Priest s Report 2018 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me by Your generous Spirit. (Psalm 50:10-12) The State of the Parish As we finish another year of God s Grace here at All Saints, we must look back and thank God for His many blessings. We have survived two hurricanes and multiple floods. We have commissioned iconographer John Filipakis to install six original stain glass windows in our nave. We are projecting that these windows will be completed in The Archdiocese has officially attached two retired Antiochian Orthodox priests to our parish. Our Deacon David has been elevated to Protodeacon. Our parishioners are generous and hard working. Our daughter mission, St. Raphael, is growing and active. Our people continue to be warm and welcoming to strangers and seekers and visitors. We have added two new parish groups with the blessing of Bishop Nicholas: A Young Adult Group and St. Nicholas Men s Group. These two new groups along with our Teen SOYO Group and St. Thekla Women s Group will increase opportunities for worship and fellowship and service within our parish. Looking ahead to 2019 we must rededicate ourselves and our families to: Spending more private time in prayer with our Lord Jesus Christ talking and listening. Becoming more active and regular in weekday worship services as well as weekend services as we pray together in the Body of Christ. Obeying our Lord s command to love our neighbors and our enemies. Humbling ourselves before God and man putting off arrogance and selfishness confessing our sins and beseeching God for forgiveness and restoration. Concentrating on the good and pure and lovely rather than the bad and the ugly and the problems. Seeing the positive in all things, thinking positively, and rejecting negative thoughts. 6

Thanking and glorifying God for ALL things not just for some things. As I have said many times, All Saints is as close to heaven on earth as we will ever experience. God has blessed us with a truly unique parish a parish that loves God and each other a parish that is blessed with joy and peace. What we have is precious and fragile and we must actively work and pray to maintain it to till and to keep the beautiful garden that God has given us. Glory be to God for all things! 9 2018 Parish Council Chairman s Report The Year in Review This is my first year as Parish Council Chairman, and I am delighted to report robust growth in our Church community nearly making up the pre-mission numbers. All Saints continues to attract new members every Sunday, including those moving to the Raleigh area who are already Orthodox, new babies of existing members, as well as catechumens who are new to Orthodoxy. Thanks to all of you for your welcoming spirit, and open arms and hearts to those wishing to embrace Orthodoxy in our region. It is Christ working in you, our members, along with our committed clergy, who continue to make All Saints a beautiful place to worship always welcoming those seeking the truth with warmth of spirit and loving hearts. Exciting news for this year is our obvious joy of having our Bishop Nicholas visit and worship with us along with our daughter Parish, St. Raphael Orthodox Mission for a wonderful hierarchical celebration. As Saint Ignatius said in his letter to the Church in Smyrna, Wherever the bishop appears, there let the people be; as wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church. We successfully repaired and maintained our Church building and its grounds as the property goes through its normal maintenance cycles. It is proving to be a reliable and dependable place of worship and fellowship for the faithful to gather as Church. We hosted a number of fund raising events including the annual Baklawa baking and the Artisan fair both of which were great successes. We officially stood up the new Antiochian Men s (Amen) Group named for St. Nicholas. Additionally, All Saints financial footing is strong and we have succeeded in managing our resources wisely. This has allowed us to simultaneously meet our financial obligations, upgrade our facilities with new stain glass murals, reduce mortgage principal, shore-up our contingency reserves, and do charitable activities. Your continued financial offering to God has been crucial to the success of the All Saints ministry and without it, none of this would be possible. Thank you! Your Fellow Servant in Christ, Sdn. John Pelikan, Parish Council Chairman 8

