Welcome to Hallows 14 January 2018 Second Sunday of Epiphany 11:15 Family Eucharist Feel free to ask the Priest before the service if you have any special intentions to be included in today's Intercessions. We do not practise Intinction (dipping the consecrated bread, or host, into the consecrated wine before consumption by the communicant) in this church. If you are unable to partake of the Common Cup, then it is legitimate to receive the host alone, since the body and blood are present in both species. Be aware of the step-up if you use the pews on the north and south walls we don't want anyone falling. In case of an accident during the service, if there is a trained medic in church, they should take control and others should remain in their seats. A churchwarden should call for an ambulance if needed and the accident book should be filled in. The service will continue as normal if at all possible. HYMN 1 Awake, my soul, and with the sun thy daily stage of duty run; shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise to pay thy morning sacrifice. 2 Redeem thy mis-spent time that's past, live this day as if twere thy last; improve thy talent with due care; for the great day thyself prepare. 3 Let all thy converse be sincere, thy conscience as the noon-day clear; think how all-seeing God thy ways and all thy secret thoughts surveys. 1
4 Awake, awake, ye heavenly choir, may your devotion me inspire, that I like you my age may spend, like you may on my God attend. 8 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow, praise him, all creatures here below, praise him above, ye heavenly host, praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. GREETING The President says In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you, and also with you. Words of welcome may be said. PRAYER OF PREPARATION Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. SUMMARY OF THE LAW Our Lord Jesus Christ said: The first commandment is this: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is the only Lord. Thomas Ken ( ) HymnQuest ID:
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbour as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Amen. Lord, have mercy. CONFESSION Minister The grace of God has dawned upon the world through our Saviour Jesus Christ, who sacrificed himself for us to purify a people as his own. Let us confess our sins. Silence may be kept. ABSOLUTION The President says Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you, through our own fault, in thought, and word, and deed, and in what we have left undone. For your Son our Lord Jesus Christ s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. May the God of love bring us back to himself, forgive us our sins, and assure us of his eternal love in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. cf Titus
GLORIA IN EXCELSIS COLLECT Glory to God in the highest and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Glory to God in the highest and peace to his people on earth. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father; receive our prayer. Glory to God in the highest and peace to his people on earth. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Glory to God in the highest and peace to his people on earth. Amen. The President introduces a period of silent prayer with the words Let us pray or a more specific bidding. The Collect is said. Eternal Lord, our beginning and our end: bring us with the whole creation to your glory, hidden through past ages and made known in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. FIRST READING 1 Samuel The boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD under Eli. The word of the LORD was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was. Then the LORD called, Samuel! Samuel! and he said, Here I am! and ran to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did not call; lie down again. So he went and lay down. The LORD called again, Samuel! Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did 4
not call, my son; lie down again. Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. The LORD called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. Then Eli perceived that the LORD was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Now the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, Samuel! Samuel! And Samuel said, Speak, for your servant is listening. At the end the reader may say This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence may be kept. PSALM , O Lord, you have searched me out and known me; you know my sitting down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar. 2 You mark out my journeys and my resting place and are acquainted with all my ways. 3 For there is not a word on my tongue, but you, O Lord, know it altogether. 4 You encompass me behind and before and lay your hand upon me. 5 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, so high that I cannot attain it. 12 For you yourself created my inmost parts; you knit me together in my mother's womb. 13 I thank you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvellous are your works, my soul knows well. 14 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was made in secret and woven in the depths of the earth. 15 Your eyes beheld my form, as yet unfinished; already in your book were all my members written, 5
16 As day by day they were fashioned when as yet there was none of them. 17 How deep are your counsels to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! 18 If I count them, they are more in number than the sand, and at the end, I am still in your presence. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. SECOND READING Revelation I saw in the right hand of the one seated on the throne a scroll written on the inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals; and I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals? And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it. And I began to weep bitterly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. Then one of the elders said to me, Do not weep. See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals. Then I saw between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders a Lamb standing as if it had been slaughtered, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. He went and took the scroll from the right hand of the one who was seated on the throne. When he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell before the Lamb, each holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. They sing a new song: 'You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slaughtered and by your blood you ransomed for God saints from every tribe and language and people and nation; you have made them to be a kingdom and priests serving our God, and they will reign on earth. At the end the reader may say This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence may be kept. 6
