Mark Mazza From the Prefect of the Traditional Latin Mass Society of San Francisco Dearest Friends, Mary, who is virtually the only venerated feminine image of the divine to be found in the monotheistic religions, ought to be of particular interest in our era as we struggle to modify or enrich patriarchal traditions. Within the tradition of Holy Mother Church itself, it is striking to realize how early, how complete, and how warmly loving is the picture of Mary and her role in salvation history. Mary has been always been seen by the Saints as Regina Caeli - Queen of Heaven and Corde Ecclesiae Heart of the Church. The Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen once pointed to the fact: that if one could make his own mother, wouldn t he make her perfect, wouldn t he love her so much that he would protect her from any harm, from any fall, from any blemish? Well, the Son of God did create His own mother! To add to this, Blessed John Duns Scotus, a son of St. Francis - a member of the greatest defenders of Our Lady s singular privilege - stated: Potuit, decuit, ergo fecit roughly translated - God could do it, He should do it, and by golly God did do it! Our Blessed Mother was saved by God in an extraordinary way for she was preserved form mortal sin. Whereas we are picked up after the fall and cleansed, Mary was prevented from falling and thus was stainless. When we celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception, we should be more fully aware of the battle that rages between good and evil. I will put enmities between thee and the woman (Genesis 3:15) it was with these Words that God declared the Immaculate Conception to our first parents. Mary was conceived without Original sin so as to cut off her relationship with the Serpent! The Roman Missal directly states the reason: it was to be the reversal of the friendship with the serpent contracted by Eve, when she listened to his voice and fell under his power. It is for this reason that we understand that for if Mary was without grace, she would be in Satan s camp. No, it would not be right that she who was to crush and conquer Satan would first be crushed by him. A prophecy pointing to Our Lady in the Song of Songs states the following about the fair bride of the Bridegroom: You are all beautiful my love, and there is no blemish in you (Song of Songs 4:7.) We can also site St. Luke s Gospel where Mary is spoken of as being Gratia Plena Full of Grace. True fullness of grace would be lacking if she came into this world in sin. Dear friends, let us not give in to the illusion that sin does not exist. It has existed since the Creation and it exists now. Sin will always be present whenever man tries to separate himself from God, ceases to acknowledge his own dependence on God, and refuses God s gifts. Pride is the primal, fundamental, original sin, which denies the faithfulness of God and leads to disobedience to the Divine Will. Our Blessed Mother broke that mold! Her Humility broke pride! Her Yes was the no to evil and Satan! This Advent Season let us remember this great aspect of the life of the Blessed Virgin. For without her yes, we would not have the crib on Christmas nor the Cross on Calvary on the Friday that changed the world! God raised Mary as a beacon of hope for us. Let us look up to that beacon and follow her as our guide! O Maria, sine labe concepta, Ora pro nobis qui ad te confugimus! O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee! Dear Parishioners and Friends, As was mentioned in the bulletin last week the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is being celebrated on two different days in our parish. In the Traditional Latin Mass it is celebrated on Sunday, December 8 th, that is today, at 11:00 A.M. ; whereas, in the Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite because of the Second Sunday of Advent, it is moved to Monday, December 9 th and the obligation to assist at Mass is suspended this year. I hope that those who do not participate in the Traditional Latin Mass will attend the noon Mass on Monday, December 9 th in honor of the Immaculate Conception. Those who have been attending the Traditional Latin Mass have noticed that on most Sundays the Scripture passages are different from those selected for the Ordinary Form. On some days even the feast celebrated differs, because the Traditional Latin Mass follows the calendar and the altar missal in use in These are legitimate variations which the Church prudently permits. Actually there are many different rites authorized for celebration of the Holy Eucharist, some quite ancient and others new. For example, Anglicans (Episcopalians) who have recently come into full union with us have been granted their own particular rite, which reflects English Catholic liturgical