2 SIXTH SUNDAY OF EPIPHANY FEBRUARY 17, 2019 Procession into the Church/Praise and Worship Ministry of the Word of God The Acclamation (Stand) For unto us a child is born. To us a son is given. The Collect for Purity & Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Law Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ says: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets. Amen. The Lessons Old Testament (Sit) Daniel 1:8-20 Reader A reading from Daniel. 8 But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king's food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself. 9 And God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs, 10 and the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who assigned your food and your drink; for why should he see that you were in worse condition than the youths who are of your own age? So you would endanger my head with the king. 11 Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had assigned over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, 12 Test your servants for ten days; let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat the king's food be observed by you, and deal with your servants according to what you see. 14 So he listened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days. 15 At the end of ten days it was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate the king's food. 16 So the steward took away their food and the wine they were to drink, and gave them vegetables. 17 As for these four youths, God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. 18 At the end of the time, when the king had commanded that they should be brought in, the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. 19 And the king spoke with them, and among all of them none was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. 5 meant for the stomach and the stomach for food and God will destroy both one and the other. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? Gospel Hymn The Sermon (Sit) (Stand) Our Bodies as the Temple of the Holy Spirit Nicene Creed (Stand) Let us confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed: 5

6 & We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. Lord, in your mercy. Together, let us pray: Lord, your Word teaches us that when we give, you will open the windows of heaven and pour down a blessing until there is no need. We ask you to help each of us to meet the financial needs of this church. Lord, in your mercy. For our brothers and sisters in Christ worldwide who are persecuted for their faith. Help us to pray that they may sense God s presence and comfort; see God open doors to evangelism so they may boldly share the gospel; mature in their faith and be granted wisdom in covert ministry work; remain joyful amid suffering; and forgive and love their persecutors. Lord, in your mercy. For our nation, for those in authority and for all in public service, for those in the US military, and for all first responders: police officers, fire fighters, and medical personnel. Lord, in your mercy: For all the blessings of this life, let us pray to the Lord. We invite your thanksgivings at this time (people may share here) Lord in your mercy. 7

8 For all those who are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity, let us pray to the Lord. We invite your petitions at this time (people may share here) Lord, in your mercy. For all those who have departed this life in the certain hope of the resurrection, in thanksgiving let us pray. Lord, in your mercy. Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers for Jesus Christ s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. The Confession and Absolution of Sin Let us humbly confess our sins to Almighty God. Silence; people sit or kneel & Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, and we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Word and Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Sanctify us also, that we may worthily receive this holy sacrament, and be made one body with him, so that he may dwell in us and we in him. And bring us with all your saints into the fullness of your heavenly kingdom, where we shall see our Lord face to face. The server will dip it in the wine and return it to you. For those not receiving communion, you are welcome to come for a blessing by crossing your arms over your heart as you come before the priest. And now Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. 14 OSL Healing Conference Due to the health status of our guest speaker, Jack Sheffield, the OSL Healing Conference scheduled for February 22 nd and 23 rd has been cancelled. All registration fees are being refunded as quickly as possible. Please pray for Jack and Anna Marie, for the precious healing touch of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and for the peace of the Holy Spirit. Recommendation from Bishop Atwood Bishop Bill Atwood is recommending the following learning opportunity to us: Setting the Captives Free- April 26-27; Friday from 7-9 pm and Saturday from 9am - 2pm. The cost is $35 which includes lunch (childcare available with sign-up). More information and registration may be found at New Adult Christian Education Session Next Sunday, February 24 th, Fr. Bob will begin a new session of Adult Christian Education at 9:30 a.m. in the parish hall. The topic will be We Believe Biblical Issues from the Nicene Creed. Website Creation Information Session After worship next Sunday, February 24 th, we will be offering an informational session in the parish hall on an upcoming opportunity. Our own Tom Ryan will be offering a clinic consisting of 6 2-hour sessions on how to create your own website. The informational session on the 24 th will allow you to hear more details about this clinic and your possible participation in it. Plans for the Revelation Gallery We are pleased to announce the return of our highly successful Revelation Gallery exhibit of last Lent A Lenten Cross Experience, 14

15 featuring crosses on loan from our members. Stay tuned for announcements on how you can participate in this wonderful exhibit. Shrove Tuesday on Sunday/Ash Wednesday On Sunday, March 3 rd, we will have our annual Shrove Tuesday on Sunday pancake brunch following the worship service. Pancakes, bacon, and fruit will be provided to the congregation as we gather to begin preparations for Lent which begins with Ash Wednesday on March 6 th. We will have two services that day, at noon and at 7:30 p.m. 15