2018 Choir Report The Musical Year O give thanks unto the Lord and call upon His name; declare among the nations His works. Sing unto Him and chant unto Him; tell forth all His wonders. Psalm 104 LXX 2018 was an excellent year for the choir. We have maintained our numbers of participating members, and we have made good progress on developing additional choir directors, so there can be sufficient coverage in that capacity throughout the year without overburdening any single individual. Thank you to Paul Rogers and Aaron Hallberg for your time and dedication to this great ministry! We have proposed as a group to make some improvements to our choir books this year in order to make them more flexible. First, we will have both a folder and transparency at each variable position in the choir books preventing having to transfer back and forth from the single sleeve in the front of the folder. I think this will ensure better organization and prevent things from getting out of order. Second, I am still intending to revise the typeset music in the standard liturgy music to make it more presentable and electronically filed. The Choir continues to sound great, but we can always improve, so this year I am proposing some new technical goals, see below. I attended the SMI this year as ASOC s representative, and I was encouraged by the direction that the Archdiocese is taking. Expect to see higher quality sheet music as well as added improvements to the conformity of the Byzantine chant music to its traditional roots thanks to the work of Deacon John El Messih, both of which will enhance the presentation of the music ultimately to minister to both the faithful and the seeker alike. I would also like to thank Sdn. Christopher, Lauren Evancho, Karis Pelikan, and Asa James for their continual and faithful dedication to chanting all the other services besides the Divine Liturgy. It has made the worship a beautiful ministry to all. A Wonderful Observation: I would finally like to thank all the members of All Saints for their continual participation in congregational singing. Everything sounds wonderful, and Pascha was magnificent! Congregational singing is not a common phenomenon in the Orthodox Church, so to see a vibrant expression here at All Saints is a delight, and it serves as an artistic expression of beauty for the Glory of God for all truth seekers to experience when they attend All Saints either for the first time or for the 1000 th. My goals for 2019 are a continuation of last year s goals with some additions: 1. Identify and encourage talented singers from the congregation to join the choir and help lead our beautiful singing. 2. Identify and encourage talented singers interested in chanting using byzantine notation during the many other services other than the Divine Liturgy to join the Kliros. 9

3. Conduct chanting workshops for those interested in learning Byzantine Chant. 4. Increased attention and practice in chanting the specific and important festal hymns throughout the year. 5. Continue to mentor and train more assistant Choir Directors to be able to provide coverage at critical times throughout the year. Allow them to exercise their talents in teaching some basic level music theory to the choir. 6. Begin the project of typesetting the Divine Liturgy music for All Saints. 7. Introduce more musical warmups and exercise to help the entire choir to improve their pitch and tonal quality. Note: If there is anyone who has a desire to join the choir or learn to chant and has a gift for good pitch and rhythm, please don t hesitate to talk to me and/or Father Nicholas about joining. By the way, chanting is not just a male only endeavor. If you have been coming to midweek vespers, then you may have noticed. Glory to God for all things! Your Fellow Servant in Christ, Sdn. John Pelikan, Choir Director 10

2018 St. Thekla (Antiochian Women) Report Our Work EVERY WOMEN WHO ATTENDS ALL SAINTS CHURCH IS A MEMBER OF THE ST THEKLA GROUP. St. Thekla work during the year at All Saints: The Executive Board meets approximately every other month to review finances and plan events. The St. Thekla Group hosts 3-4 socials / teas each year highlighting a variety of interests and topics, such as decorating Pysanky Eggs, writing Christmas cards for parishioners, a tutorial on making Holy Bread and a Glass Icon painting workshop. About 5-6 times per year St. Thekla has a Ladies Night Out at a Cary or Raleigh area restaurant. During Antiochian Women s Month St. Thekla helps coordinate women to read the Epistle, usher and take the offering on each Sunday of the month. Approximately once per month during the school year, Khouria Barbara leads a Saturday morning ladies book study. The St. Thekla ladies also host baby and wedding showers, and provide meals to new mothers and others who have a need, such as recovering from surgery or serious illness. St. Thekla ladies coordinate potluck dinners for the twelve major feasts. Additionally, during Bishop Nicholas visit this year, the ladies coordinated a reception and a dinner after services. St. Thekla work in the community: We collect socks for the homeless in October. We pray for our Friends in Need shut in list, as well as send cards. We help Teen SOYO collect items for school backpacks for local kids each year, and for particular cases as need arises such as Hurricane Florence relief this year. We collect new underwear during Lent for those in need in the community. We provide Christmas gifts to local families and donate to the Guardian Ad Litem program. St. Thekla fundraisers include: Making and selling Advent and Lenten soup and bread. Hosting the Fall Artisan Faire where we sell food, baked goods and handcrafts for a profit, and invite the community to join us. Making and selling Baklawa to the community in November. 11

