2 WELCOME TO THE MASS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT The Society of Jesus, since its founding in 1540 by Saint Ignatius of Loyola, has taken its cue from Solomon, and at the beginning of each academic year has asked God to give its faculty and students the gift of wisdom. This petition is made in the context of a Mass of the Holy Spirit, celebrated at all Jesuit high school, college, and university campuses across the United States, as well as numerous other Jesuit educational institutions world-wide. We realize that we at John Carroll represent different religious backgrounds and values, but today we unite in one communal quest for wisdom. May the God of all understanding give us that great gift of wisdom and compassion. ATTENDING MASS AS A NON-CATHOLIC There are two general parts of the mass. 1) Liturgy of the Word, or hearing the Word of God with preaching on that Word; and 2) Liturgy of the Eucharist or Communion. All the parts of the Mass and some general instructions are contained in this program. Some specific questions that sometimes arise for those not in the Catholic tradition concern the following: Holy Water, Sign of the Cross, Genuflecting, etc. When Catholics enter a chapel or church, they may dip their hands in the Holy Water font and make the sign of the cross. This is a sign of baptism and of a willingness to continue to live up to the promises made at baptism. Catholics genuflect (go down on one knee) in front of the tabernacle (which at Gesu church is located in the small chapel on the north side of the church). This is a sign of reverence and awe for the presence of the consecrated hosts inside the tabernacle. Catholics believe that Jesus is truly present in the consecrated host. Catholics bow before the altar as a sign of respect for the mystery of what takes place at the altar during mass. If you are not Catholic, you are not required to participate in any of these symbolic actions, although you are welcome to do so. Sitting and Standing at Mass Generally, Catholics sit for the readings from scripture (except for the Gospel) and the preaching by the priest and stand to pray. There are places in the program which tell you whether to sit or stand. CHURCH OF THE GESU Church of the Gesu is the parish church associated with John Carroll University. It is a Jesuit parish under the jurisdiction of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland.
