Sermon The Rt Rev d Jonathan Goodall Bishop of Ebbsfleet The Liturgy of Confirmation The Candidates for Confirmation gather before the Bishop, who addresses them saying: Dearly beloved in the Lord, the Scripture teacheth us that a special gift of the Holy Spirit is bestowed through laying on of hands with prayer. And forasmuch as this gift cometh from God alone, let us that are here present pray to Almighty God, that he will strengthen

11 with his Holy Spirit in Confirmation those who in Baptism were made his children. You, then, who are to be confirmed must now declare before this congregation that you are stedfastly purposed, with the help of this gift, to lead your life in the faith of Christ and in obedience to God's will and commandments; and must openly acknowledge yourselves bound to fulfil the Christian duties to which your Baptism hath pledged you. Do ye here renounce the devil and all his works, the vain pomp and glory of the world, with all covetous desires of the same, and the carnal desires of the flesh, so that thou wilt not follow nor be led by them? The Candidates answer: I renounce them all. Addressing the whole Congregation, the Bishop says: Brothers and sisters, I ask you to profess together with these candidates the faith of the Church: Do ye believe and trust in God the Father? I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. Do ye believe and trust in his Son, Jesus Christ? I believe in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day rose again from the dead, he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come again to judge the quick and the dead. Do ye believe and trust in the Holy Ghost? I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy Catholick Church; the Communion of Saints; the Forgiveness of sins; the Resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Addressing the Candidates only, the Bishop says: May God, who has given you the desire to keep his holy will and commandments, give you also the strength to walk in the same all the days of your life.

12 Amen The Bishop sprinkles all Candidates for confirmation and after them the whole Congregation. Meanwhile, the choir sings the following: I saw water flowing from the right side of the Temple, eluia! It brought God s light and His salvation. And the people sang in joyful praise, eluia! O give thanks unto the Lord for he is gracious, because His mercy endureth forever. Words: adapted from Ezekiel 47 and Psalm 118 Music: Plainsong The Bishop says: Our help is in the Name of the Lord; Who hath made heaven and earth. Blessed be the Name of the Lord; Henceforth world without end. Lord, hear our prayer. And let our cry come unto thee. The Bishop extends his hands over those to be confirmed and says: Almighty and ever-living God, who hast vouchsafed to regenerate these thy servants by Water and the Holy Ghost, and hast given unto them forgiveness of all their sins: Strengthen them, we beseech thee, O Lord, with the Holy Ghost the Comforter, and daily increase in them thy manifold gifts of grace; the spirit of wisdom and understanding; the spirit of counsel and inward strength; the spirit of knowledge and true godliness; and fill them, O Lord, with the spirit of thy holy fear, now and for ever. Amen. The Bishop anoints each candidate with the oil of Chrism, and laying his hands on the candidate s head, says: Confirm, O Lord, thy servant, N, with thy Holy Spirit. Amen.

13 After all the Candidates have been confirmed the bishop says: Defend, O Lord, these thy Servants with thy heavenly grace, that they may continue thine for ever, and daily increase in thy Holy Spirit, more and more, until they come unto thy everlasting kingdom. Amen. The Bishop and the newly-confirmed return to their places. Intercessions The Sub-deacon leads the congregation in the intercessions for the Church and the world. The response to each bidding is Hear our prayer. Confession The Bishop invites the people to confess their sins, kneeling: Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word and deed, against thy divine majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us; the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Bishop pronounces the Absolution to which all respond: Amen. The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit. 14 Offertory Hymn - Sung by 1. Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven, to earth come down, fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown. Jesus, thou art all compassion, pure, unbounded love thou art; visit us with thy salvation, enter every trembling heart. 2. Come, almighty to deliver, let us all thy life receive; suddenly return, and never, nevermore thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above, pray, and praise thee without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love.

It is meet and right so to do. The Proper Preface follows, which leads into the Sanctus and Benedictus: Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt caeli et terra Gloria tua. Hosanna in Excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini: Hosanna in Excelsis. At the conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer all sing: Amen. Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts, Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee O Lord most high. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.

Distribution of Communion Please come forward to kneel or stand if you are unable. The Church of England welcomes communicant members of all Churches who have been baptized with water in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, to receive Holy Communion in faith, hope and charity. If you would like to receive a blessing, please fold your arms when approached or carry your order of service with you. During the Distribution of Communion, the Choir sing a motet Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, and lighten with celestial fire. Thou the anointing Spirit art, who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart. Thy blessed unction from above is comfort, life, and fire of love. Enable with perpetual light the dullness of our blinded sight. Anoint and cheer our soiled face with the abundance of thy grace. Keep far from foes, give peace at home: where thou art guide, no ill can come. Teach us to know the Father, Son, and thee, of both, to be but One, that through the ages all along, this may be our endless song: Praise to thy eternal merit, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 21 NOTICES Daily Offices begin with Matins at 7.40am (Fridays we begin with the Litany at 7.30am) with mass celebrated at 8.00am, followed by a light breakfast. A ten minute pause for prayer and reflections takes place in the chapel at noon during the week.
