Welcome to Saints 26 August 2018 Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity 9:15 Family Eucharist Feel free to ask the Priest before the service if you have any special intentions to be included in today's Intercessions. We do not practise Intinction (dipping the consecrated bread, or host, into the consecrated wine before consumption by the communicant) in this church. If you are unable to partake of the Common Cup, then it is legitimate to receive the host alone, since the body and blood are present in both species. In case of an accident during the service if there is a trained medic in church they should take control and others should remain in their seats. A churchwarden should call for an ambulance if needed and the accident book should be filled in. The service will continue as normal if at all possible. This month's hymns have been chosen by the congregation. HYMN 1 Jesus calls us here to meet him as, through word and song and prayer, we affirm God s promised presence where his people live and care. Praise the God who keeps his promise; praise the Son who calls us friends; praise the Spirit who, among us, to our hopes and fears attends 2 Jesus calls us to confess him Word of life and Lord of all, sharer of our flesh and frailness, saving all who fail or fall. Tell his holy human story; 1

tell his tales that all may hear; tell the world that Christ in glory came to earth to meet us here. 3 Jesus calls us to his table rooted firm in time and space, where the Church in earth and heaven finds a common meeting place. Share the bread and wine, his body; share the love of which we sing; share the feast of saints and sinners hosted by our Lord and King. John Bell and Graham Maule GREETING The President says In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you, and also with you. Words of welcome may be said. PRAYER OF PREPARATION Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. SUMMARY OF THE LAW Our Lord Jesus Christ said: The first commandment is this: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is the only Lord. 2

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbour as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Amen. Lord, have mercy. CONFESSION Minister St Paul says 'Be imitators of God; love as Christ loved; do not grieve the Holy Spirit; put away all anger and bitterness, all slander and malice.' So let us confess our sins to God who forgives us in Christ. Silence may be kept. ABSOLUTION The President says GLORIA O King enthroned on high, filling the earth with your glory: holy is your name, Lord God almighty. In our sinfulness we cry to you to take our guilt away, and to cleanse our lips to speak your word, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. cf Ephesians May the Father forgive us by the death of his Son and strengthen us to live in the power of the Spirit all our days. Amen. 1 Glory be to God the Father, Glory be to God the Son, Glory be to God the Spirit, Great Jehovah, Three in One! cf Isaiah 6 3

Glory, glory, glory, glory While eternal ages run! 2 Glory be to him who loved us, Washed us from each spot and stain! Glory be to him who bought us, Made us kings with him to reign! Glory, glory, glory, glory To the Lamb that once was slain! 3 Glory to the King of angels, Glory to the Church's King, Glory to the King of nations! Heaven and earth, your praises bring; Glory, glory, glory, glory To the King of Glory bring! 4 'Glory, blessing, praise eternal!' Thus the choir of angels sings; 'Honour, riches, power, dominion!' Thus its praise creation brings; Glory, glory, glory, glory Glory to the King of kings! COLLECT Horatius Bonar ( ) HymnQuest ID: The President introduces a period of silent prayer with the words Let us pray or a more specific bidding. The Collect is said. Almighty God, you search us and know us: may we rely on you in strength and rest on you in weakness, now and in all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. FIRST READING 1 Kings 22-30,41-43 Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands to heaven. He said, O LORD, God 4

of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and steadfast love for your servants who walk before you with all their heart, the covenant that you kept for your servant my father David as you declared to him; you promised with your mouth and have this day fulfilled with your hand. Therefore, O LORD, God of Israel, keep for your servant my father David that which you promised him, saying, There shall never fail you a successor before me to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your children look to their way, to walk before me as you have walked before me. Therefore, O God of Israel, let your word be confirmed, which you promised to your servant my father David. But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Even heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, much less this house that I have built! Have regard to your servant s prayer and his plea, O LORD my God, heeding the cry and the prayer that your servant prays to you today; that your eyes may be open night and day towards this house, the place of which you said, My name shall be there, that you may heed the prayer that your servant prays toward this place. Hear the plea of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray towards this place; O hear in heaven your dwelling-place; heed and forgive. Likewise when a foreigner, who is not of your people Israel, comes from a distant land because of your name for they shall hear of your great name, your mighty hand, and your outstretched arm when a foreigner comes and prays toward this house, then hear in heaven your dwelling place, and do according to all that the foreigner calls to you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your people Israel, and so that they may know that your name has been invoked on this house that I have built. At the end the reader may say This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence may be kept. PSALM 84 Refrain Blessed are they who dwell in your house. 1 How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts! * My soul has a desire and longing to enter the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. 5

2 The sparrow has found her a house and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young: * at your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. 3 Blessed are they who dwell in your house: * they will always be praising you. Refrain Blessed are they who dwell in your house. 4 Blessed are those whose strength is in you, * in whose heart are the highways to Zion, 5 Who going through the barren valley find there a spring * and the early rains will clothe it with blessing. 6 They will go from strength to strength * and appear before God in Zion. Refrain Blessed are they who dwell in your house. 7 O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer; * listen, O God of Jacob. 8 Behold our defender, O God, * and look upon the face of your anointed. 9 For one day in your courts * is better than a thousand. Refrain Blessed are they who dwell in your house. 10 I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God * than dwell in the tents of ungodliness. 11 For the Lord God is both sun and shield; he will give grace and glory; * no good thing shall the Lord withhold from those who walk with integrity. 12 O Lord God of hosts, * blessed are those who put their trust in you. Refrain Prayer Blessed are they who dwell in your house. Lord God, sustain us in this vale of tears with the vision of your grace and glory, that, strengthened by the bread of life, we may come to your eternal dwelling place; in the power of Jesus Christ our Lord. 6

