The Parish draws people from isola on to community, from searching to awakening, from indifference to concern, from selfishness to meaningful service, from fear in the midst of adversity to faith and hope in God. The community of Most Holy Redeemer shares God s compassionate love with all people. The parish offers a spiritual home to all: senior ci zens and youth; single people and families; those who are straight, gay, lesbian, and transgendered; the healthy and the sick, par cularly persons with HIV disease. As a parish community, we celebrate God s loving presence in our lives. In worship and sacrament, especially the Eucharist, we are nurtured and challenged to extend God s kingdom of jus ce, truth, love and peace by growing in the spirit of Jesus, the Most Holy Redeemer.

Fr. Ma s Message Our God is not a God of the dead, but a God of the living, for to God all are alive (Luke 20:38). The King of the world will raise us up to live forever (2 MC 7:9). As the end of the liturgical year draws near our readings are focused the theme of eternal life. For the Jewish people in Biblical mes, this was a very new and radical theme. I think the more we live, the more we grow in awareness of just how flee ng life is. Naturally, the longer we live, the more familiar we become with thoughts of death. The beauty of our faith, and of how we hear Jesus promise of eternal life is that we do not see this familiarity with death as a morbid or nega ve thing. No, we strive to see death in a more posi ve light, for reflec ng on death can result in a deeper love of life, allowing us to see every day as a gi, and to live in gra tude for this gi. In Luke s Gospel Jesus tells us that death completely transcends the life we know now. Death is a passage to new life. This we believe. We profess it every Sunday in the words at the end of the Creed, We look forward to the resurrec on of the dead, and the life of the world to come. I knew a Dad who found much comfort and was able to comfort his young family with the faith that his love would never die. Even though his body was dying from the cancer within him, he would con nue to love and parent them from heaven. I met a young man who was very near death. He was so young, yet so not afraid. He told me he found great comfort, strength and courage knowing that his granddad would be there to welcome him home. Our belief in eternal life and our hope in the Communion of Saints are among our most important beliefs. Without this, our lives can be frigh ul journeys moving toward a complete unknown. But with this belief, our lives on earth are journeys toward the promised land of eternal life and eternal love. God didn t make us for death. God made us for eternal life. Our hope in the resurrec on lies in the power and love of God. Death isn t the enemy, pu ng an end to everything. No, death is a friend who takes us by the hand and leads us into the Kingdom of eternal love. As we remember and honor our beloved dead, we will con nue to display the beau ful pictures of through the celebra on of Christ the King. If you would like to bring in a picture and place on our altar of remembrance, please feel free to do so. Thank you for all you do! With love and prayers, Fr. Ma

Lateran Basilica Whenever the ninth of November falls on a Sunday, many churchgoers are surprised to learn that the regular Mass has been replaced by one for the feast of the Dedica on of St. John Lateran. Christmas, Easter, even All Souls Day we understand. But John Lateran? The feast most nearly resembles Independence Day on the na onal calendar. It celebrates the freedom to worship and the dedica on of a place to gather for it. Early in the fourth century the persecu on of Chris ans came to a close with the conversion of the emperor Constan ne, who granted the followers of Jesus the right to public worship. Constan ne offered Pope Sylvester I some property owned by the Lateran family, which became the site of the first Chris an basilica, dedicated on November 9, 324. In me, the church was placed under the patronage of St. John the Bap st and St. John the Evangelist. The popes lived in a palace adjoining the church, which underwent several renova ons over the centuries. Several councils were held in the building, including the ones legisla ng celibacy for priests and communion once a year for the faithful. Even though the popes moved to Avignon, France, for a century and eventually to a residence in the Va can palace, the Lateran basilica remains the cathedral church of Rome. When we speak of the pope as bishop of Rome, this is his cathedral, not St. Peter s. Since the pope is the shepherd of the universal church, the Lateran basilica of St. John is the cathedral church of the world. Each year the dedica on of this building is celebrated in every Catholic parish in the world on November 9. It proclaims the original freedom of Chris ans to worship, the dedica on of our ancestors to worship, the perseverance of our faith, and the universal nature of our community. By commemora ng the dedica on of the basilica of St. John Lateran, we pass on that faith to new genera ons.