How We Use the Funds Buy kitchen, Coffee Hour and Pascha Picnic supplies. Provide Christmas gifts for local families in need and donate to the Guardian Ad Litem program. Give money, along with the Parish, to the Metropolitan s Appeal, as well as support the yearly Mercy Mission of the AW-NAB. Send soup and bread sale proceeds to the Bittle family for their special needs daughter. Give money, along with the Parish, to a Russian orphanage. Help with registration and travel expenses for St. Thekla representatives to attend the PLC and NAB meetings. Send our chapter dues to the Diocese of Miami and the Southeast Antiochian Women. Special thanks to Dawn for her years of services as Chair of St. Thekla. Thank you to the other Board members, Ileana, Patsey, and Stephanie, and to all the women of All Saints. You are, all of you, always ready, without ever counting the cost, to give of your love and caring for everyone. Glory to God for you. Respectfully Submitted, Carolyn Early, Chairman, St Thekla 12

2018 St. Nicholas Men s Group Report The St. Nicholas Men s Group has now been established in accord with our Bishop Nicholas wishes. The group is named in honor of Bishop Nicholas as well as Saint Nicholas. The process of selecting a name, developing a constitution, appointing the first officers and formulating a calendar of both social and service events is either completed or well under way. The below mentioned officers look forward to great support from the men of All Saint s as we begin our first year of service. In Christ, Paul Wendler, Chair Bob Hulse, Vice Chair Pete Christopoulos, Secretary 13

2018 Teen SOYO (Society of Orthodox Youth Organization) Report We are very blessed at All Saints to have a large number of teens who are active in the parish and interested in expanding their participation in worship, fellowship and service in the church. Our youth participate in our services, informally gather together, and interact in myriad ways throughout the year. The Teen SOYO program is available for teens ages 13-19, and currently at All Saints, we have teens in this age range. Due to low number of older teens in other parishes, we have some older teens from the OCA, and St Raphael s, that join us as well. On average, we have about 15 teens attend the meetings and events. The goal of our SOYO program is to bring our youth closer to Christ and His Church. Some of activities in the past year include: Annual Canned Food Drive, held during Advent. The food is brought to the NC Food Bank and distributed to those in need throughout the state. For the winter collection, we totaled 1593 lbs. Several teens and youth leaders attended the Winter Delegates Meeting in January. March 3 rd the teens volunteered at the Brown Bag Event held at St Andrews Catholic Church. We then went to Starbucks, and followed by lunch hosted by the Keim family and finally finished the day at the Cary Kite Festival at Bond Park. Our teens read the Psalms on Holy Friday during the evening Vigil. Food for the Hungry: these monies are collected during Lent and sent to the National Archdiocesan Council. The collection for 2018 totaled $ May 5 th the teens met up at the Triangle Rock Climbing facility in Cary for some indoor rock climbing. They followed this with lunch at Panera. We had a Bake Sale in May earning approximately $ for the diocese mission fund which we sent directly to St Raphael. In June several teens went to the Parish Life Conference. We had a Bible Bowl Team and an Oratorical contestant. Asa Keim represented us in the Oratorical, and the Bible Bowl Team consisted of: Lauren Evancho, Karis Pelikan, Asa Keim, and Joey Barron. In July, we had a meeting to plan our fall activities and voted on our officers. August we had a pool party at a neighborhood pool. We helped the Guardian ad Litem Back to School Project by purchasing school supplies and filling back packs. We assembled and donated approximately 85 backpacks. We held our second annual Ice-cream Sundae Sunday on Oct 7 th. We had to reschedule the original September date due to Hurricane Florence. We made $ In September, several teens helped at the Artesian Fair. During October, teen month, the teens ushered, were Greeters, did the collections and read the Epistle during the Divine Liturgies. 14

