1 The Traditional Latin Mass Society of San Francisco TLM Society Website: TLM Society If you would like to post an article or an advertisement in the TLMS bulletin and website please us at The Traditional Latin Mass Society is an association of Roman Catholic faithful dedicated to the preservation of the Ancient form of the Roman Rite or the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, as a legitimate use of Holy Mother Church s Great Liturgical Patrimony. The Society includes lay faithful drawn from every age, group and walks of life as well as clergy and religious members who continue to adhere with great love and affection to the earlier liturgical forms. (Pope Benedict XVI, Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum of 2007) Trinity Sunday June 15, 2014 June 19 27, 2014 A Parish Mission Conference Source and Summit of Catholic Life With Fr. Paul Nicholson Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church 4420 Geary Boulevard San Francisco, CA The Source and Summit of the New Evangelization is the Eucharistic Mystery Every faithful Catholic is set aflame and fortified in the Heart of Christ in every Mass and is sent out as fresh arterial blood to a dying world. Far from retreating, the Church looks toward the challenges of modern paganism with the same charity and hope as she did at her beginning. The Divine Majesty hidden in the Host comes to liberate us by stooping down beneath us, to lift us up so as to change the world. Celebrating both the Missals of Bl. John XXIII and Paul VI in a unique liturgical mission, Eucharistic Pride 2014 aims to give the Heart of Christ adoration and reparation through liturgical excellence, preached conferences, Eucharistic processions, and silent adoration. 2 Trinity Sunday June 15, Parish Mission Begins June 19th at Star of the Sea Parish This week Star of the Sea Parish in San Francisco takes a giant step forward. It has been too long since we had a proper Parish Mission, and now that time has arrived. Traditionally, we speak of Parish Missions in our country. In the early part of the nineteenth century, before there were many catholic schools or even churches, when most men and women were worn out by their daily work and duties; and even children were put to work in the fields and factories, missionaries would travel from city to city or if possible from parish to parish (often by horse) to offer a time of spiritual renewal and refreshment to burdened souls. Because of a lack of formal catholic education many knew little of their faith, and thus were easily tempted to give in to the spirit of the world or even lose their Catholic faith in a hostile environment. These mission talks and ceremonies were not superficial as we can tell from the manuals these holy priests have left behind for us. (I have a three volume set in my library.) These missionaries laid the foundations for the growth of the Catholic Church in the United States from coast to coast. As parishes and schools became established throughout our great country the Parish Missions continued as times of spiritual refreshment and renewal in a parish setting. They served as an objective examination of conscience as local pastors were sometimes afraid to take on the controversial issues for fear of being unpopular. As a consequence many would go to confession and come back to the sacraments during the Parish Mission when the Truth of the Gospel was heard. It was also a time to renew the Catholic life of families. As Catholics became more advanced in faith these Parish Missions were looked forward to as a time of spiritual reawakening and even fellowship. Catholics developed a strong identity as a result that would last for many generations. Clearly, the current crisis of rampant secularism, watered-down Catholicism, the collapse of Christian values, apostasy in great numbers, and the infamous dictatorship of relativism, calls for a revival of the Catholic Faith through Parish Missions. From Thursday, June 19 th through Thursday, June 27 th Father Paul Nicholson, a preacher and teacher of the New Evangelization, will be in our midst to bring to us the authentic word of God and help us treasure the Lord s gift of Himself to us in His institution of the Holy Eucharist. Statistics reveal that many Catholics are not clear about the full Catholic doctrine on the Eucharist. Otherwise, they and their children and grand-children would be at Holy Mass at least each Sunday. Did not the Lord give us the solemn command at the Last Supper: Do this in remembrance of me! And then He went up to Calvary to give up His life on the Cross for the salvation of souls. Come and see! the Lord Jesus calls out to each soul. Come and see! In a very real way Jesus will be walking among us with an urgent agenda: Repent and believe in the Gospel! Now is the time for all of us to stand up for Jesus as we shout out for all to hear: We stand for God! and Firmly I believe and truly. Let us sincerely and lovingly fall down in adoration before our Eucharistic King. From time to time we all need some extra help in living holy lives. That is the purpose of our Parish Mission. In a special way from June 19 through June 27 th we will be walking on holy ground, like Moses before the burning bush, as the Holy Spirit does His special work of spiritual recreation and renewal in our community. LET NO ONE STAND IN THE WAY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT!! This will be a time of prayer, preaching, purification, teaching, conversion, reconversion, fellowship, and joyful celebration of our faith. There will be two processions in the streets with the Most Blessed Sacrament in the Monstrance on Thursday, June 19 th after the 6:30 P.M. Mass and on Sunday, June 22 nd after the special Mass at 5:00 P.M. Please take home a brochure with all the details. After a Parish Mission it was often the custom to erect a large crucifix in the sanctuary as a reminder to stay faithful to the Way of the Cross. Star of the Sea has such a cross in the sanctuary near the Altar of St. Joseph. May this Mission Cross once again serve as a constant reminder to take up our cross and daily follow the Lord. Please, please pray and do penance for the spiritual success of our Parish Mission. St. John Bosco once said: Da mihi animas; cetera tolle!; Give me souls, take the rest away! If only one soul is saved because of Our Parish Mission then it was worthwhile. Consider, this letter your personal invitation to come each day and to invite family, friends, and neighbors. I am, sincerely yours, in Jesus Christ, Father Mark G. Mazza 2 P age

