1 Otey Notes From the Rector: General Convenon The triennial General Convenon of the Episcopal Church convenes July 5 13 in Ausn, Texas. In this bicameral legislature, all acve or re red bishops comprise the House of Bishops, while four laity and four clergy elected from each diocese comprise the House of Depues. Representaon is not proporonal to populaon the more than 84,000 members of the Diocese of Hai are entled to the same number of Depues as the 260 members of the Diocese of Micronesia. General Conven on began in 1785 in Philadelphia with the first meeng of the House of Depues. (Some depues enjoy referring to the House of Bishops as "the junior House," as it was not founded unl 1789.) General Convenon is the governing body of our denominaon. Both houses must vote in favor of a measure for it to be adopted by Conven on. A parliamentary feature of the House of Depues is the "Vote by Orders," which can be requested for parcular votes, and which in effect requires a supermajority of both clergy and laity to adopt a measure. Certain maers, such as changes to the Book of Common Prayer, must be adopted by two successive convenons to take effect. Like our annual Diocesan Convenon, one of the responsibilies of each General Conven on is to consider and adopt a budget. Numerous resoluons are proposed to each General Convenon; some are adopted and some are not. This year, human sexuality will con nue to be prominent, as Convenon will consider re authorizing the services for same sex marriage, and whether they must be made available in dioceses where the bishop objects. The Special Commiee on Sexual Harassment and Exploitaon is bringing dozens of resoluons to respond to issues made visible by the #MeToo Movement, and the House of Bishops will hold a listening session on the effects of sexual harassment, exploitaon, and abuse in the church. There is a proposal to begin the process of revising the current (1979) Prayer Book, and a proposal to deepen our understanding of the current Book instead. The President of the House of Depues has always served without salary, but there is a proposal to make that a full me paid posion like the Presiding Bishop. News from General Convenon will be updated here: hps:// while twice daily shows will be posted at Convenon's media hub: hps:// media hub. I invite you to add to our Sunday prayers with your own daily prayers for this important gathering. 2 VB Us Otey s third annual VB Us, an intergenerational dinner and learning series, was enthusiastically received. The dinners, lectures, and activities were well attended, with many people coming back night after night. All ages were represented, and there was something for everyone. The drama performance by Fire on the Mountain was an exciting addition to the program. Based on a script by Meg Wagner written for Trinity Episcopal Church in Iowa City, Iowa, the production took VB Us participants through the Madeleine L Engle s classic story in a series of sets representing the planets visited by Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin. Thanks and congratulations are owed to Caroline Lamborn, who adapted the script and directed the performances. Caroline is deeply involved in the theatre program at St. Andrews Sewanee School, where she is an upcoming sophomore. VB Us was her debut as a director. Caroline adapted Wagner s script to fit the Otey VB Us model. She opted to sweep the movement to the various planets into the production, so that the audience traced their own journey to Uriel and Camazotz. Caroline and her cast overcame several challenges including the intergenerational element, unpredictable weather, and performing without amplification. The scenes were short, poignant, and faithful to L Engle s prose and message. If you missed these performances, you missed a real treat! Cassie Meyer led us in beautiful music that was fun and easy to learn. It was such a delight to see the children run to the front to be near her, and pass around a shaker to help keep time. Sherry Kling and Jamie Pappas assisted on different nights. Participants enjoyed delicious meals planned by Shelley and Wardie Cammack, and prepared Wardie &Shelley Cammack Cassie Meyer & Jamie Pappas by the VB Us kitchen crew including Claudia Porter, Tim Nelson, Lisa Howick, Phebe Hethcock, Brown Patterson, and David Burnett. A big thanks also to our parish administrator Frieda Hawkins for help with printing, promotion, supplies, and myriad other tasks. We had terrific speakers who engaged us in discussion on the Wrinkle in Time theme. Amy Lamborn spoke about the longing for enchantment in a flattened out world. Rob MacSwain reflected on his experiences with L Engle s theology in a piece called What have I got that IT hasn t got? Mary Grace Gibbs DuPree, a historian of medieval Christianity, drove up from Emory University in Atlanta. DuPree drew parallels between the expression of feminine authority and community in A Wrinkle in Time, and that expressed in St. Alban s Psalter and Mary Grace Gibbs DuPree other medieval Christian art. About half our VB Us folks attended the lectures, while others participated in art projects and physical activities such as constructing a labyrinth collaboratively with masking tape and playing in a drum circle. A huge shout out to our whole VB Us crew for bringing together all the individual pieces of this program, especially Lisa Rung who helped shape the arts and activities programs. Thanks to youth director Neil Patterson and our nursery team including Paige Patterson, Krystal Fowler, and Ford Paey, for leading activities. On the final night, we worshiped in the church and Rob Lamborn offered a sermon drawn from A Wrinkle in Time, encourage us to listen, go, and love like Meg Murry. One child told her mother, she had been waiting all week for a chance to see the inside of the church. Throughout the week, we were blessed to greet new friends, welcome faithful members, and grow in God s grace together. Thank you all for your enthusiasm and support of this program. 4 Community Acon Commiee Volunteers Unloading Groceries FATHER MAKE US HUNGRY UNTIL ALL YOUR PEOPLE ARE FED" That is the prayer given by our rector as we began the rd Annual Hunger Walk This event raises funds and awareness of food insecurity in our area The Hunger Walk is sponsored by the Monteagle/Sewanee Rotary and for the past three years has raised more than $47,000 to benefit the food pantries of CAC and Morton Methodist in Monteagle. There is a serious poverty problem on this mountain and people do have food insecurity. One in four children in Middle Tennessee go hungry and that is a sad but true stasc. CAC distributes approximately 2000 pounds of food each month to those who come for weekly groceries. We can do this only because we are on the receiving end of many generous organizaons and individuals. Plans are underway for th Annual Hunger Walk. Please come and be a part of something that will help so many. Watch for details as plans are already underway. HUNGER WALK 2018 SEPTEMBER Page 4