Special Olympics Collection: these funds are used to support a SOYO sponsored training week for Special Olympic athletes at Antiochian Village. October 2018 we collected and sent in $ On November 3 rd we met to make blankets for the Ronald McDonald House. The supplies were purchased from donations to SOYO for humanitarian needs. We made 7 blankets, and have supplies to make several more before we visit the Ronald McDonald House scheduled on December 15 th. Childcare during All Saints Annual meetings. We will sell Liturgical calendars during Advent. Last year we made approximately $ on the calendars. In December 2017 the teens sponsored a parent night out event and watched the kids for several hours. We are planning this year s event for Dec 7 th, We are working on a visit to a Monastery in the coming year, as well as a ski trip. Our planned ski trip last February was rained out with warm weather. Other humanitarian efforts that we are trying to incorporate in addition to the annual ones are meals on wheels, and lunches to Raleigh Rescue Mission, and perhaps working with the Brown Bag Ministry. We are also looking into working an event with Triangle Down Syndrome Network. The teens would like to especially thank Father Nicholas, the Parish Council and the All Saints Parish. Your support of the teens and their humanitarian efforts are amazing! We are truly blessed with your support and love. There s an amazing bond of love in this parish and it shows in everything the parish does! A simple thank you seems far too small to truly convey our love and thanks from all the teens. Thank you! Our officers for the year are as follows: Lauren Evancho, Chair; Karis Pelikan, Secretary; Aidan Labrozzi, Co-Chair; Mera Wagoner, Treasurer; Quinn Labrozzi, Humanitarian Coordinator; Unfilled, currently Quinn is filling in Activities Coordinator Respectfully Submitted, Danielle Labrozzi, Teen Advisor 15

2018 Education Report All Saints continues to be blessed with a thriving church school program. Our youth programming is comprised of 6 multi-age classes serving children from age 3 through the end of high school. Each class is team taught by two members of the All Saints congregation. Our classrooms continue to be full, with our weekly average around 70 students. In addition to our classes for the children we have our adult church school class each week in the nave taught by Father Nicholas Sorensen. Our curriculum has been thoughtfully developed over time with an emphasis on age appropriateness, and is consistent with the beliefs of the Orthodox Church. For our younger classes especially we focus on hands on projects to help them connect with the lessons in a fun and engaging way. This year has been especially exciting as we have welcomed several new teachers into our program. I am very grateful for the willingness of our new and veteran teachers who graciously share their faith, talents and energy with our parish s children each week. This year s curriculum is as follows: Preschool Teachers- Zorica Craciun and Sueanna Keim The ABC s of the Orthodox Church K & 1st Grade Teachers- Stephanie McCoy and Lucy Overby The Old Testament and Feasts of the Church Year 2nd and 3rd Grade Teachers- Mary Kliewer and Anna Muresan The Life of the Orthodox Church and the Feasts of the Church Year 4th and 5th Grade Teachers- Chris Hallberg and Sara Moss The Divine Liturgy Middle School Teachers- Ileana Ibanescu and Shell Keim The Feasts of the Church 16

High School Teachers- Protodeacon David Keim and Subdeacon Christopher McCoy Catechism, The Way, The Truth and The Life There are also several events throughout the year involving the children of our parish that the church school teachers coordinate. These include: Decorating the Parish Hall Christmas Tree St. Nicholas Day Feast and filling of the shoes The production of the annual Christmas Play that is presented by the church school children after the Liturgy for the Nativity of Christ St. Lazarus Saturday lunch and activities- including the making of the palm crosses for Palm Sunday Parish Life Conference Creative Arts Festival entries In addition, this fall the church school children were blessed with a visit by Bishop Nicholas and enjoyed an afternoon of games and fellowship with His Grace. Thank You On behalf of the entire church school I would like to thank Father Nicholas, the parish council and all of the people of All Saints for their continued support of our church school program. This year in particular we would like to gratefully acknowledge the construction of a new closet for the church school located in our preschool classroom. It has been very helpful to our teachers to have our materials organized and easily accessible. It is a tremendous blessing to be part of a church that takes the spiritual education of its youth so seriously and supports its work so generously. I continue to be honored and excited to have been trusted with this incredibly important ministry. Respectfully Submitted, Christine Hallberg, Director of Education 17