HYMN 1 There is a Redeemer, Jesus, God's own Son, precious Lamb of God, Messiah, Holy One. Refrain Thank you, O my Father, for giving us your Son, and leaving your Spirit till the work on earth is done. 2 Jesus, my Redeemer, name above all names, precious Lamb of God, Messiah, O for sinners slain. 3 When I stand in glory, I will see his face, and there I'll serve my King for ever in that holy place. Melody Green (fl.1982) v3 by Keith Green ( ) 1982 Ears To Hear Music/Birdwing Music/EMI Christian Music Publishing/BMG Songs, Inc./Small Stone Media, HymnQuest ID: GOSPEL READING John eluia! [x4] Minister Christ was revealed in flesh, proclaimed among the nations, and believed in throughout the world. eluia! [x4] Minister Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, Follow me. Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth. Nathanael said to him, Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see. When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit! Nathanael asked him, Where did you come to know me? Jesus answered, I saw you 7
under the fig tree before Philip called you. Nathanael replied, Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel! Jesus answered, Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these. And he said to him, Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man. SERMON This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. After the Sermon silence may be kept. CREED The President says Let us declare our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. 8
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Let us pray to Jesus our Saviour. This response may be included: And at the end Silence is kept. Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us. Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. PEACE The President says Our Saviour Christ is the Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Minister Let us offer one another a sign of peace. may exchange a sign of peace. cf Isaiah 9.6,7 PREPARATION OF THE TABLE During the hymn a collection takes place. 9
HYMN 1 Dear Lord and Father of mankind, Forgive our foolish ways! Re-clothe us in our rightful mind, In purer lives thy service find, In deeper reverence praise. 2 In simple trust like theirs who heard, Beside the Syrian sea The gracious calling of the Lord, Let us, like them, without a word Rise up and follow thee. 3 Drop thy still dews of quietness, Till all our strivings cease; Take from our souls the strain and stress, And let our ordered lives confess The beauty of thy peace. 6 Breathe through the heats of our desire Thy coolness and thy balm; Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still small voice of calm! TABLE PRAYER John Greenleaf Whittier ( ) HymnQuest ID: Father, in Christ there has sprung up a light for the righteous; accept the offering of your Church, and grant that Christ may shine in us to the praise and glory of your name. Amen. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER The Lord be with you, and also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. 10
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. honour and praise be yours always and everywhere, mighty creator, ever-living God, through Jesus Christ your only Son our Lord: for at this time we celebrate your glory made present in our midst. In the coming of the magi the King of all the world was revealed to the nations. In the waters of baptism Jesus was revealed as the Christ, the Saviour sent to redeem us. In the water made wine the new creation was revealed at the wedding feast. Poverty was turned to riches, sorrow into joy. Therefore with all the angels of heaven we lift our voices to proclaim the glory of your name and sing our joyful hymn of praise: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: 11
Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Minister Great is the mystery of faith. Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of [N and] all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; 12
by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. Silence may be kept. THE LORD'S PRAYER As our Saviour taught us, so we pray. Our Father in heaven, (Or) hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. BREAKING OF THE BREAD The President breaks the consecrated bread. AGNUS DEI We break the bread of life, and that life is the light of the world. God here among us, light in the midst of us, bring us to light and life. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen. 13
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace. GIVING OF COMMUNION Christ is the true bread which has come down from heaven. Lord, give us this bread always. The people come forward to receive communion, authorized words of distribution are used and the communicant replies Amen. QUIRE ANTHEM Silence is kept. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION NOTICES God of glory, you nourish us with your Word who is the bread of life: fill us with your Holy Spirit that through us the light of your glory may shine in all the world. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. We thank you, Lord, that you have fed us in this sacrament, united us with Christ, and given us a foretaste of the heavenly banquet prepared for all peoples. Amen. 14
BLESSING HYMN Christ the Son of God perfect in you the image of his glory and gladden your hearts with the good news of his kingdom; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. 1 Saviour, again to thy dear name we raise With one accord our parting hymn of praise. Guard thou the lips from sin, the hearts from shame, That in this house have called upon thy name. 2 Grant us thy peace, Lord, through the coming night; Turn thou for us its darkness into light; From harm and danger keep thy children free, For dark and light are both alike to thee. 3 Grant us thy peace throughout our earthly life; peace to thy Church from error and from strife; peace to our land, the fruit of truth and love; peace in each heart, thy Spirit from above: 4 Thy peace in life, the balm of every pain; thy peace in death, the hope to rise again; then, when thy voice shall bid our conflict cease, call us, O Lord, to thine eternal peace. Minister We have seen his glory, the glory revealed to all the nations. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen. The ministers and people depart.
