2 Welcome to the St. Thomas family! We are in Ordinary Time and the liturgical color for this part of the year is green. Green really fits this season because it is all about growth in the Spirit and for being nurtured. It is the kind of growth and nurturing that creates abundant fruit. In fact, in St. Paul s Letter to the Galatians, Paul tells us that if we welcome the presence of the Holy Spirit within us, then the Spirit will produce fruit in us. The fruit of the Spirit, he says, is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Gal. 5:22 23). Through baptism, these virtues, these gifts of the Spirit, are planted in our soul. It is during this season of Ordinary Time that we work on cultivating the gifts of the Spirit. We re so glad you re here. If you re visiting today, here are a few helpful things to know: We are a spiritual community. We gather for worship to nurture and grow our faith and trust in Jesus Christ, our guide, companion and friend. We welcome you into this community wherever you may be on your spiritual journey. Today we have one morning prayer service at 10 am. Next week we return to our regular summer schedule with two worship services: 8:30 and 10 a.m. The early service uses Rite I with a more quiet and contemplative spoken liturgy. The later service uses Rite II, chanted liturgy and special music, plus nursery care is provided. This bulletin will guide you through the service feel free to join in the unison responses (said or sung) and whenever you see the word People. This cross symbol indicates an appropriate place to make the sign of the cross, if you so desire. Simply touch your forehead, then chest, then left and right shoulders wherever it appears. If you are visiting today, please take a moment to sign our guest register and introduce yourself to the greeters. If you have a particular need for comfort or prayer, please fill out one of the prayer cards in the pew racks and place the card in the offering plate (or hand to an usher). And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy. Silence may be kept. The Lessons All sit The First Reading 1 Thessalonians 2:9-13 Reader A reading from Paul s first letter to the Thessalonians. You remember our labor and toil, brothers and sisters; we worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of you while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. You are witnesses, and God also, how pure, upright, and blameless our conduct was toward you believers. As you know, we dealt with each one of you like a father with his children, urging and encouraging you and pleading that you lead a life worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory. We also constantly give thanks to God for this, that when you received the word of God that you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word but as what it really is, God's word, which is also at work in you believers. 5

They love to have the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have people call them rabbi. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant.