sensitivities. However, in spite of these legitimate variations we are obliged to see ourselves as members of the one, true, Catholic, and Apostolic, Church. The Lord wills that we work for unity among ourselves. Since Jesus did not envision a divided Christianity, we are also encouraged to do our best to lead others to the fullness of the Truth. This is the work of Ecumenism, which is the mind of Christ Himself. It does not mean compromising the Truth or underplaying our differences just to get along. In fact, the opposite is the case. Only by fully living out the Catholic Faith can we bring the light of Christ to others and keep it burning brightly among ourselves. On the Second Sunday of Advent in the Epistle of the Traditional Latin Mass (replaced this year by the Immaculate Conception) and in the second reading of the Ordinary Form this year we share the same reading from Romans. Perhaps this is a symbol of the unity within the Church that is required of us. The center of unity is Jesus Christ Himself. The work of the successor of St. Peter, the pope, is to preserve unity within the Church and invite those outside to come back in. The Lord entrusted the popes with this particular mission to feed the flock - teaching, ruling, and sanctifying. Sadly there can develop disunity in the Church from within in addition to the disunity outside its boundaries. This is not the mind of Christ. Clearly the temptation to divide up the Church must have existed in the first century of Christianity as is indicated in the above letter of St. Paul to the Romans, where he exhorts the Catholics in Rome to stand together in Christ. Always, at the center is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. If we are united to Him we cannot fail. If we stand on the Lord s certain teachings in the one, holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church we will be on safe ground. No one is permitted to divide up Holy Mother the Church. Each must do his or her part to promote unity according to Jesus Christ. Let us pray for unity in our troubled days. Yours in the Lord, The Rev. Mark G. 4 Traditional Latin Mass Society of SF meets Traditional Catholic Priest I met Father Peter Carota last summer, June 29, 2013, when I attended the Pallium Ceremony where our very own, his Excellency, Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone received his pallium. It was an interesting meeting I was with other San Francisco pilgrims for the event. Father Tom Martin (St Pius X Parish in Redwood City) wanted pictures wearing a cappello romano (roman hat). Low and behold there was a priest that had one on. We approached that priest and asked if he would allow Fr. Martin to borrow it. Afterwards, we all walked together from the Vatican to the NAC just talking about the traditional Latin Mass. I told him about our Society and then he told me about his blog. ( A new friendship began A few days ago, in Father Carota s blog, he said that he was in California (he lives in Arizona) and will be celebrating Mass (10:30am) on Thanksgiving Day at San Juan Bautista Mission. I decided to attend. I have not seen him since June. It s been a long time since I visited the Mission too. I thought, why not take a drive! (1.5 hours drive) Thanksgiving Day, I started my morning very early, driving to Star of the Sea to pick up the vestment set, altar cards, the bells and other items needed for the EF Mass in San Juan Bautista Mission. After all we are the TLM of SF and that s what we do. Support the Latin Mass. When a priest needs items to celebrate the EF and we have the items available to lend, they can borrow it. It s one aspect of our apostolate. Jay Balza also attended the EF Mass with his wife and son. We both took pictures and even videotaped the Holy Mass. Some of the pictures can be seen below and in our photo gallery. The video of the mass will be posted soon. We presented Father Carota with an early Christmas gift from the Society. Mystic Monk Coffee Christmas Blend 2013!! Which by the way we will be still selling for the next few weeks! We also passed out our Sunday bulletin to the people that attended Mass. Some heard about us but most had no clue we exist. They do now! There was a gentleman that approached us and even wanted to start a TLM group in their area. We will be ing him shortly. San Juan Bautista is not in our Archdiocese, but they are still within The Metropolitan Ecclesiastical Province of San Francisco which covers Northern California north of the Monterey Bay, as well as all of Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah. That s our vision for the Society, to reach out to the suffragan dioceses under the Metropolitan Province. Letting them know who we are and what we do. And hopefully they will be part of the TLM Society.
