2 Setting New English Folk Mass Collect God our redeemer, who prepared the Blessed Virgin Mary to be the mother of your Son: grant that, as she looked for his coming as our saviour, so we may be ready to greet him when he comes again as our judge; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Gospel Reading Luke 1: In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary s greeting, the child leapt in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leapt for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her by the Lord. Sunday Club Nativity Play (sermon, intercessions & creed are omitted) 1. v1 Probationers only Once in royal David's city stood a lowly cattle shed, where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child. He came down to earth from heaven, who is God and Lord of all, and his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall; with the poor, the scorned, the lowly, lived on earth our Saviour holy. 2

It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold: "Peace on the earth, good will to men, from heaven's all-gracious King." The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing. For lo! the days are hastening on, by prophets seen of old, when, with the ever-circling years shall come the time foretold, when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendours fling, and the whole world give back the song which now the angels sing. 3. 7 BARRIE MORLEY RIP Barrie, who sadly died last week, was one of the first volunteers of the Education Centre, and then a keen volunteer in the Cathedral Library. His funeral will take place at the Cathedral on Tuesday 29 December at 11am, followed immediately by a reception in the library. All are welcome. JILL THOMSON RIP The funeral will be on Tuesday 29 December at 2pm and anyone who knew Jill is welcome to attend. CHRISTMAS GIVING FROM SERVICES Ten percent of giving at all our services goes to charity. The charity chosen this Christmas is Médecins Sans Frontier. Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is the world's leading emergency medical humanitarian aid organisation. They provide emergency assistance to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics and natural or man-made disasters, without discrimination and irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation. They work in over 60 countries and go to places where others cannot or choose not to go. The balance of giving goes towards the cost of the services and the upkeep of this ancient Cathedral. GIFT AID ENVELOPES PLEASE GIVE NAME AND ADDRESS The counters have reported that many people are using Gift Aid envelopes without writing their name and address. Please supply these, because without them we can t claim Gift Aid. SAFEGUARDING TRAINING Thank you to everyone who has booked and attended one of these sessions. There are a number of people who have not yet been able to attend and we have extra dates planned for the new year. These are: 7 January at 3pm 9 February at 12noon 15 February at 10am 23 February at 2.30pm Please let Maggie York know if you would like to attend one of these sessions. 8 PHOTOGRAPHY DURING SERVICES As we welcome many more visitors and families into the Cathedral during Advent and in the run-up to Christmas, we would like to remind everyone that photography and any form of recording is not allowed during rehearsals, services or concerts. General photography of the building is always welcome, but we discourage photographs of people undertaking activities in the Cathedral, especially children. ALBAN S ANGELS A unique Christmas gift if you are looking for a special gift please consider joining Alban s Angels for a friend or relative or in memory/celebration of a loved one. For a donation of 25 or more a hand-carved wooden angel will be added, carrying a name or short message of your choice, to the growing angel clouds in the Cathedral. As a thank you, your name will be included on our dedicated website and you will receive a special card to give to the recipient of your gift. All proceeds raised will go towards the Cathedral s major development project Alban, Britain s First Saint. HELP NEEDED FOR TOWER TOURS the Cathedral offers tours through the year and to meet the demand, we particularly need to increase our numbers of tail enders to work with the Guides.