SECOND READING Ephesians Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Put on the whole armour of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armour of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints. Pray also for me, so that when I speak, a message may be given to me to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it boldly, as I must speak. At the end the reader may say This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence may be kept. HYMN 1 Source and fount of all creation, pour your Spirit from above on the bearers of your image, offspring of a human love. Human hopes and human graces break beneath the weight of sin; fear and envy wrench asunder world without and self within. 2 Human love is unavailing, counter-weight to sin and strife; love of God alone can hold us on the way that leads to life. Praised be God, whose Son, our Saviour, 7

human nature has restored, living, dying, raised in glory, to the likeness of its Lord. 3 Christ our universal Saviour, nature s poet, nature s priest, through life s troubled waters bring us to the Eucharistic feast, where rejoicing saint and sinner praise the Lord of time and space, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, fount of being, source of grace. GOSPEL READING John eluia! [x4] Peter Baelz ( ) Royal School of Church Music Minister Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, one God, who was, and who is, and who is to come, the Almighty. eluia! [x4] Minister Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said to the crowd: Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live for ever. He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum. When many of his disciples heard it, they said, This teaching is difficult; who can accept it? But Jesus, being aware that his disciples were complaining about it, said to them, Does this offend you? Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But among you there are some who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the first who were the ones that did not believe, and who was the one that would betray him. And he said, For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father. Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. So Jesus asked the twelve, Do you also wish to go away? Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom 8

can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God. SERMON This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. After the Sermon silence may be kept. CREED The President says Let us declare our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 9

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. This response may be included: And at the end Silence is kept. PEACE Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us. Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. The President says Peace to you from God who is our Father. Peace from Jesus Christ who is our peace. Peace from the Holy Spirit who gives us life. The peace of the triune God be always with you. And also with you. Minister Let us offer one another a sign of peace. may exchange a sign of peace. PREPARATION OF THE TABLE During the hymn a collection takes place. HYMN 1 I come with joy, a child of God, forgiven, loved and free, the life of Jesus to recall, in love laid down for me. 2 I come with Christians far and near to find, as all are fed, 10

the new community of love in Christ's communion bread. 3 As Christ breaks bread, and bids us share, each proud division ends. The love that made us, makes us one, and strangers now are friends. 4 The Spirit of the risen Christ, unseen, but ever near, is in such friendship better known, alive among us here. 5 Together met, together bound by all that God has done, we'll go with joy, to give the world the love that makes us one. TABLE PRAYER Brian Wren (b. 1936) 1971, 1995 Stainer & Bell Ltd CM, HymnQuest ID: Pour upon the poverty of our love, and the weakness of our praise, the transforming fire of your presence. Amen. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER The Lord be with you and also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. From sunrise to sunset this day is holy, for Christ has risen from the tomb and scattered the darkness of death with light that will not fade. 11

This day the risen Lord walks with your gathered people, unfolds for us your word, and makes himself known in the breaking of the bread. And though the night will overtake this day you summon us to live in endless light, the never-ceasing sabbath of the Lord. And so, with choirs of angels and with all the heavenly host, we proclaim your glory and join their unending song of praise: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord, holy is the Lord God Almighty. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord, holy is the Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord. Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Minister Great is the mystery of faith. 12

Blessed, blessed, blessed is the Lord, Blessed is the Lord God Almighty. Blessed, blessed, blessed is the Lord, Blessed is the Lord God Almighty. Who was and is and is to come. Blessed, blessed, blessed is the Lord. And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of [N and] all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. Glory, glory, glory to the Lord, glory to the Lord God Almighty. Glory, glory, glory to the Lord, glory to the Lord God Almighty. Who was and is and is to come. Glory, glory, glory to the Lord. Silence may be kept. 13

THE LORD'S PRAYER As our Saviour taught us, so we pray. Our Father in heaven, (Or) hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. BREAKING OF THE BREAD The President breaks the consecrated bread. AGNUS DEI We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen. Jesus, Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us [x2]. Jesus, bread of life, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us [x2]. Jesus, wine of joy, you take away the sins of the world: grant us your peace [x4]. GIVING OF COMMUNION Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. 14

Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. One or more hymns may be sung, alternatively a choir anthem, while the people come forward to receive communion. The Priest and the Ministers say authorized words of distribution, to which the communicant replies Amen. HYMNS 1 Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. elu, alleluia. Seek ye... 2 You shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. elu, alleluia. You shall... 3 Ask and it shall be given unto you, seek and ye shall find; knock and the door shall be opened up to you. elu, alleluia. Ask and... Karen Lafferty (b. 1948) 1972 CCCM Music/Maranatha! Music, HymnQuest ID: Here, Lord, we take the broken bread and drink the wine, believing that by your life our souls are fed, your parting gifts receiving. 2 As you have giv n, so we would give ourselves for others healing; and as you lived, so we would live, the Father s love revealing. Silence is kept. Charles Venn Pilcher ( ) 15

Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.