5 Gospel and Gumbo FOTM at Lake Winnie A big shout out to everyone who made our first annual event a big success. It is impossible to name all of the volunteers who worked so hard to make this possible. Piggly Wiggly donated all of the gumbo ingredients and many cooks stirred the pots. The gospel singers were amazing and promised to return for next year. CAC raised some money and everyone had a good time...laissez le bon temps rouler and Praise the Lord! Just wait til next year! On June 7 seven youth and two adult chaperones spent the day art Lake Winnie. We left Sewanee at 7:30 AM. We spent the morning on rides, then, after lunch we spent most of the afternoon in the water park, after which we ended the day with more rides and games of skill/luck. We ate at Taco Bell on the way home and arrived back in Sewanee around 7 PM. Sunscreen spared us sunburn, but next ime we will all remember to bring our water slippers to keep from burning our feet on the hot pavement. The day was beautiful, warming to a high of 90 at 5 PM, with low humidity which made for a great day in and out of the water park. W H E E! Page 5

6 Fire on the Mountain Rides Again Last year, Fire on the Mountain was awarded 3 rd place for our float. Our float included several characters from different universes, hence the name The Mulversity of the South. The main idea was that jusce comes from all kinds of people, which explains why we called ourselves the Just Us League. Want to help decorate this year s float? Want to ride in the parade? Send a text or to Jeannie Babb at or oteyformaon@gmail.com to be included. Elizabeth Taylor Otey Summer Book This summer members and friends of Otey Parish are invited to read a book together. The Immortal Life of Henriea Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, tells the story of the poor black tobacco farmer whose cells were taken without her knowledge in Cells originang from hers have been used in developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and in vitro ferlizaon, all without compensaon to her or her family. Made into a movie on HBO last year, the awardwinning book treats race, ethics and medicine in the context of the history of medical experiments on African Americans and the effect of such treatment on subsequent generaons. The Immortal Life of Henriea Lacks is available in paperback, for e readers, and as an audiobook and is suitable for teens as well as adults. We will discuss our responses at the first Adult Forum session on August 26, 10:00am. Rob Lamborn A Happy Customer With the Help of CAC 2017 s 3rd place float. Shawn recently lost everything in a devastang house fire. He was able to secure a loan through Beer Fi which is the brainchild of Spike Horsch. Spike as a VISTA working with the Babson Center developed Beer Fi, which provides loans at a reasonable interest rate, to help avoid predatory lending. Shawn was able to work with Spike to secure a loan to purchase a much needed car. CAC was able to connect the dots and make it happen. Page 6

7 Go Forth for God Part of the Pentecost Liturgy includes Jesus' great commission to go forth to all nations to spread the Gospel. Hymn 347 text was authored by John Raphael Peacey ( ). This month we are going to concentrate on the composer of the tune, LITTON., Dr. Eric Routley. ( ) Dr. Routley has seven hymns in the 1982 Hymnal and was considered an authority in church music in America. His lasting influence as a theologian of music and mentor to many church musicians can not be underestimated. I had the privilege of working with Dr. Routley when a student and know of his wit and wisdom first hand. Erik Reginald Routley was born in Brighton, England on October, 31, He was born exactly four hundred years to the day that Martin Luther nailed his theses to Wittenburg Church. He was very proud of that. His several degrees are all from Oxford University. He was a scholar, Congregational minister, composer, and musicologist. He was chaplain of Mansfield College (one of the Oxford group) from He is widely published and is known for the tunes SHARPTHORNE and ABINGDON as well as LITTON. He was also a prolific writer of church anthems. In 1975, Dr. Routley moved to Princeton, New Jersey as Professor of Church Music at Westminster Choir College. With him he brought the new style of hymns referred to as the British hymn explosion. This new style was to influence hymnals and hymn singing for the last half of the 20 th century. One of the biggest changes Dr. Routley brought was the halting of singing Amen at the end of each hymn sung in American churches. This was a giant change to custom. His books (some 18) still are used in the education of the church musician. His insight into the act of singing praise has not been matched. His wife, Margaret, now lives in Oxford. Dr. Routley continues to be a beacon to the best church hymnody can be. Enjoy Go Forth For God, Go Into the World in Peace as we sing it this month. Then take its text and wonderful tune out as you too go out to serve. God bless each of you. I trust this summer is providing a time of refreshment and joy for all. Enjoy the beauty of nature only summer can bring. See you in church. Kathleen Sturgis Otey Memorial Parish The Rt. Rev. John Bauerschmidt Bishop of the Diocese of Tennessee The Rev. Robert C.