Greeters Report Thank you to our 2018 Greeters team! Your generosity of time and spirit is truly appreciated. Below is a chart of the monthly attendance for the period of Dec 2017 thru Oct Average weekly worship attendance for the period under consideration was 233. Would you like to become an All Saints greeter? We are always looking for more volunteers and hope you will consider the opportunity to welcoming all our fellow parishioners and visitors as they arrive for services. Welcoming Visitors - Please remember that we are ALL greeters for All Saints! Part of what makes All Saints such a wonderful place is how we warmly welcome our visitors. Thank you to all of you who already take the time to introduce yourselves to our visitors! If you notice visitors please let them know that we meet for coffee hour after the divine liturgy and offer to show them the way to the church hall. Movement in and out of the Nave during services. Except in the case of an emergency or when attending to a young child, please do not 18

enter or leave the service during the readings of the Epistle and Gospel, the sermon or anytime the Body and Blood of Christ are in the Nave (e.g., during the distribution of Holy Communion). Respectfully submitted, Scirak Maascio, Greeters Committee Chairman 19

Communications 2018 Our main source of communication at All Saints Antiochian Orthodox Church remains our website. I would like to thank Fr. Nicholas for his help and wisdom, and to thank Protodeacon David for diligently synchronizing much of the information provided via google group (formerly known as yahoo group) with the All Saints website. Due to privacy issues, many pictures have remained unposted to our website this year. We are currently working to create a form that would enable members or visitors wishing to deny permission for any display or publication of their image, to do so. We would store pictures for which we do have permission, using the Dropbox application. Aligned with more privacy protection concerns, the communication team, under the guidance of Fr. Nicholas, and with much help from Anthen Kibret, is working on creating an online membership form, which will enable current and future members of our church to enter their information securely. The form will be printable; therefore, no data will be stored on the computer. We are hopeful that this new membership form could open the door to creating an updated version of the All Saints parish directory. Finally yet importantly, I would like to thank all of you in our congregation for using your heart as a portal of communication to one another. Working as a humanitarian coordinator, as part of our St. Thekla group, I have seen this at work so many times, and every day I am amazed and humbled by your example. Glory be to God for all things! Respectfully submitted, Zorica Craciun, Communications Chairman 20

Financial Audit Report Process Findings I reviewed the procedures and the documentation for the income, balance sheet, and budget versus year to date comparisons. I also reviewed the documentation for revenues and expenses as well as check book register versus receipts versus bank statement reconciliations in accordance with GAAP for the 2018 fiscal year. I discussed my findings with Treasurer Mihai Ibanescu. I find the procedures adopted and implemented by All Saints Orthodox Church, and especially its leadership, council, and others to be consistent with GAAP and the stewardship of financial resources entrusted to it. Respectfully Submitted, Kyra E. Zoranski 22

2018 Treasurers Report Year 2017/2018 Highlights Year 2017 Highlights As usual, because the previous Annual Meeting is happening before the end of the year, the actual numbers for that year are not yet known. So here is the situation for Budgeted offering for 2017 was $314,772, with the actual offering being $342,960. Expenses were kept slightly below budget. Year 2018 At the end of October 2018, offering has mostly kept up with the budget, while expenses were above budget. Maintenance was accountable for most of that, with remodeling of classrooms and general upkeep being the major causes. The outstanding balance for mortgage was at $472, Proposed Budget Highlights The 2019 budget is following the 2018 budget. Some of the significant changes are: The Diocese of Miami and the South-East has restructured our dues to a simpler formula, that is a percentage of our donation to the Archdiocese. These dues replace our current Diocese and Missons dues. Our Archdiocese pledge is a tithe of the previous year (2017) income, and has increased. The Parish Council had approved the proposal for a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment for all of the church s personnel (Senior Priest, Proto-Deacon, and Administrative Assistant). A small increase was approved for our janitorial service as well. Following Bishop Nicholas recommendation of more parish participation to retreats, the Conventions line item for laity has been increased. We ve marginally increased our support to the two monasteries for which we send 23

donations. Lastly, the Parish Council approved the proposal to grant a housing allowance to our attached clergy. Access to the Budget Because the budget contains sensitive information, we are not including it in the electronic format that is downloadable from the Parish web site. We will have printed copies prior to the Annual Meeting. Should you want to analyze the budget ahead of time, please allsaintsncoffice@gmail.com to request a paper copy. If you have questions or comments about the proposed budget, please do not hesitate to contact Fr. Nicholas or me prior to the annual meeting. Respectfully submitted, Mihai Ibanescu, Treasurer for the All Saints Parish Council 24
