparents of this Child the faith of the Church. Do you believe and trust in God the Father? I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. Do you believe and trust in his Son, Jesus Christ? I believe in Jesus Christ his only-begotten Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day rose again from the dead, he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from thence he shall come again to judge the quick and the dead. Do you believe and trust in his Son, Jesus Christ? I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy Catholick Church; the Communion of Saints; the Forgiveness of sins; the Resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Addressing the Parents and Godparents, and Confirmation Candidates, the Bishop says: May God, who has given you the desire to keep his holy will and commandments, give you also the strength to walk in the same all the days of your life. Amen.

12 The Baptism The Bishop takes the Child into his hands, and shall say to the Godparents, Name this Child. Then naming it after them he baptizes the Child in the Baptismal Water saying: Charles Jerome Ajax, I baptize thee in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. Then the Bishop shall make a Cross upon the Child s forehead with holy Chrism, saying: We receive this child into the congregation of Christ s flock, and do sign him with the sign of the Cross, in token that hereafter he shall not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified, fight courageously under his banner against sin, the world, and the devil, and continue Christ s faithful soldier and servant unto his life s end. Amen. The Bishop sprinkles all Candidates for Confirmation with water from the Baptismal Font, and after them the whole Congregation. Meanwhile, the choir sings the following: I saw water flowing from the right side of the Temple, eluia! It brought God s light and His salvation. And the people sang in joyful praise, eluia! O give thanks unto the Lord for he is gracious, because His mercy endureth forever. Words: adapted from Ezekiel 47 and Psalm 118 Music: Plainsong After all have been sprinkled with Baptismal Water the Bishop says: We yield thee hearty thanks, most merciful Father, that it hath pleased thee to regenerate us with thy Holy Spirit, to receive us for thine own children by adoption, and to make us members of thy holy Church. Grant O Lord that being buried with Christ in his death, we may also be made partakers of his resurrection; so that, serving thee here in newness of life, we may finally, with the rest of thy holy Church, be inheritors of thine everlasting kingdom; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Parents and Godparents, with the Child, return to their places.

13 The Confirmation The Bishop moves to the place of Confirmation, and the Candidates stand before him. Bishop Bishop Bishop Our help is in the Name of the Lord; Who hath made heaven and earth. Blessed be the Name of the Lord; Henceforth, world without end. Lord, hear our prayers; And let our cry come unto thee. Let us pray. Almighty and ever-living God, who hast vouchsafed to regenerate these thy servants by Water and the Holy Ghost, and hast given unto them forgiveness of all their sins: Strengthen them, we beseech thee, O Lord, with the Holy Ghost the Comforter, and daily increase in them thy manifold gifts of grace; the spirit of wisdom and understanding; the spirit of counsel and inward strength; the spirit of knowledge and true godliness; and fill them, O Lord, with the spirit of thy holy fear, now and for ever. Amen. The Bishop anoints each Candidate with holy Chrism, and lays his hands on the Candidate s head, saying: Confirm, O Lord, thy servant N. with thy Holy Spirit. Amen. After all the Candidates have been confirmed the Bishop says: Defend, O Lord, these thy servants with thy heavenly grace, that they may continue thine for ever; and daily increase in thy Holy Spirit, more and more, until they come unto thy everlasting kingdom. Amen.

14 Intercessions The Sub-deacon leads the congregation in the intercessions for the Church and the world. The response to each bidding is Hear our prayer. Confession The Bishop invites the people to confess their sins, kneeling: Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word and deed, against thy divine majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us; the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Bishop pronounces the Absolution to which all respond: Amen. The Peace God has made us one in Christ. He has set his seal upon us and, as a pledge of what is to come, has given the Spirit to dwell in our hearts. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit. 15 Prayer over the Gifts Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable unto God, the Father almighty: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at thy hands, for the praise and glory of his Name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church. The Celebrant prays a Collect. reply: Amen The Eucharistic Prayer The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up unto the Lord. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. It is meet and right so to do. The Proper Preface follows, which leads into the Sanctus and Benedictus: Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt caeli et terra Gloria tua. Hosanna in Excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini: Hosanna in Excelsis. At the conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer all sing: Amen. Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts, Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee O Lord most high. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest. Distribution of Communion Please come forward to kneel or stand if you are unable. The Church of England welcomes communicant members of all Churches who have been baptized with water in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, to receive Holy Communion in faith, hope and charity.