4 The Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter mourns the death of Rev. Kenneth Walker, FSSP, who was murdered on June 11, 2014 at the Rectory of Mater Misericordiae Parish in Phoenix, Arizona, where he served as assistant priest. He was dearly loved by the faithful he served and his confreres in the Fraternity. Fr. Joseph Terra was also injured in the assault; he is hospitalized and in critical but stable condition. We ask for your prayers for the health of Fr. Terra. We ask for your prayers for the repose of the soul of Fr. Walker and that God might grant great consolation to his family and his parishioners in this terrible tragedy. Fr. Walker was ordained a priest in 2012, and was 28 years old. Oremus: O God, Who didst give to thy servant, Kenneth, by his sacerdotal office, a share in the priesthood of the Apostles, grant, we implore, that he may also be one of their company forever in Heaven. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Requiem Aeternam dona ei, Domine. Et lux perpetua luceat ei. Requiescat in pace. NB the TLMS was there in May visiting Fr. Joseph Terra. Fr. Ken Walker was on vacation at that time. Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus O most holy Heart of Jesus, fountain of every blessing, I adore You, I love You, and with a lively sorrow for my sins, I offer You this poor heart of mine. Make me humble, patient, pure and wholly obedient to Your will. Grant, good Jesus, that I may live in You and for You. Protect me in the midst of danger; comfort me in my afflictions; give me health of body, assistance in my temporal needs, Your blessing on all that I do, and the grace of a holy death. An Indulgence of 500 Days (Apostolic Brief, Dec. 4, 1915; S.P. Ap., Nov 8, 1934) May the Heart of Jesus be loved everywhere. Indulgence of 100 Days, once a day (Leo XIII, Sept 7, 1897) Jesus, meek and humble of Heart, make my heart like unto Thine. Indulgence of 300 Days (Pius X, Sept 15, 1905) May the Heart of Jesus in the most Blessed Sacrament be praised, adored, and loved with grateful affection, at every moment, in all the tabernacles of the world, even to the end of time. Indulgence of 100 Days, once a day (Pius IX, Feb 29, 1868) Sweet Heart of my Jesus, make me love Thee ever more and more! Indulgence of 300 Days, each time (Pius IX, Nov 26, 1876) Sweet Heart of Jesus, be my love. Indulgence of 300 Days, once a day (Leo XIII, May 21, 1892) Heart of Jesus, burning with love of us, inflame our hearts with love of Thee. Indulgence of 100 Days, once a day (Leo XIII, July 16, 1893) 4 P age

5 Feature of the Week: Liturgy, Family, the Great Crisis of the Church Interview excerpt with Bishop Athanasius Schneider Auxiliary of Astana in Kazakhstan Full text of the interview can be accessed at and events/interview with bishop athanasius schneider To my knowledge and experience, the deepest wound in the actual crisis of the Church is the Eucharistic wound; the abuses of the Blessed Sacrament. Many people are receiving Holy Communion in an objective state of mortal sin...this is spreading in the Church, especially in the western world. There people very rarely go to Holy Communion with a sufficient preparation. Some people who go to Holy Communion live in irregular moral situations, which do not correspond to the Gospel. Without being married, they go to Holy Communion. They might be divorced and living in a new marriage, a civil marriage, and they go nevertheless to Holy Communion. I think this is a very, very grievous situation. There is also the question of the objectively irreverent reception of Holy Communion. The so called new, modern manner of receiving Holy Communion directly into the hand is very serious because it exposes Christ to an enormous banality. There is the grievous fact of the loss of the Eucharistic fragments. No one can deny this. And the fragments of the consecrated host are crushed by feet. This is horrible! Our God, in our churches, is trampled by feet! No one can deny it. And this is happening on a large scale. This has to be, for a person with faith and love for God, a very serious phenomenon. We cannot continue as if Jesus as God does not exist, as though only the bread exists. This modern practice of Communion in the hand has nothing to do with the practice in the ancient Church. The modern practice of receiving Communion in hand contributes gradually to the loss of the Catholic faith in the real presence and in the transubstantiation. A priest and a bishop cannot say this practice is ok. Here is at stake the most holy, the most divine and concrete on Earth.' Introit Tob 12:6 Blessed be the Holy Trinity and undivided Unity: we will give glory to Him, because He has shown His mercy to us. Ps 8:2 O Lord, our Lord, how glorious is Your Name over all the earth! V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Mass Propers for Trinity Sunday: June 15, 2014 Collect Almighty, eternal God, You Who have given Your servants, in the confession of the true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of that majesty to adore its unity, grant, we beseech You, that in the firmness of this faith we may ever be protected from all harm. Epistle Rom. 11: Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and of the knowledge of God! How incomprehensible and His judgments and how unsearchable His ways! For Who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been His counselor? Or who has first given to Him, that recompense should be made him? For from Him and through Him and unto Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever, amen. Gradual Dan 3:55 56 Blessed are You, O Lord, Who look into the depths from Your throne upon the Cherubim. V. Blessed are You, O Lord, in the firmament of heaven, and praiseworthy forever. Alleluia, alleluia. Dan 3:52 Blessed are You, O Lord, the God of our fathers, and praiseworthy forever. Alleluia. Gospel Matt 28:18 20 At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: All power in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you all days, even unto the consummation of the world. Offertory Tob. 12:6. Blessed be God the Father, and the only begotten Son of God, and also the Holy Spirit: because He has shown His mercy to us. Secret We call upon Your Name, O Lord, and beseech You to hallow this sacrificial offering and through it to make us an eternal offering to You. Communion Tob 12:6 We bless the God of heaven, and before all living we will praise Him; because He has shown His mercy to us. Post Communion May the reception of this sacrament, O Lord our God, and the profession of our faith in the eternal holy Trinity and undivided Unity, benefit us for the salvation of body and soul. 5 P age
